She quickly busies herself with managing a charming public library that requires all her attention with its severe lack of funds and overabundance of eccentric patrons. The last thing she needs is a new, available neighbor whose charm lures her into trouble. Dancer-turned-teacher and choreographer Richard Muir inherited the farmhouse next door from his great-uncle, Paul Dassin. But town folklore claims the house’s original owner was poisoned by his wife, who was an outsider. It quickly became water under the bridge, until she vanished after her sensational 1925 murder trial. Determined to clear the name of the woman his great-uncle loved, Richard implores Amy to help him investigate the case. Amy is skeptical until their research raises questions about the culpability of the town’s leading families... including her own. When inexplicable murders plunge the quiet town into chaos, Amy and Richard must crack open the books to reveal a cruel conspiracy and lay a turbulent past to rest in A Murder for the Books, the first installment of Victoria Gilbert’s Blue Ridge Library mysteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A priest and his housekeeper abandon a baby girl on the doorstep of a house near the Black Church in Dublin's north inner city in February 1923. Three local women notice the couple's suspicious behaviour and apprehend them. The two are handed over to the police, charged and sent for trial. A month later, a young doctor is shot dead on the streets of Mohill, Co. Leitrim. The two incidents are connected, but how? In the days following the shooting of Dr Paddy Muldoon, the name of a local priest was linked to the killing and rumours abounded of a connection to the events in Dublin a month earlier and also that an IRA gang had been recruited to carry out the murder. However, despite an investigation at the time, the murder remained unsolved for almost 100 years. Now, newly discovered archive material from a range of sources, including the Muldoon family, has made it possible to piece together the circumstances surrounding the doctor's death, and reveals how far senior figures in the Church, State and IRA were willing to go to cover up a scandal.

Book excerpt: Blue Ridge library director Amy Webber learns it wasn't all peace and love among the "flower children" when a corpse is unearthed on the grounds of a 1960s commune. Taylorsford Public Library director Amy Webber's friend "Sunny" Fields is running for mayor. But nothing puts a damper on a campaign like an actual skeleton in a candidate's closet. Sunny's grandparents ran a commune back in the 1960s on their organic farm. But these former hippies face criminal charges when human remains are found in their fields--and a forensic examination reveals that the death was neither natural nor accidental. With Sunny's mayoral hopes fading, Amy sets her wedding plans aside, says "not yet" to the dress, and uses her research skills to clear her best friend's family. Any of the now-elderly commune members could have been the culprit. As former hippies perish one by one, Amy and her friends Richard, Aunt Lydia, and Hugh Chen pursue every lead. But if Amy can't find whoever killed these "flower children," someone may soon be placing flowers on her grave.

Book excerpt: The Silvermine Public Library had never had a dead body on the floor before. The body was that of library board member Mark Wagner, and it could have been a heart attack. But of course the possibility of murder came up. Who would have killed Mark? What about the many women he hit on, putting his big hands where they didn't belong? What about the many people who had suffered from his rapacious real estate deals? If you counted up who was annoyed at Mark, it would be hundreds or even thousands of people in Silvermine, Colorado (pop. 10,000). If you counted up who might really have done it, well, there were several suspects. Some people were talking about the library director Lauren Long, but she had her hands full, trying to keep the momentum for a new library going forward while everyone's attention was on the death. There was her love life to keep going, too, and then someone tried to break into her house, more than once. Was she marked for murder? In this new story, the first of the Curious Librarian Cozy Mystery series, author and librarian Zana Hart weaves a tale that leaves red herrings all over the library.

Book Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases 1934 1970

Download or read book Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases 1934 1970 written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007 called for review and reinvestigation of "violations of criminal civil rights statutes that occurred not later than December 31, 1969, and resulted in a death." The U.S. Attorney General's review observed that date, while examining cases from 1936 (a date not specified in the Till Act) onward. In selecting violations for review, certain "headline" cases were included while others meeting the same criteria were not considered. This first full-length survey of American civil rights "cold cases" examines unsolved racially motivated murders over nearly four decades, beginning in 1934. The author covers all cases reviewed by the federal government to date, as well as a larger number of cases that were ignored without official explanation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Willard Stevens has been murdered in the Hillville Iowa Public Library! It is a new scandal that electrifies everybody in town! A thrilling act of this kind seems to be what everybody has been needing to get their blood running faster. No one cares about the crooked Justice; his death seems to be a righteous judgement for his many sins, but to have him executed with a knife in the sacred halls of the kindly old Library is a blow that nobody expects. The Starfire men, always ready to give a hand to the bumbling sheriff of Bogger County, are on the scene as soon as they get the call, and the tussle between Sheriff Baylor and the Detective Agency begins anew. Lillian Stevens, the Judge's often pitied wife, is over in Atlantic visiting her mother when he is killed, and Atlantic is only an hour's drive away. That brings up a lot of questions, of course, but everybody knows that a gentle person like Lilly couldn't possibly be guilty of such a heinous act. Perhaps subtle poison, but not a knife in the back! Bessie Corcoran, who stumbles across the body, quite literally, is known in town as a friendly woman who really likes men, including Willard Stevens, with whom she now stands accused of a prolonged affair. Guy LaFevre, the head of murder investigations for the Starfire Agency, believes that Bess is a woman who has something to hide. She is, he thinks, counterfeit in some way. Reena Hoffenstot, the steely-cold Librarian, is not a woman you want to cross, nor is the Queen of Local Gossip, Betsy Thandry, who spreads her wild tales as far and wide as she possibly can, although most of the women who have listened to her in the past are no longer very interested in what she has to say. Hillville is a wonderful mix of every kind of intrigue and insanity, as well as the wholesome and gentle folk who inhabit most of the quietly white houses along the well-kept streets. It is something of an enigma that so much of the ills of humanity boils to the surface every once in a while, but, of course, that is small-town life in the 1950's, and that is exactly why Hillville is the wonderful, even at times exotic, place that it is.
