Book The Food Sector

Download or read book The Food Sector written by Stephen Fallows and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-31 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media coverage has highlighted controversies involving the European Community regulations in matters related to food law: the fat content in British ice-cream, the purity of beer in Germany, or the export of French liquor. The establishment of a single European market is set to overhaul trading standards and regulations yet further. The food and drink sector faces a major challenge in adapting to this new market, standing up to competition and exploiting new opportunities. Those involved in the business, as well as those public officials concerned with maintaining standards, are presented with a complex array of new regulations to comply with. This volume explains the role of European Community policy in this area, and what it means for those involved in business and the public sector. Key EC policy documents are summarised, and a full listing is given of all the relevant official material. This volume thus guides the reader through the new `Euro-maze'.

Designed to be a reference that bridges the gaps between science, regulation and control of food safety. While this might have been a rather ambitious aim, in putting together this book, the editors have certainly succeeded in gathering a group of experts from industry, government agencies, academia, consumer groups and the media whose knowledge and expertise reflect the complex and multisectoral/multidisciplinary nature of food safety." ---Food Science and Technology

Book The Challenge of Protein Crops as a Sustainable Source of Food and Feed for the Future

Download or read book The Challenge of Protein Crops as a Sustainable Source of Food and Feed for the Future written by Antonio M. De Ron and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain legumes, together with quinoa and amaranth (pseudocereals) and other crops are attractive candidates to satisfy the growing demand for plant protein production worldwide for food and feed. Despite their high value, many protein crops have not been adequately assessed and numerous species are underutilized. Special attention has to be paid to genetic diversity and landraces, and to the key limiting factors affecting yield, including water deficiency and other abiotic and biotic stresses, in order to obtain stable, reliable and sustainable crop production through the introduction and local adaptation of genetically improved varieties. Legumes, the main protein crops worldwide, contribute to the sustainable improvement of the environment due to their ability to fix nitrogen and their beneficial effects on the soil. They play a key role in the crop diversification and sustainable intensification of agriculture, particularly in light of new and urgent challenges, such as climate change and food security. In addition, the role of legumes in nutrition has been recognized as a relevant source of plant protein, together with other benefits for health. Chapters dealing with common bean, lupine, soybean, lentil, cowpea and Medicago are included in this book. Most contributions deal with legumes, but the significant number of papers on different aspects of quinoa gives an idea of the increasing importance of this protein crop. Pseudocereals, such as quinoa and amaranth, are good sources of proteins. Quinoa and amaranth seeds contain lysine, an essential amino acid that is limited in other grains. Nutritional evaluations of quinoa indicate that it constitutes a source of complete protein with a good balance among all of the amino acids needed for human diet, and also important minerals, vitamins, high quality oils and flavonoids. Other protein crops also included in this book are hemp, cotton and cereals (maize, wheat and rice). Although cereals protein content is not high, their seeds are largely used for human consumption. In this book are included articles dealing with all different aspects of protein crops, including nutritional value, breeding, genetic diversity, biotic and abiotic stress, cropping systems or omics, which may be considered crucial to help provide the plant proteins of the future. Overall, the participation of 169 authors in 29 chapters in this book indicates an active scientific community in the field, which appears to be an encouraging reflect of the global awareness of the need for sustainability and the promising future of proteins crops as a source of food and feed.

Book States Versus Markets

Download or read book States Versus Markets written by Herman Mark Schwartz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fourth edition, this highly regarded and critically acclaimed textbook offers an authoritative introduction to international political economy. It is unique in offering an accessible, broad introduction to the development of the global economy from its inception to today's complex relationship between states and markets in the midst of economic crises. Herman Mark Schwartz deftly shows that globalization is not a novel phenomenon but a recurrent process whereby markets have, since the 16th century, periodically redistributed economic activity. It links the production of goods and services in one region to the markets for those goods, and shows how this can lead to conflicts among states that try to create, enhance or subdue the markets. Taking into account the continued rise of China, and the recent shift towards populism in the West, this book has been extensively rewritten and updated throughout. This is a thought-provoking text which will encourage upper level undergraduate and postgraduate students to think analytically about the inevitability of a global market influencing a state's policies and geo-economic position and to locate their own thinking within the IPE tradition. New to this Edition: - Thoroughly updated to cover all major developments in global political economy since the financial crisis - Timelines in most chapters show key events in the evolution of the global economy - Offers a particularly clear account, now with chapter summaries, updated examples and a glossary of key terms
