Download or read book War Communication and the Politics of Culture in Early Modern Venice written by Anastasia Stouraiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together cultural history and critical imperial studies, Anastasia Stouraiti shows how war and territorial expansion shaped seventeenth-century Venetian culture and society. Using an extensive array of sources, Stouraiti tests conventional assumptions about republicanism, commercial peace and cross-cultural exchange and offers a new approach to the study of the Republic of Venice. By bringing the history of communication in dialogue with empire-building and colonial conquest in the Mediterranean, this book provides an original interpretation of the politics of knowledge in wartime Venice. Stouraiti demonstrates that the Venetian-Ottoman War of the Morea (1684-1699) was mediated through a diverse range of cultural mechanisms of patrician elite domination that orchestrated the production of popular consent. Exploring the militarisation of the public sphere and the orientalist discourse associated with it, Stouraiti exposes the surprising connections between bellicose foreign policies and domestic power politics in a state celebrated as the most serene republic of merchants.

Download or read book Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation written by Robin Healey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 1185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

Download or read book Science and the Marketplace in Early Modern Italy written by Brendan Maurice Dooley and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Brendan Dooley examines Italian scientific communications in early modern history. He demonstrates that Italian science between the age of Galileo and the age of Galvani and Volta underwent two revolutions. While the methodological innovations of the time have received copious attention, Dooley is concerned with the revolution in published communicatons, which has hardly been studied at all. What his innovative research shows, in sum, is that the accomplishments of Galvani and Volta were not based upon a cultural void, but rather a century and a half of fervid activity aiming to consolidate the accomplishments of Galileo, reinforce scientific institutions, establish observation and experiment as the dominant methodology, and improve science's public relations. This process challenged traditional institutional hierarchies of specialized knowledge and had far-reaching, interdisciplinary implications for the development of universities, the profession of university science researcher, the academies, and even state government.

Download or read book Promoting Experimental Learning written by Marie Boas Hall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all that has been written in the past decades about the first half-century of the Royal Society's existence, no one has so far examined just what took place at the Society's weekly meetings nor how far they fulfilled the expressed aim of promoting 'experimental learning'. Students of the early Royal Society have often taken its aim to have been fully expressed in the writings of such Fellows as Boyle, Hooke and Newton, aware that Hooke especially performed very many experiments at the meetings between 1662 and 1703, while he and others wrote about the necessity of doing so. This study attempts to analyse the content of the meetings in detail in order to discover how far and in what manner the aims of the Society were fulfilled in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This book for the first time explores the practices of the Society's Fellows, and shows how these altered between 1660 and 1727.

Download or read book The Boyle Papers written by Michael Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Boyle (1627-91) was the most influential British scientist of the late seventeenth century. His huge archive, which has been at the Royal Society since 1769, has only recently been explored, leading to a new understanding of many aspects of Boyle's thought. This volume brings together the essential materials for understanding the Boyle Papers. It includes a revised version of Michael Hunter's fundamental study of the archive, first published in 1992, which elucidates its history and the way in which handwriting evidence can be used to identify chronological strata within it, thus making it possible to trace the development of Boyle's ideas. Other chapters deal with such components of the Papers as Boyle's 'workdiaries' and his projected Paralipomena; another uses material from the archive to illuminate the making of a key work by Boyle, his Free Inquiry into the Vulgarly Receiv'd Notion of Nature; while another illustrates that, large as the archive is, it is only a part of what existed in Boyle's lifetime. Parts of the content have been published before, but they are here presented in revised and fully indexed form. Lastly, the volume includes a completely revised version of the catalogue of the Boyle Papers, Letters and ancillary manuscripts originally published in 1992, updating it by tabulating the extensive use of the archive made in recent years in connection with the publication of the definitive editions of Boyle's Works and Correspondence (1999-2001). In all, the volume will be indispensable to anyone with a serious interest in Boyle.
