Book Vaqueros Cowboys and Buckaroos

Download or read book Vaqueros Cowboys and Buckaroos written by Lawrence Clayton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herding cattle from horseback has been a tradition in northern Mexico and the American West since the Spanish colonial era. The first mounted herders were the Mexican vaqueros, expert horsemen who developed the skills to work cattle in the brush country and deserts of the Southwestern borderlands. From them, Texas cowboys learned the trade, evolving their own unique culture that spread across the Southwest and Great Plains. The buckaroos of the Great Basin west of the Rockies trace their origin to the vaqueros, with influence along the way from the cowboys, though they, too, have ways and customs distinctly their own. In this book, three long-time students of the American West describe the history, working practices, and folk culture of vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos. They draw on historical records, contemporary interviews, and numerous photographs to show what makes each group of mounted herders distinctive in terms of working methods, gear, dress, customs, and speech. They also highlight the many common traits of all three groups. This comparative look at vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos brings the mythical image of the American cowboy into focus and detail and honors the regional and national variations. It will be an essential resource for anyone who would know or portray the cowboy—readers, writers, songwriters, and actors among them.

Book excerpt: Ren Hadley and Doug Gove, cousins from New Jersey, meet after years apart in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Both men, in their early thirties, struggling with failed marriages and child separation agony seek the assistance of psychotherapist Palmer Anderson. The three men along with another of Dr. Andersons clients, Jake Wilbert attempt to regain their foothold in the post hippy, cult oriented 1970s that was Saint Paul. Thirty years after establishing and solidifying their relationship, despite their extremely diverse life paths, Hadley, Gove and Anderson along with Andersons brother, Ian, gather at the home of the now expatriate, Dr. Anderson in the Mexican western seacoast village of Sayulita. The decision to include Wilbert after all those years proves questionable. He drags them through the local illicit drug trade, sexual infidelity, a dangerous confrontation with an indigenous tribe and a romp through a New Age clothing optional resort. They establish liaisons with a Japanese-Mexican beauty, a pretty Seattle travel agent and a group of Alabama society belles ending with a violent clash with the unstable Mexican political scene. This is a story of commitment and rescue between old friends. Their 1960s attitudes of acceptance and tolerance, tempered by the years, are tested in the post 911 world as they discover just how much they have come to still rely on each other and just how important that reliance has become as they have aged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a young man is confronted with the death of his grandfather, he goes about preparing himself to say goodbye. Along the way, we are let in on the very special relationship shared by the boy and the old man, lessons learned by each as they struggled with growing up and growing old. Into this relationship, we are also introduced to the boys father, who found in the old man a surrogate father and role model for how a man should act. We follow this relationship from the time the old mans daughter brings here young boyfriend home, through crises of careers and health, of relating to a growing son, to dealing with the death of the only true mentor in the mans life. As a result of the complexities faced by the three men, the novel explores the often lonely world in which men compare them selves against the masculine ideal, a world where fears and doubts are considered signs of weakness, where what a man can do with his muscles is often in conflict with what he can do with his heart. As we move through the novel, we also meet several other men whose experiences serve to underline the realities of being a man: Alex is the old mans brother. The two share a stormy relationship that stems from the early influences on their lives of their illiterate father. In time however they eventually settle into an acceptance of each others differences. Ed is a friend of the old man who saw his own father die as a result of trying to save his son. Austin suffered the disapproval of his lifestyle and the brutal loss of the only man he ever loved. Stans relationship with Mike shows the surprising tenderness shared by brothers who otherwise see themselves as tough guys. The women in the lives of these men are an underlying influence of strength and guidance, providing certain qualities that the men are often incapable of showing or even realizing. The boys grandmother, mother and sister, and the woman who becomes his wife act as foils and friends, lovers and protectors, appeasers as well as provocateurs of the male ego. Providing further proof to these roles are other wives, mothers and lovers that show the soft side of men, the sides they are often loathe to reveal to their peers. Set primarily in the beautiful and rugged cottage country of Ontario, Cowboys and Fishermen demonstrates the need men have for one another and the dependancy they share for the women who have touched their lives.
