Book The Craft of Sociology

Download or read book The Craft of Sociology written by Pierre Bourdieu and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 1991 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has emerged, over the last two decades, as one of the most substantial and innovative bodies of theory and research in contemporary social science. The Craft of Sociology, both a textbook and an original contribution to epistemology in social science, focuses on a basic problem of sociological research: the necessity of an epistemological break with the preconstructed objects social practice offers to the researcher. Pierre Bourdieu and his co-authors argue in the epistemological tradition of scholars like Bachelard, Canguilhem, Koyre, a tradition that identifies the construction of the object as being the fundamental scientific act. Their way of discussing the issue makes it accessible not only to academics and experts of epistemology, but also to advanced students of social science, using for illustration a wide range of texts from the various social sciences as well as from philosophy of science. The book includes an interview with Pierre Bourdieu and an introduction by the editor to his sociological methodology.

  • ISBN : 9780804717250
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book In Other Words written by Pierre Bourdieu and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Bourdieu is one of the most protean intellectual forces in comtemporary French thought. He holds the chair in sociology at the prestigious Collège de France, yet his influence extends far beyond the area of sociological research and theory. Bourdieu's work, presented in over twenty books, lies on the borders of philosophy, anthropology and ethnology, and cultural theory. The present volume consists of diverse individual texts, produced between 1980 and 1986, which take two forms: interviews in which Bourdieu confronts a series of probing and intelligent interviewers, and conference papers that clarify and extend specific areas of his current research. Now that Bourdieu's work has achieved wide diffusion and celebrity, this is an appropriate time for this volume, a pause for retrospection and resynthesis, for correction of misreadings and extension of previous insights, and for projection of the next stages of his work. For this English edition, Bourdieu's celebrated inaugural lecture at the Collège de France, Leçon sur la Leçon, has been added. Because of the verve and clarity of Bourdieu's arguments in this book, it is a very readable and concise introduction to his work.

Book The Dehumanization of Art and Other Essays on Art Culture and Literature

Download or read book The Dehumanization of Art and Other Essays on Art Culture and Literature written by José Ortega y Gasset and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1968-11-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No work of Spanish philosopher and essayist José Ortega y Gasset has been more frequently cited, admired, or criticized than his defense of modernism, "The Dehumanization of Art." In the essay, originally published in Spanish in 1925, Ortega grappled philosophically with the newness of nonrepresentational art and sought to make it more understandable to a public confused by it. Many embraced the essay as a manifesto extolling the virtues of vanguard artists and promoting their efforts to abandon the realism and the romanticism of the nineteenth century. The "dehumanization" of the title, which was meant descriptively rather than pejoratively, referred most literally to the absence of human forms in nonrepresentational art, but also to its insistent unpopularity, its indifference to the past, and its iconoclasm. Ortega championed what he saw as a new cultural politics with the goal of a total transformation of society. Ortega was an immensely gifted writer in the best belletristic tradition. His work has been compared to an iceberg because it hides the critical mass of its erudition beneath the surface, and because it is deceptive, appearing to be more spontaneous and informal than it really is. Princeton published the first English translation of the essay paired with another entitled "Notes on the Novel." Three essays were later added to make an expanded edition, published in 1968, under the title The Dehumanization of Art and Other Essays on Art, Culture and Literature .
