Book excerpt: Excerpt from The County and City of Cork Remembrancer, or Annals of the County and City of Cork The design of the following work was suggested by former publications of a similar character; in 1783 Mr. J.fitzgerald published the first Cork Remembrancer in 1792, Mr. A. Edwards published the second the present attempt is the third. 'v e believe our city has furnished the only examples of such compilations. Indeed our predecessors in this path, accompanied their local anecdotes with a general chronicle of the world, which, however, we have rejected from our plan, as being rather inappropriate. Our book is therefore, for the most part, a mere collection of tri ing incidents, which occurred in the city and county of Cork 3 but frivolous as the facts detailed, may appear to many, they often present more vivid images of other times, than graver details 5 similar trifles of our own time find their places in the newspapers, and are allowed to be, at least, amusing and although those of other times lose part of their attractions by their remoteness, they yet derive from the same source, an interest of another kind, and may well claim a compiler's labour. This was most evident in the rise of its cities, notably Dublin and Cork. David Dickson explores ten urban centers and their patterns of physical, social, and cultural evolution, relating this to the legacies of a violent past, and he reflects on their subsequent partial eclipse. Book The Remembrances of Elizabeth Freke 1671 1714

Download or read book The Remembrances of Elizabeth Freke 1671 1714 written by Elizabeth Freke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing and then rewriting autobiographical remembrances recalling three decades of marriage and ensuing years of widowhood, Elizabeth Freke strikingly redefines the relationships among self, family, and patriarchy characteristic of early modern women's autobiography. Suffering and sacrifice dominate an extensive ledger of disappointment and bitterness that reveals over time the complex emotions of a Norfolk gentry woman seeking significance and even vindication in her hardships and frustrations. The infirm woman who eventually found herself utterly alone remained to the end a contentious, melodramatic, yet formidable figure - a strong-willed, even sympathetic person intent upon asserting herself against what she perceived as familial neglect and legal abuse. By making available both versions of the remembrances in their entirety, this new, multiple-text edition clarifies the refashioning inherent in each stage of writing and rewriting, recovering with unusual immediacy Freke's late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century domestic world.
