Book Cost of Growing Timber in the Pacific Northwest as Related to the Interest Rates Available to Various Forest Owners Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cost of Growing Timber in the Pacific Northwest as Related to the Interest Rates Available to Various Forest Owners Classic Reprint written by Burt P. Kirkland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost of Growing Timber in the Pacific Northwest, as Related to the Interest Rates Available, to Various Forest Owners Since the timber is not an annual product, the interest cannot be secured annually, but must accumulate until the timber is cut. Hence compound interest is used. What this will amount to at rates applicable to forestry will be discussed later, and shown specifically in the tables forming part of this discussion. Cost of Stocking Land With Trees While space is not here available to take up in detail the cost of stocking the land, there is good evidence that $5.00 per acre is a fair average figure. Although planting on a bare area will cost nearer $10.00, few areas need be chosen which do not bear some young growth or contain some seed trees which will assist artificial regeneration. Areas that have not been cut over can seldom be stocked any cheaper by natural regeneration than by planting, since the value of the seed trees that must be left will usually bring the cost up to the average figure mentioned above unless there are an unusually large number of worthless trees of the desired species which may be used as seed trees. A skillful combination of planting with natural regeneration from stands not yet cut, and artificial regeneration by planting or seeding should bring the operation within this cost Unlike the land cost, the expense of stocking the land with trees has to be repeated every time the timber is cut. This amount must, therefore, be charged against the product of each planting. Interest on Cost of Stocking Land The interest on the cost of stocking the land might have been included with the foregoing item, but it is here treated separately in order that all interest charges under various kinds of ownership may be segregated. As in the case of interest on the land value, compound interest must be used. The amount of this item at various rates will be shown specifically in tables forming part of this discussion. The Annual Cost of Administration and Protection Kellogg and Ziegler maintain that the annual cost of administration and protection can be handled for five cents per acre. An analysis of the actual conditions will show that five cents is not sufficient for safety. It must be remembered that this includes office expense, supervision, fire patrol, patrol against trespass, and all other overhead expenses. Although forest fire insurance is not at present one of the expense charges included in this item, the practicability of insuring forests by an enlargement of the scope of the forest fire protective organisations is such that it is bound to come in the near future. Hence this figure should also be high enough to include forest fire insurance. In the case of the state or the federal government, the losses from fire must be charged to this item. Whatever amount accumulates between planting and cutting a single crop must be charged to that crop. The writer does not therefore, believe that the low figure generally assigned to the annual cost of administration and protection is sufficient, but will assign 20 cents per acre per annum as a reasonable, though entirely sufficient amount. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of Growing Timber It is the purpose of this paper to present a method of analysis of theelements of cost in growing timber. The assumptions made are thought to be fair and to approximate the usual conditions under which the various species must be grown. With a right method of computation established those who have need to do so can supply the necessary factors and determine the cost of production for particular cases. With these considerations in mind, the following discussion is given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Timber Buildings and Sustainability

Download or read book Timber Buildings and Sustainability written by Giovanna Concu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction sector alone accounts for 40 percent of resource consumption and environmental pollution. In line with the current considerations on environmental sustainability, particular attention is paid to eco-sustainable building materials such as timber. Timber is able to perform both load-bearing and comfort constructive functions. It is also a natural, renewable and recyclable material. However, its use as an engineering material calls for constant development and research. This book provides insight into the spread of the use of timber in the construction industry, presenting some thoughts on important aspects related to production, design and responsible use.

This text is one of many on the topic of timber supply, a perpetually central issue in forest economics and policy. But it is also something else: It is an attempt to examine the economic efficiency of investments in timber production. Special attention is directed to the increasingly important issue of investments in forestland, particularly public forestland, where allocation of land between timber production and other forest uses is an issue of national policy importance.

Book Timber Value Growth Rates in New England

Download or read book Timber Value Growth Rates in New England written by David A. Gansner and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Rates of growth in the value of standing timber can vary greatly from stand to stand and from tree to tree. In Maine, the compound annual rate of change in stand value between the two most recent forest inventories ranged from -12 to +43 percent. Faced with this kind of variation, forest managers can use help in determining financial rates of return for their woodland. From analyses of forest inventory data we have developed guides for estimating value growth potential for trees in New England. S3.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost Control in Timber Growing on the National Forests of the Northern Region The large-scale forestry enterprise of the Forest Service represents a most complex type of business from the standpoint of achieving cost control. Timber growing involves a number of interdependent actions. The degree of coordination achieved strongly influences both costs and results. A District Ranger may be simultaneously involved in timber harvest ing, slash disposal, site preparation, regener ation, stand improvement, and protection on a large number of areas. These activities must be pursued in proper sequence and at the proper time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
