Book excerpt: One in five people in the United States had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) on any given day in 2018, totaling nearly 68 million estimated infections. STIs are often asymptomatic (especially in women) and are therefore often undiagnosed and unreported. Untreated STIs can have severe health consequences, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, miscarriage or newborn death, and increased risk of HIV infection, genital and oral cancers, neurological and rheumatological effects. In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the National Association of County and City Health Officials, commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to examine the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provide recommendations for action. In 1997, the Institute of Medicine released a report, The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Although significant scientific advances have been made since that time, many of the problems and barriers described in that report persist today; STIs remain an underfunded and comparatively neglected field of public health practice and research. The committee reviewed the current state of STIs in the United States, and the resulting report, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Advancing a Sexual Health Paradigm, provides advice on future public health programs, policy, and research.

Book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students

Download or read book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students written by Leo Wilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people aged 18 to 25 are at a significant risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Primary developmental processes that place college students particularly at risk include the experience of intimacy, sexual desires and the centrality of the peer group. During these routine developmental processes, college students experiment with unprotected sex, multiple sex partners and alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which are contributing risk factors for HIV/STI infections. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs is germane to promoting the sexual health of college students and reducing high HIV/STI infection rates among young people. This edited volume will provide innovative and cutting-edge approaches to prevention for college students and will have a major impact on advancing the interdisciplinary fields of higher education and public health. It will explore core ideas such as hooking up culture, sexual violence, LGBT and students of color, as well as HIV and STI prevention in community colleges, rural colleges and minority serving institutions.

Book Improving Sexually Transmitted Infection Knowledge in Community College Students

Download or read book Improving Sexually Transmitted Infection Knowledge in Community College Students written by Rebecca F. Halford and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This DNP project was conducted to identify gaps in knowledge focusing on sexually transmitted infections within Texas and Region one. The research study gathered data from first-year nursing students who have chosen to participate in a sexually transmitted infection-focused educational module. Participants were first-year nursing students and understood the research study was strictly voluntary with no forms of compensation. Currently, the curriculum in the nursing program at which the study took place does not focus on sexually transmitted infections and is directed to speak minimally on the subject. This is a contributing factor to why the rise in sexually transmitted infections and lack of knowledge in the region is so prevalent. This crosssectional descriptive correlational study sought to build upon and enhance the student nurse's current knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy in sexually transmitted infections in hopes of decreasing the rise and educating others on sexual health. A total of 45 students in their first semester of an Associate Degree Nursing Program in rural Texas consented to participate in this study. Each participant was educated on the study being conducted in an online format using a proxy and the researcher. An electronic survey was completed by the participants before and after viewing the interactive evidence-based educational module that focused on sexually transmitted infections. The pre-intervention scores were statistically significantly different from postintervention scores (p

Download or read book The Hidden Epidemic written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has the dubious distinction of leading the industrialized world in overall rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with 12 million new cases annually. About 3 million teenagers contract an STD each year, and many will have long-term health problems as a result. Women and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to these diseases and their health consequences. In addition, STDs increase the risk of HIV transmission. The Hidden Epidemic examines the scope of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provides a critical assessment of the nation's response to this public health crisis. The book identifies the components of an effective national STD prevention and control strategy and provides direction for an appropriate response to the epidemic. Recommendations for improving public awareness and education, reaching women and adolescents, integrating public health programs, training health care professionals, modifying messages from the mass media, and supporting future research are included. The book documents the epidemiological dimensions and the economic and social costs of STDs, describing them as "a secret epidemic" with tremendous consequences. The committee frankly discusses the confusing and often hypocritical nature of how Americans deal with issues regarding sexualityâ€"the conflicting messages conveyed in the mass media, the reluctance to promote condom use, the controversy over sex education for teenagers, and the issue of personal blame. The Hidden Epidemic identifies key elements of effective, culturally appropriate programs to promote healthy behavior by adolescents and adults. It examines the problem of fragmentation in STD services and provides examples of communities that have formed partnerships between stakeholders to develop integrated approaches. The committee's recommendations provide a practical foundation on which to build an integrated national program to help young people and adults develop habits of healthy sexuality. The Hidden Epidemic was written for both health care professionals and people without a medical background and will be indispensable to anyone concerned about preventing and controlling STDs.

Book The Effect of Implementing Monetary Incentive Into a Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention and Education Program

Download or read book The Effect of Implementing Monetary Incentive Into a Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention and Education Program written by Haley Franklin Townsend and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this experimental study was to explore the effects of monetary incentives on the engagement with sexually transmitted infection education and prevention materials in 18- to 24-year-old females enrolled in a large Southeastern university. The Centers for Disease Control (2018) has recently reported a growing number of diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States despite $16 billion being spent on STI prevention and education yearly. Over half of all newly diagnosed cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are in persons age 15-24 years. Screening and education programs exist, but the increasing number of STIs does not reflect their impact. This experimental study analyzed data from convenience sample of 156 undergraduate females randomly assigned to either a paid or unpaid group. A total of 107 participants completed the study, which consisted of a pretest, six weekly STI education messages delivered via text message, and a posttest six weeks after baseline data was gathered. Paid participants received a total of $50, paid in two increments, during the course of the study. It was conducted during the Fall semester in 2018 and examined four research questions, including, (1) "Is the use of monetary incentives in STI education and prevention a viable method to increase the effectiveness of education provided to adolescents and young adult females college students", (2) "Will there be a change over time in reported healthy sexual behaviors and intent to be tested for STIs among students who participate in the ISHK program", (3) "Will there be a difference in sexual attitudes, STI knowledge, reported STI testing rates among participants in the experimental group versus the control group after completion of the ISHK program", and (4) "What are reported motivators and deterrents to accessing STI education and prevention services". The study was conducted utilizing the Hendrick Sexual Attitude Scale, in conjunction with the National Sexual Health Survey and Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Results revealed significantly more engagement with education in the paid group than the unpaid group. There were mixed results in sexual behavior and attitude changes between and within each of the study groups. Numerous barriers to education were identified by participants and are further explored within the study. Additional research is warranted concerning the full effect of monetary incentive on changing sexual attitudes and behaviors in young adult females

Book Increasing Knowledge of Preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections in Adult College Students

Download or read book Increasing Knowledge of Preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections in Adult College Students written by Wanda Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) present a significant health challenge for communities, states, and the nation. In addition, STIs are a potential threat to an individual's immediate and long-term health and well-being. Studies suggest implementing STI prevention programs to improve knowledge and reduce risky behaviors in college students' results in increased knowledge and preventative behavior. Effective interventions are indicated to address the concern of increasing STIs in young people. One University campus located in southwest Georgia participated in an evidence-base practice (EBP) change project to increase knowledge of STI prevention in college students. Participants for inclusion in this EBP change were adult college students, male and female, 18 years of age or older attending the University. There were 153 individuals who elected to participate in the EBP change project. All participants completed Demographic Sheets, viewed the Safe in the City STI prevention video, and completed pre and post Sexually Transmitted Knowledge Questionnaires (STD-KQ). The measurable outcome for this EBP change project was to increase participants' knowledge of STI prevention. Implementation of the video educational intervention was effective in achieving the desired outcome. A simple paired t-test revealed a significant increase in knowledge from the pre STD-KQ to the post STD-KQ (p

Book Understanding Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors on Sexual Health Promotion and Sexual Transmitted Infection Prevention Among CSUSM Students

Download or read book Understanding Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors on Sexual Health Promotion and Sexual Transmitted Infection Prevention Among CSUSM Students written by Adam Mora and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health concern among young adults, specifically college-aged students. Young individuals are more likely to engage in risky behaviors. If left untreated, STIs can cause serious adverse health outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude, and behaviors among college students related to STIs at California State University San Marcos. This study used a mixed methods approach by using qualitative interviews and a cross-sectional survey to determine factors associated with increased STI knowledge and safe sex behaviors. This project looked at three specific aims by using descriptive statistics and bivariate linear regression analysis. Results show an increased positive STI knowledge score among CSUSM student participants who: got tested for STIs, were not diagnosed with an STI, were aware of testing and sexual health services on campus, and had sex under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Factors associated with high risk behaviors included students who reported: ever having sex, testing for STIs, sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs, sex with someone you met on internet/dating/hookup app, using marijuana, having a high number of sexual partners in the past six months, and binge drank in the last month. Sex and STI education should be comprehensive and offered more frequently to reduce STIs and high-risk sexual behaviors.

Book Sexually Transmitted Infections in College Students

Download or read book Sexually Transmitted Infections in College Students written by Melinda Z. Haggerty and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted infections are a serious health concern in the United States. In addition to the need for prevention and education, there is a need to support those who have already been diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections. Sexually active adolescents and young adults are at higher risk for acquiring sexually transmitted infections than sexually active older adults for a number of reasons. The research reviewed in this study shows that there is a strong social stigma attached to sexually transmitted infections. There are a number of negative outcomes associated with this stigma, including the stress and anxiety felt by those with sexually transmitted infections. College Health Centers have the potential to decrease the transmission of sexually transmitted infections among a high risk group of the population.^They also have the potential to link people who receive a positive diagnosis to counseling which may alleviate any negative psychological factors associated with such a diagnosis. This study examined the resources currently available to students at State University of New York (SUNY) Health Centers regarding sexual health. Specifically, it explored the following three questions: 1) What sexually transmitted infection resources are available to students on campus in terms of testing, and treatment? 2) How are students notified of their positive sexually transmitted infection testing results? 3) Is mental health counseling recommended to students who test positive for sexually transmitted infections? The results show a great deal of variability in terms of what STI resources are available to students from campus to campus within the SUNY system. The range of health office staff members at a given campus was 0 to 20.^Vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B and HPV were available on campus for students at half of the participating schools. STI testing was not available at 10 of the participating schools and STI treatment was not available at 14 of the participating schools. There was a significant relationship between the type of school and availability of testing and/or treatment, with community colleges less likely to have these services available on campus for students. The factor most often considered when deciding whether or not to make a recommendation for mental health counseling was the student's reaction to a positive STI diagnosis. Other factors which influenced these decisions were the type of STI the student had and the student's level of interest in mental health counseling. These results point to implications for practice and to areas for future research.
