Book A Comparison of Chromic Acid and Sulfuric Acid Anodizing

Download or read book A Comparison of Chromic Acid and Sulfuric Acid Anodizing written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of federal and state mandates restricting the use of hexavalent chromium, it was deemed worthwhile to compare the corrosion protection afforded 2219-T87 aluminum alloy by both Type I chromic acid and Type II sulfuric acid anodizing per MIL-A-8625. Corrosion measurements were made on large, flat 2219-T87 aluminum alloy sheet material with an area of 1 cm(exp 2) exposed to a corrosive medium of 3.5-percent sodium chloride at pH 5.5. Both ac electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the dc polarization resistance techniques were employed. The results clearly indicate that the corrosion protection obtained by Type II sulfuric acid anodizing is superior, and no problems should result by substituting Type II sulfuric acid anodizing for Type I chromic acid anodizing. Book Thin Film Corrosion of Anodized High Strength Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Thin Film Corrosion of Anodized High Strength Aluminum Alloys written by H. M. DeJarnette and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress is reported in the development of a procedure for measuring the susceptibility of alloys to marine atmospheric corrosion. The availability of a variety of aluminum alloys, tempers, and protection methods necessitates a test method which is rapid, reproducible, quantitative, and representative of the atmosphere corrosion experienced by Naval components. A testing apparatus is herein described as are the specimen preparation techniques, test environment, and data reduction method. The corrosion cell is designed to subject the specimen both to a thin, salty film of moisture and to a controlled electrical potential. The resulting current through the specimen is recorded as a function of this potential and as a function of time. To minimize the effects of random variations, both the order in which tests are run and specimen selection are randomized. Preliminary times-to-failure from aluminum alloy 7075-T73 specimens with sulfuric acid anodizing, with sulfuric acid anodizing plus sealing, and with chromic acid anodizing, corroborate the validity of the procedure. As some specimens survived more than 200 hours before onset of pitting corrosion, planned methods for shortening the test are given. (Author).

Book The Metallurgy of Anodizing Aluminum

Download or read book The Metallurgy of Anodizing Aluminum written by Jude Mary Runge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the history of the concepts critical to the discovery and development of aluminum, its alloys and the anodizing process are reviewed to provide a foundation for the challenges, achievements, and understanding of the complex relationship between the aluminum alloy and the reactions that occur during anodic oxidation. Empirical knowledge that has long sustained industrial anodizing is clarified by viewing the process as corrosion science, addressing each element of the anodizing circuit in terms of the Tafel Equation. This innovative approach enables a new level of understanding and engineering control for the mechanisms that occur as the oxide nucleates and grows, developing its characteristic highly ordered structure, which impact the practical function of the anodic aluminum oxide.

Book Fluorinated Coatings and Finishes Handbook

Download or read book Fluorinated Coatings and Finishes Handbook written by Laurence W. McKeen and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2015-10-11 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorinated Coatings and Finishes Handbook: The Definitive User's Guide, Second Edition, addresses important, frequently posed questions by end-user design engineers, coaters, and coatings suppliers on fluorinated coatings and finishes, thus enabling them to achieve superior product qualities and shorter product and process development times. The book provides broad coverage of these fluorinated polymer coatings, including the best known PTFE, polytetrafluoroethylene, first trademarked as Teflon® and ePTFE (GoreTex®). Their inherent qualities of low surface tension, non-stick, low friction, high melting point, and chemical inertness make fluoropolymer coatings widely desirable across thousands of industrial and consumer applications, but these properties also make it difficult to convert fluoropolymers to coatings that have sufficient adhesion to the substrate to be protected. In this book, readers learn how fluoropolymer coatings are used and made, about their pigments and fillers, binders, dispersion processes, additives, and solvents. The book includes substrate preparation, coating properties, baking and curing processes, performance tests, applications, and health and safety. Provides a practical handbook that covers the theory and practice of fluorinated coatings, including the structure and properties of binders and how to get a non-stick coating to stick to the substrate Covers liquid and power fluorocoatings, their applications methods, curing and baking processes, and their commercial end uses Presents detailed discussions of testing methods related to fluorocoatings, common coating defects, how they form, how to eliminate them, and the health and safety aspects of using and applying fluorocoatings Includes substrate preparation, coating properties, baking and curing processes, performance tests, applications, and health and safety
