Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant travel guide to the coming world of AI.” —Jeanette Winterson What does it mean to be creative? Can creativity be trained? Is it uniquely human, or could AI be considered creative? Mathematical genius and exuberant polymath Marcus du Sautoy plunges us into the world of artificial intelligence and algorithmic learning in this essential guide to the future of creativity. He considers the role of pattern and imitation in the creative process and sets out to investigate the programs and programmers—from Deep Mind and the Flow Machine to Botnik and WHIM—who are seeking to rival or surpass human innovation in gaming, music, art, and language. A thrilling tour of the landscape of invention, The Creativity Code explores the new face of creativity and the mysteries of the human code. “As machines outsmart us in ever more domains, we can at least comfort ourselves that one area will remain sacrosanct and uncomputable: human creativity. Or can we?...In his fascinating exploration of the nature of creativity, Marcus du Sautoy questions many of those assumptions.” —Financial Times “Fascinating...If all the experiences, hopes, dreams, visions, lusts, loves, and hatreds that shape the human imagination amount to nothing more than a ‘code,’ then sooner or later a machine will crack it. Indeed, du Sautoy assembles an eclectic array of evidence to show how that’s happening even now.” —The Times

Book Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert

Download or read book Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert written by Kathryn Oliver Mills and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert, Kathryn Oliver Mills argues that despite the enduring celebrity of Baudelaire and Flaubert, their significance to modern art has been miscast and misunderstood. To date, literary criticism has paid insufficient attention to these authors' literary form and their socio-cultural context. In addition, critical literature has not always adequately integrated individual works to each author’s broader oeuvre: on the one hand critics do not often maintain rigorous distinctions among texts when discussing Baudelaire and Flaubert, and on the other hand scholars of Baudelaire and Flaubert have not consistently considered the relationship of individual texts to either writer’s corpus. Furthermore, critical focus has been on the modernity of Les Fleurs du mal, Madame Bovary, and L'Education Sentimentale. Addressing these lacunae in scholarship, Mills puts forth the argument that Baudelaire's collection of prose poems, Le Spleen de Paris, and Flaubert's short, poetic tales, Trois contes, best embody the modern aesthetic that Baudelaire develops in Le Peintre de la vie moderne and that Flaubert elaborates in his correspondence. Formal Revolution places these relatively less well-known but last published works in relationship with the artistic goals of their authors, showing that Baudelaire and Flaubert were both acutely aware of the need to launch a new form of literature in order to literally “come to terms with” the dramatic changes transforming the nineteenth-century into the Modern Age. More specifically, Formal Revolution demonstrates that for Baudelaire and Flaubert the formal project of fusing prose with poetry—as poetic prose in the case of Flaubert, as poetry in prose in the case of Baudelaire—was crucial to their mission of “painting modern life.” This work concludes that experimentation with literary form represents these two seminal writers’ major legacy to modernity; suggests that the twentieth-century might have gone too far down that road; and speculates about the future direction of literature. The modernity of Baudelaire and Flaubert, still relevant today but often taken for granted, needs to be reexamined in light of the cultural, formal, and contextual considerations that inform Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert.

Book Modernism and the Critical Spirit

Download or read book Modernism and the Critical Spirit written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complaints about the decline of critical standards in literature and culture in general have been voiced for much of the twentieth century. These have extended from F.R. Leavis's laments for a "lost center of intelligence and urbane spirit," to current opposition to the predominance of radical critical theory in contemporary literature departments. Humanist criticism, which has as its object the quality of life as well as works of art, may well lack authority in the contemporary world. Even amid the disruptions of the industrial revolution, nineteenth-century humanists such as Matthew Arnold, John Ruskin, and Thomas Carlyle could assume a positive order of value and shared habits of imaginative perception and understanding between writers and readers. Eugene Goodheart argues that, by contrast, contemporary criticism is infused with the skepticism of modernist aesthetics. It has willfully rejected the very idea of moral authority. Goodheart starts from the premise that questions about the moral authority of literature and criticism often turn upon a prior question of what happens when the sacred disappears or is subjected to the profane. He focuses on contending spiritual views, in particular the dialectic between the Protestant-inspired, largely English humanist tradition of Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold, and D.H. Lawrence and the decay of Catholicism represented by James Joyce and T.S. Eliot. Goodheart argues that literary modernism, in distancing itself from natural and social vitality, tends to render suspect all privileged positions. It thereby undermines the critical act, which assumes the priority of a particular set of values. Goodheart makes his case by analyzing the work of a variety of novelists, poets, and critics, nineteenth century and contemporary. He blends literary theory and practical criticism. "The argument is fresh, the examples invariably telling. Every reader interested in our cultural plight, where it came from, and what might be done about it, will find this book invaluable" -Wayne C. Booth "Subtle yet vigorous polemic...Goodheart's concern with the entire spectrum of religious, social, and literary issues puts him in the succession of Lionel Trilling. [Modernism and the Critical Spirit], though it deplores the decline of authority in the wake of 'modernist' virtues...is itself authoritative because of the range and depth of its controversial analyses." -Geoffrey Hartman Eugene Goodheart is Edytha Macy Gross Professor of Humanities at Brandeis University. His books include Culture and the Radical Conscience, The Skeptic Disposition: Deconstruction, Ideology and Other Matters, Desire and Its Discontents and The Reign of Ideology.

Book excerpt: A memoir of disaster, survival, and “how our treasured objects can be the priceless vessels that carry the stories of both our past and our future” (Diane Schoemperlen, author of This Is Not My Life). Four years after Therese Greenwood and her husband moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, their new community was shattered by one of the worst wildfires in Canadian history. As the flames approached, they had only minutes to pack, narrowly escaping a fire that would rage for weeks, burn more than 85,000 hectares and force 80,000 people to flee. In this book, she tells her dramatic story, and contemplates mourning, memory, and rebuilding. “By considering the things that she lost in the blaze and the things that were saved, Greenwood takes the reader with her through her own evacuation, the road to safety, the grief that she experienced on losing her home, and the steps to her recovery . . . a beautiful book, sharply observed [and] gripping.” —Miranda Hill, author of Sleeping Funny

Book excerpt: Born in Sydney, Australia, the son of an American sailor and an Australian school teacher, I was raised and educated in the United States, my childhood spent on a small farm in the Midwest and my adolescence in the suburbs of Los Angeles. I worked in the Post Office in San Francisco for five years and then taught French and English in a small country town in New South Wales, Australia, during the seventies. The character of its people, the austere beauty and the sense of space of this continent left a deep impression upon me and can be seen in my poems. I began experimenting with poetry in the early eighties, and this became a genuine passion in l984 when I was selected as one of fifteen Washington, D.C. area poets for the Jenny McKean Moore Poetry Workshop at The George Washington University taught by Julia Alvarez. My short stories have appeared inContempa, an Australian literary review, and my poetry in a number of U.S. reviews including Visions, The Birmingham Poetry Review, The George Mason Review, The Atlanta Review and others. My work appears in two anthologies: Hungry As We Are, (Washington Writers Publishing House, l995) and Free State : A Harvest of Maryland Poets (A Scop Publications anthology, l989). My first collection of poems, Painting at Night was published in 1994. I was a French and English teacher in Prince Georges County and now live in Annapolis, Maryland. I am a member of the Washington Writers Center and have participated in readings and writing workshops there and at various locations throughout the Washington-Baltimore area. My other passions are travel, dogs, and jazz, all of which enrich my poetry.

Book Cauldron of the Gods

Download or read book Cauldron of the Gods written by Jan Fries and published by Mandrake. This book was released on 2005 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine the forest. As darkness falls, the somber beeches disappear in misty twilight and shadows seem to gather under their branches. Far away, the blackbird's call tells of the coming of the night. The birds cease their singing, silence descends, soon the beasts of the night will make their appearance. Between tangled roots, hidden by nettles and brambles, the earth seems to ripple. A few humps of earth seem to emerge from the ground. They are the last traces of burial mounds, of mounds, which were tall and high 2500 years ago. Many of them have disappeared, hidden by tangled roots of beech and oak, ploughed flat by careless farmers, others again show caved-in tops where grave robbers have looted the central chamber. The locals shun these hills. There are tales that strange fires can be seen glowing on the mounds, and that on spooky nights, great armed warriors arise from their resting places. Then the doors to the deep are thrown open and unwary travelers have to beware of being invited into the halls of the dead and unborn. Here the kings of the deep feast and celebrate, time passes differently and strange treasures may be found. Who knows the nights when the gates are open? Who carries the primrose, the wish-flower, the strange blossom that opens the doors to the hollow hills?
