Book excerpt: There is a fell quality to the mating urge that gives it the force of a natural and unimpeachable authority, which appears for a time to sweep away every obstacle and override the obstructing power of every consideration, whether of advantage or injury. It carries a virtual cosmic sanction with it. -from "Love and Hate" How does gender and the sex drive manifest itself across human cultures? How is the dual nature of humanity-male and female, spiritual and physical, animal and divine-expressed in the tangible world? Alvin Boyd Kuhn, a prominent proponent of the early 20th-century doctrine of theosophy, which sought to find the universal truths that underlie all human religions, here explores the hidden connections across cultures that unify rites and customs found around the globe: circumcision, the secondary status of women, myths about communion with deities, and more. In fluid prose that approaches a stream-of-consciousness reverie, this treatise seeks to uncover a fundamental basis for human ideas about sex, gender, and love. American philosopher and scholar of comparative religion ALVIN BOYD KUHN (1880-1963) is also the author of Theosophy (1930) and The Lost Light (1940).

Book Vodou in the Haitian Experience

Download or read book Vodou in the Haitian Experience written by Celucien L. Joseph and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One glaring lacuna in studies of Haitian Vodou is the scarcity of works exploring the connection between the religion and its main roots, traditional Yoruba religion. Discussions of Vodou very often seem to present the religion in vacuo, as a sui generis phenomenon that arose in Saint-Domingue and evolved in Haiti, with no antecedents. What is sorely needed then is more comparative studies of Haitian Vodou that would examine its connections to traditional Yoruba religion and thus illuminate certain aspects of its mythology, belief system, practices, and rituals. This book seeks to bridge these gaps. Vodou in the Haitian Experience studies comparatively the connections and relationships between Vodou and African traditional religions such as Yoruba religion and Egyptian religion. Such studies might enhance our understanding of the religion, and the connections between Africa and its Diaspora through shared religious patterns and practices. The general reader should be mindful of the transnational and transcultural perspectives of Vodou, as well as the cultural, socio-economic, and political context which gave birth to different visions and ideas of Vodou. The chapters in this collection tell a story about the dynamics of the Vodou faith and the rich ways Vodou has molded the Haitian narrative and psyche. The contributors of this book examine this constructed narrative from a multicultural voice that engages critically the discipline of ethnomusicology, drama, performance, art, anthropology, ethnography, economics, literature, intellectual history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, religion, and theology. Vodou is also studied from multiple theoretical approaches including queer, feminist theory, critical race theory, Marxism, postcolonial criticism, postmodernism, and psychoanalysis.

Book excerpt: In, The Key to the Universe, the author, and her husband provide the reader with a guide to a range of mystical symbols in the world around them, including the mystical significance of numbers and shapes. She shares with the reader that during a particularly dark period, when she herself endured an episode of "soul hunger" she found guidance in symbols around her and hopes that this book will guide others who feel similarly that their lives and their spirituality are lacking in ways they cannot explain. In this book, Curtiss hopes to explore some of life's bigger questions and provide real answers with mysticism, symbolism, and a deep dedication to spirituality. This book covers the mystical symbols in the world around us, including the mystical significance of numbers and shapes. The authors explain the evolution of man and the Cosmos, illustrate the cosmic principles of all manifestation, and prove the relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm mathematically. They also mathematically demonstrate the principles of Christian Mysticism as expounded by The Order of Christian Mystics (Order of the 15). In addition to giving the spiritual interpretation of the 1st 22 numbers, the authors include an explanation of the esoteric meaning of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet which correspond to them, together with the symbology of the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot cards. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original work published in 1917. Please copy and paste the link for our books: https: //saucerianbooks.blogspot.com/
