The first section of the book highlights the historical periods of the settling of the peninsula by the Ojibwa through the War of 1812. This is followed by the treaty-making era and relationships with missionaries. The historical section finishes with the paternalism of the early days of the Indian Act through modern times. The second section of the book gives a glimpse into the culture of the Anishnaabek. Topics such as Ojibwa characteristics, language, religion, and trade. Band designations, wampum and dodems are explained as well as gatherings, games and stories. Lifestyle is also covered illustrating the cyclical movements throughout the territory following the seasons from the main villages to hunting camps in winter, to sugar making in the early spring, to the fishing camps in late spring.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1987 and by one of Saudi Arabia’s most distinguished academics, reviews the experience of the Arab oil producers in social, economic and political development in the key period of the Seventies and Eighties. It is broadly pessimistic about the prospects for future development and sceptical about past achievements. It argues that the ‘petro-bureaucracy’ in the Arabian Peninsula has failed to establish the basic principles of effective development because it has been mesmerised by the vast oil revenues it has attempted to administer. The book suggests that in many respects the oil revenues have obstructed serious development because they have made the Arabian economies totally dependent on one expendable resource and this has made them too vulnerable to external pressures and interests. Furthermore, the oil revenues have encouraged fantasy and wishful thinking which have skewed the development process and stimulated pseudo-development. The book makes clear that until the petro-bureaucracy adopts a realistic approach to development there can be no prospect of real development in the Arabian Peninsula.

Book excerpt: This report is a follow-up to the NAO's 2005 report on the Regeneration of the Millennium Dome and associated land (HC 178, session 2004-05, ISBN 9780102931662). The 2005 report examined the process for selling the Millennium Dome and associated land and the resulting deal and concluded that the resulting deal offered an integrated solution for the regeneration of the Greenwich Peninsula and offered the Government a sensible exit strategy from the Dome. The development is still at an early stage and faces inherent risks and challenges which mean it is only possible to come to firm conclusions about early progress compared to the initial plans, rather than on the longer term outcomes. The report finds that The Dome has become a highly successful entertainment venue and a beacon for a new community on the Peninsula. The wider redevelopment of the surrounding land has been less successful. Some commercial and educational developments are underway earlier than planned initially. The delivery of new housing has, however, fallen behind schedule. It will be difficult for the housing programme to recover the lost ground to meet original targets because the rate of building required to do so is very demanding. As a consequence of these delays, the taxpayer's likely return from the redevelopment has fallen significantly. The structure of the deal means that the delays have affected the taxpayer more than the private sector. The Government should consider whether future deals can be structured to align better the interests of the public and private sectors.
