Book Native Wisconsin Nematodes as Biological Control Agents for Cranberry Pests

Download or read book Native Wisconsin Nematodes as Biological Control Agents for Cranberry Pests written by Shane Foye and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cranberry industry of Wisconsin struggles to control several key pests, several of which are insects, such as the cranberry fruitworm, the sparganothis fruitworm, and the cranberry flea beetle. There are currently no commercially available biological control agents to assist the growers, and the flea beetle is especially difficult to control with insecticides alone. The purpose of this dissertation is therefore to provide the cranberry industry of Wisconsin with a novel bio-insecticide. These pests, which are native to Wisconsin, spend part or all of their larval stages in the soil. Therefore, native soil-dwelling natural enemies likely exist in Wisconsin that should be able to suppress them. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) represent such a bio-control agent. Two native nematodes were recovered: [Oscheius onirici], and [Heterorhabditis georgiana]. The two nematode species, either alone or in combination, were highly effective at controlling key cranberry pests. With respect to the cranberry flea beetle and the sparganothis fruitworm, both nematodes are highly virulent. Flea beetle larvae are particularly troublesome pests for cranberry growers, and the nematodes were able to provide control equal to the best insecticides. In addition, [H. georgiana] can induce high mortality rates in the cranberry fruitworm, a notoriously difficult pest for US cranberries. These nematodes appear to also have the potential to suppress insects that are not key pests of the cranberry industry. [H. georgiana] can reduce cranberry girdler populations, and [O. onirici] has shown a high level of virulence against spotted wing drosophila. The nematodes have few nontarget effects when sprayed in commercial cranberry beds. To facilitate adoption by cranberry growers, the nematodes were tested using standard spray equipment on commercial acreage. When applied with a nozzle-free boom-arm sprayer, the nematodes were shown to control the flea beetle at large spatial scales, suggesting that the nematodes represent a viable new bio-insecticide for US cranberries.
