Book The Cost of Export Subsidies

Download or read book The Cost of Export Subsidies written by Mr.Alexander W. Hoffmaister and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a model to estimate the effects of export subsidies on the supply of exports. Using data for Costa Rica over the 1980’s, it is shown that while the export subsidy scheme in operation led to an increase in exports, the direct fiscal costs of the scheme were quite large. Furthermore, the subsidy scheme led to a significant increase of imports. These results suggest that elimination of export subsidies would not have a particularly harmful effect on the trade balance, and would increase the fiscal position and generate economic efficiency besides.

Book Credibility and the Cost of Export Subsidies

Download or read book Credibility and the Cost of Export Subsidies written by Mr.Alexander W. Hoffmaister and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-12-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recurring balance of payments crises in countries that pursued import substitution have led some of them to establish a variety of export incentives, in particular subsidies, as a way to revive and re-orient their economies. However, exporters are likely to be uncertain of the government’s commitment to export promotion because of the years of neglect. This paper analyzes the issue of the credibility of export subsidies and suggests that a government is able to convince exporters of its commitment only at a cost, which reduces the attractiveness of promoting exports by means of subsidies.

Book Agricultural Export Subsidies and Developing Countries Interests

Download or read book Agricultural Export Subsidies and Developing Countries Interests written by Chris Milner and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 2004 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new impetus has been given to faltering WTO trade discussions by the recent EU mandate supporting the liberalisation of agricultural trade policies and removal of export subsidies on agricultural products, within an environment in which all countries start reforming their trade policies.Until now, discussions have centred on agriculture in general, rather than at specific commodity level. This paper rises to the challenge laid down by the EU by identifying the specific commodities for which developing countries would gain benefit in any subsequent reforms.Agricultural Export Subsidies and Developing Countries? Interests outlines the nature of export subsidies. It discusses the effect of reform on developing countries, indicating the scale of any changes. The policy implications of removing agricultural support in the EU are given and the consequences for net food exporting and importing countries examined. Finally, the paper considers the impact of EU agricultural policy reform on other policies, such as the Protocols of the Lom? Convention.(previously announced as EU Farm Subsidies and Developing Countries)

Book Export Subsidies and Countervailing Duties Under Asymmetric Information

Download or read book Export Subsidies and Countervailing Duties Under Asymmetric Information written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the role of information in the formulation of trade policy for home and foreign country, in a setting in which the home government chooses its subsidy level first after which the foreign firm retaliates by imposing tariffs on its imports. We consider an environment in which home firm costs are private information but it can signal these costs to both policymakers and the foreign firm by choosing the appropriate output level. We show that a low-cost home firm has an incentive to misrepresent itself as high-cost. This is understood by the foreign firm and both policymakers and results in the home government setting a higher subsidy in the signalling case compared to the case when the home firm's output was not a signal of its costs; the foreign government sets the same tariff in both cases. -- Export subsidy ; Tariffs ; Incomplete information ; Signalling

Book Market Reactions to Export Subsidies

Download or read book Market Reactions to Export Subsidies written by Mihir A. Desai and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper analyzes the economic impact of export subsidies by investigating stock price reactions to a critical event in 1997. On November 18, 1997, the European Union announced its intention to file a complaint before the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that the United States provided American exporters illegal subsidies by permitting them to use Foreign Sales Corporations to exempt a fraction of export profits from taxation. Share prices of American exporters fell sharply on this news, and its implication that the WTO might force the United States to eliminate the subsidy. The share price declines were largest for exporters whose tax situations made the threatened export subsidy particularly valuable. Share prices of exporters with high profit margins also declined markedly on November 18, 1997, suggesting that the export subsidies were most valuable to firms earning market rents. This last evidence is consistent with strategic trade models in which export subsidies improve the competitive positions of firms in imperfectly competitive markets"--NBER website

Book Export Subsidies and International Market Share Rivalry

Download or read book Export Subsidies and International Market Share Rivalry written by James A. Brander and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries often perceive themselves as being in competition with each other for profitable international markets. In such a world export subsidies can appear as attractive policy tools, from a national point of view, because they improve the relative position of a domestic firm in noncooperative rivalries with foreign firms, enabling it to expand its market share and earn greater profits. In effect, subsidies change the initial conditions of the game that firms play. The terms of trade move against the subsidizing country, but its welfare can increase because, under imperfect competition, price exceeds the marginal cost of exports. International noncooperative equilibriumis characterized by such subsidies on the part of exporting nations, even though they are jointly suboptimal.
