Book The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics Classic Reprint written by W. Lawrence Balls and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics This book has been written with the purpose of abstracting the results of a series of researches made upon cotton plants in Egypt, which investigations, though diverse, were connected by the desire to know all that could be learned about the plant itself. Portions of these inquiries have appeared in various journals, but most of the material here utilised has not yet been published. Where it may appear to the reader that a conclusion necessitates much fuller data than is placed before him, I can only ask his clemency until such time as a fuller monograph shall be written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics A reprint of this book being needed, although urgency precludes the making of a new edition, it should be of use to the reader to know that the researches herein described were subsequently developed appreciably further, being thus brought into direct contact with the problems of Agriculture on the one hand, and of the Spinning Industry on the other. For a brief summary I would refer to a lecture in the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts, Volume LXVI, No. 3415, and also to a book entitled 'The Development and Properties of Raw Cotton, Messrs. A. & C. Black, London, 1915. A detailed exposition of my method for studying Crop Physiology by Curve-s of Development for the Average Plant will be found in the Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc., under the title "Analyses of Agricultural Yield, Parts I-III," 1915-1916. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton production today is not to be undertaken frivolously if one expects to profit by its production. If cotton production is to be sustainable and produced profitably, it is essential to be knowledgeable about the growth and development of the cotton plant and in the adaptation of cultivars to the region as well as the technology available. In addition, those individuals involved in growing cotton should be familiar with the use of management aids to know the most profitable time to irrigate, apply plant growth regulators, herbicides, foliar fertilizers, insecticides, defoliants, etc. The chapters in this book were assembled to provide those dealing with the production of cotton with the basic knowledge of the physiology of the plant required to manage the cotton crop in a profitable manner.

Book Agrobacterium From Biology to Biotechnology

Download or read book Agrobacterium From Biology to Biotechnology written by Tzvi Tzfira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-25 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agrobacterium is a plant pathogen which causes the “crown-gall” disease, a neoplastic growth that results from the transfer of a well-defined DNA segment (“transferred DNA”, or “T-DNA”) from the bacterial Ti (tumor-inducing) plasmid to the host cell, its integration into the host genome, and the expression of oncogenes contained on the T-DNA. The molecular machinery, needed for T-DNA generation and transport into the host cell and encoded by a series of chromosomal (chv) and Ti-plasmid virulence (vir) genes, has been the subject of numerous studies over the past several decades. Today, Agrobacterium is the tool of choice for plant genetic engineering with an ever expanding host range that includes many commercially important crops, flowers, and tree species. Furthermore, its recent application for the genetic transformation of non-plant species, from yeast to cultivated mushrooms and even to human cells, promises this bacterium a unique place in the future of biotechnological applications. The book is a comprehensive volume describing Agrobacterium's biology, interactions with host species, and uses for genetic engineering.
