Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of the Cotton Fibre, Vol. 1: In Its Relation to Technical Applications When, in 1886, I was selected by the Royal Commission of the Indian and Colonial Exhibition to report on the wools there exhibited, I had the opportunity of examining probably the finest collection of wools which had up to that time been gathered together, and made extensive notes for future reference. The books above named have long been out of print, and although many works have since appeared dealing with the same subject, my work and results have been largely embodied in them all, either acknowledged or unacknowledged, and the sketches of the fibres which I made have been universally accepted as authoritative. Book Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres

Download or read book Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres written by Ernest Goulding and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres: Their Production Utilisation Among the industrial problems arising from the war, one of the most important is that of the future of our textile industries, especially in relation to the sources from which they derive their raw materials and the possibility of drawing these to a larger extent than was the case before the war from countries within the Empire. The subject is one that has engaged the close attention of the Imperial Institute for many years, during which it has investigated the possibilities of fibre production in all those British countries which seem to present chances of success. The Institute has given assistance, through experimental investigations conducted in its laboratories and through the supply of technical information, to Governments of the countries concerned, to producers overseas and to merchants and manufacturers at home. A very large amount of information has been collected on questions connected with the experimental production and value of fibres in various countries, much of which has been published in the "Bulletin of the Imperial Institute" and in special reports. In connection with cotton cultivation especially the work of the Imperial Institute has been continuous and has been conducted in intimate association with experimental cultivation overseas, and with the operations of the British Cotton Growing Association. In these subjects of cotton cultivation alone the Institute has issued a large number of special reports. The increased attention which must shortly be given to extending these sources of supply of cotton and other industrial fibres rendered it desirable that a general summary should be published of the position and prospects of the world's production and utilisation of fibres, and it has been therefore decided to issue the present volume in the Imperial Institute series of Handbooks to the Commercial Resources of the Tropics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton: The Universal Fiber, a Survey of the Cotton Industry From the Raw Material to the Finished Product, Including Descriptions of Manufacturing and Marketing Methods and a Dictionary of Cotton Goods The Dry Goods Economist presents this little book to the public and to the trade believing that it fills a long felt want. Letters have come to us for years asking for such a work, but not until recently have we had the information necessary to give a comprehensive yet condensed story of cotton - its history, its production and the final form in which it reaches the consumer. Those whose interest is confined to the use of cotton will gain greater pleasure from their cotton clothing when possessed of the knowledge contained in the pages that follow. The student of textiles will find the facts as presented a veritable mine of information. Few books of any size contain so much authoritative data as has been assembled herein. The teacher of textiles will use this little book to make assignments for research into the various branches of the cotton industry because of the vast number of suggestions found in these pages. The buyer of cotton in any of its stages will find his work more interesting and more profitable after a reading of "Cotton - The Universal Fiber." Briefly, this book has been written by Mr. Darby in a simple, plain, easily understood way, void of those technicalities which make so many books of this nature such dry reading. We cannot recommend the book too highly to all those who would know more about the fiber that enters so largely into our lives from birth to death. And the value of the book isn't limited to the pages that tell the story of cotton. The dictionary of cotton terms in the back is the best we have ever seen. As a matter of fact, it is more than a dictionary. It is in the nature of an encyclopedia, giving not only the definitions of the terms listed but some description of how the merchandise represented by the terms is made or manufactured, and often even telling the uses of the goods described. Therefore, let us again emphasize that it is with pleasure the Dry Goods Economist offers this work to you. May your pleasure and interest in reading the book be as great as was ours and Mr. Darby's during the many months spent in searching for, assembling and condensing the facts necessary to make up a really worthwhile book on "Cotton - The Universal Fiber." This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Cotton Fibre, and on the Manner in Which It Unites With Colouring Matter: Communicated to the Chemical Society The attraction which is attributed to porosity or capillarity we know to be an attraction of surface; but it is one in which, in consequence of its structure, the absorbing body has its power of attraction for that which it imbibes immensely increased. The term capillarity gives but a faint idea of the disproportion between the extent of surface of the cell which constitutes a pore in the woody fibre and the almost mathematical line or point of matter which that cell is capable of containing. From the experiments of Saussure, we learn that boxwood charcoal absorbs a quantity of carbonic acid 56 times greater than the capacity of its pores, which implies the existence of a large proportion of it in the liquid state. Other porous bodies have similar properties raw silk, linen thread, the dried woods of hazel and mulberry, although they were found to condense but a small quantity of carbonic acid, took up 70 or 100 times their bulk of ammoniacal gas; and Saxon hydrophane, which is nearly pure silica, absorbed 64 times its bulk of that gas. The gas does not enter into combination with the solid which absorbs it: the air-pump alone destroys their union. Book Blending of Machine Stripped Cotton

Download or read book Blending of Machine Stripped Cotton written by Roy Verble Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blending of Machine-Stripped Cotton: Preliminary Feasibility Studies The blending of seed cotton (unginned cotton), however, is not a common practice in this country, although it is widely used in other parts of the world. As with lint cotton, there are advantages to blend ing seed cotton. The primary advantage is an improvement in uni formity of fiber properties within a bale and among bales of similar cotton. It is well documented that considerable variation in fiber properties exists among layers in a domestic bale of cotton.4 This variation stems from uneven growth patterns in the field. Although some blending occurs in conventional harvesting and ginning proc esses, the extent of blending is not sufficient to level out the varia tions in fiber properties from layer to layer in a bale. Book Cotton Manmade Fiber Blends in Western Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cotton Manmade Fiber Blends in Western Europe Classic Reprint written by Bernice M. Hornbeck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton-Manmade Fiber Blends in Western Europe There is little doubt that cotton is facing a challenge from manmade fibers1 in Western Europe and that much of this competition is in the form of blends in products for which 100-percent cotton was formerly used. Some indication of this challenge is given by the following trends. The market for cotton in Western Europe in a recent year has divided into apparel (49 percent), household fabrics (32 percent), and industrial fabrics (19 percent). For industrial fabrics, cotton's share has remained at approximately the same level between 1956 and 1967. For household goods, cotton's share fell, particularly in decorative fabrics. For apparel, there were severe losses, especially in shirts and outerwear. Unfortunately, there are few statistical data in Western Europe or elsewhere showing the quantities of blended yarns and fabrics produced. However, the information regarding the following countries indicates the growing importance of blends and is probably indicative of trends elsewhere and in Western Europe as a whole. In 1969 blended yarn constituted about 11 percent of the yarns Spun in the cotton system in the United Kingdom and in 1968 about 16 percent of the yarns turned out by cotton spinners in West Germany. Based on data for the year 1969, about 16 percent of the yarn and about 29 percent of the fabric produced in Italy was blended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton: From the Raw Material to the Finished Product The magnitude of the Cotton Spinning and Manufac turing industry of Great Britain, in which it is estimated that something like of capital is invested, and which employs a vast army of skilled workpeople, is colossal. Few industries have brought forth such a bountiful wealth of inventive genius - expediting and perfecting production by intricate mechanical processes, and penetrating the secrets of chemistry, bringing forth from her hidden treasuries the art hand-maidens of the textile craft. Cotton goods, in myriad styles and quali ties, are found in our Home Markets, and are carried over the seas and oceans to clothe the races of the world. Obviously, a knowledge of the true sequence of the pro cesses in this great industry is of importance. In this work I have sought to give an intelligent, technical explanation - not too technical, I hope - of the Spinning and Manufacturing Systems in their very latest forms. This description is prefaced by a short historical sketch of the more primitive method of cloth production. Particulars are given as to the growth of cotton, and the adaptability of the various staples for different counts of yarn, and this is followed by a chapter on the foundation and development up to the present time of the British Cotton Growing Association, a national movement of vast importance for our textile trade. The description of cloth production leads on to a short account of the system of merchandise. The great trade organisations of the workpeople and the Conferences between masters and men which have resulted in Treaties of Peace and the establishment of methods of.
