This book of funny wildly humorous cowboy stories is raw and robust, tough and of the frontier! And it accurately reflects, through humor, the life of that time and place. Book excerpt: Howdy pard'ner! You might think us cowboys to be serious folk, but after a hard day's work there ain't nothin' better than relaxin' by the fire with a sarsaparilla and havin' a good laugh. And believe me when I tell you a cowboy could tell you a million stories that would have you splitting your sides. I took some time to scribble some of them jokes down for y'all, and I hope you enjoy them. Some of 'em are even true! Like the time this young whipper snapper was twirlin' his gun about and flappin' his chin about how tough he was and that if that famous outlaw was right beside him now he would shoot him dead between the eyes. Well, wouldn't you know it, that tough, old outlaw happened to show up, and that little greenhorn dang near peed his pants. If you like that, I got way more fer ya! If 'n there's one thing we cowboys love to talk about and have plenty to say on, it's the critters. We probably spend more time around them beasts than people. Horses especially, and they can impart wisdom to your life. Ya know what? A horse ain't trying to be polite when he comes to a fence and allows you to go over first! And when we ain't got no more stories, the classic one-liner always keeps us laughing. Try these: What's the nearest thing to silver? The Lone Ranger's bum. Why did the cowboy sleep with his saddle on? In case he caught any nightMARES! And my favorite (cause it's true): What's the last thing you hear before a cowboy dies? "Hey y'all! Watch this!"

Book The Humor of the American Cowboy

Download or read book The Humor of the American Cowboy written by Stan Hoig and published by Bison Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the cowboy, for whom the world was a circus of creation, nothing was beyond the scope of laughter. His fertile imagination could produce trail drives of dry-land terrapins, cowboy firing squads for fighting game roosters, and a breed of "honk-honk birds" that could outrun a horse. He used humor to express his fondness for the West, to exchange sarcasms with railroaders, to teach lessons to tenderfeet, and even-sometimes-to laugh at death. In The Humor of the American Cowboy, Stan Hoig presents an authentic collection of tall tales, anecdotes, yarns, jokes, and humorous incidents of the Old West that not only entertain but also focus attention on a sometimes overlooked phase of cowboy life. Stan Hoig is professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Central Oklahoma. His other books include The Sand Creek Massacre and Perilous Pursuit: The U. S. Cavalry and the Northern Cheyennes.

Book Just a Cowboy and His Baby

Download or read book Just a Cowboy and His Baby written by Carolyn Brown and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carolyn Brown sends readers on a wild ride in this enemies to lovers romance between a rugged rodeo cowboy and a fierce competitor who thinks it's time for a woman to take the crown. Gemma O'Donnell was incensed when she wasn't the first woman to win the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Championship Association) buckle for bronc riding. This year, she heads out on the PRCA ProRodeo Tour burning to be the second. First stop is Cody, Wyoming where her stiffest competition is Trace Coleman, who already has a jump on her. A tall, dark-haired cowboy with a sexy grin and a swagger, he doesn't really give a damn about the trophy belt buckle—he wants the purse to buy a ranch he has his eye on. He damn sure doesn't have time for a sassy bit of Irish baggage who can evidently ride anything with four legs and make anything with two legs want to take her to bed. Gemma wins a few; Trace wins a few. In the end they both qualify for the final cut in Las Vegas. But when it comes down to the wire, only one can win the bronc-riding competition and take home one helluva prize. But in this competition, it just might be loser takes all...

Isolated ranch life, long hours, and the boredom that occurs at day's end serve as fodder for ingenious and diabolical pranks. This book celebrates the cowboy sense of humor and memorable highjinks from author/cartoonist Dr. Robert M. Miller's own days as a wrangler, as well as those of his colleagues.

Book The Cowboy and His Elephant

Download or read book The Cowboy and His Elephant written by Malcolm Macpherson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, a female baby elephant was born into a herd that lived on the plains of southern Africa. Her mother has carried her for two years, and normally she would have nursed her for five more. But the close-knit family of wild elephants was to face a predator for which it was no match--humans. In a "cull," her family was slaughtered in a few moments. Only the newborn female's life was spared. Terrified and bewildered the young elephant was transported to America to be sold. There she met the person who was to change her life forever. Bob Norris is a cowboy with an enormous empathy for animals that overwhelms his other emotions. He was raised with a pet bear and as a boy decided to become a real cowboy. He saw his dream come true in Colorado on one of the larger horse-and-cattle ranches in America. Handsome as a movie star, he became the Marlboro Man and appeared on TV and on billboards around the world. But with the passing of years, and with his own family grown up, he felt the need for something that he could not name. When she came into his life by happenstance, the hurt, vulnerable little elephant tapped the fullness of Bob's empathy, and an incredible bond between the most unlikely of friends was forged. Bob adopted the baby orphan elephant--named Amy--and patiently set about helping her recover from the trauma of her ordeal. He had never seen a real African elephant up close, except in zoos. He was a horseman and breeder of champion quarter horses. But through close observation, gentle training, humor, and endless perseverance, Bob gradually coaxed Amy into overcoming her mistrust of humans, and indeed, her fear of the world. The little elephant became a "hand" on Bob's ranch, tending to simple chores, riding the fences, and shadowing Bob on his horse. She developed a winning personality, and a strong character, and became a beloved member of the Norris family and partner to the ranch hands. But Bob knew from the start that the ultimate goal was for Amy to regain her confidence and her independence - even, if it were possible, to go back to the savannahs of Africa. This is the true story of how Amy and Bob came together. No one who reads The Cowboy and His Elephant can fail to be moved by such a simple tale of unlikely love.
