Book Parental Leave

Download or read book Parental Leave written by Erin McCarthy and published by Lawbook Company. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide covers parental leave entitlements and procedures under the Fair Work Act 2009 and Paid Parental Leave Act 2010. The relationship between these two pieces of federal legislation and the rights and obligations they create are complex. Increasingly as employees take up the governmental paid scheme, employers and HR managers will have to deal with challenging issues such as employees maintaining contact with the workplace while on leave and rights to return to work. This is in addition to the 'paymaster' function which became the responsibility of employers as of 1 July 2011. PARENTAL LEAVE: A USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE by Erin McCarthy, Elise Jenkin and Andrew Stewart of Piper Alderman follows the course of a parental leave application. Using a clear layout, bullet points and case studies, it brings together the issues that come up under different pieces of legislation to help IR/HR practitioners and union/ employer advisors meet the needs of clients and employees. Academics will also appreciate the analysis of parental leave and its development in the context of the Australian workplace relations system.

Book Taking Time

Download or read book Taking Time written by Mindy Fried and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing movement among corporations to provide family benefits in order to attract and retain women workers. They recognize that these benefits have become a cost of doing business. Many of these benefits, like child care and elder care, areaimed at supporting employees' ability to stay on the job. Parental leave policies are an exception, because they involve taking time away from the job. This timely book provides an inside look at life in a major U.S. corporation, focusing on the impact of workplace culture on the use of parental leave and those who use it. Fried begins by describing why parental leave is critical to making parenting the job of both parents in two-parent families. She examines the varied experiences of different levels of workers in how parental leave policy is used. The author tells a rich and textured tale of day-to-day life in the skyscraper offices of a large corporation. How people dress, what their offices look like, which cafeteria they eat in, how the supervisors and supervised talk-all these things are part of the fabric of corporate culture that Fried describes. Most of us live in work cultures that value overtime. Fried argues that, as a "time policy" parental leave clashes with the powerful norm that corporate employees must work long and hard. Taking time for parenting-a job that is devalued in our culture-may be perceived as "taking time away" from the company, and, in particular, from the company's productivity.

Book Maternity Leave

Download or read book Maternity Leave written by Victoria Gordon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maternity leave is a complex issue, both personally and professionally. And, more often than not, policy differs from practice. Based on interviews that highlight the perspectives and perceptions of new mothers, Maternity Leave: Policy and Practice examines the disconnect between maternity leave policy and practice. It presents the history and development of maternity leave policies and related legislation, and then provides a fresh perspective for understanding through individual interviews of women who recently utilized maternity leave. The book also examines themes and patterns developed from the interviews, such as inconsistencies in administration of maternity leave policies, timing, transition back to work, child care, breastfeeding and pumping, and unmet needs and professional concerns. It also gives a voice to those who are absent from the core interviews—women who have children at a young age, men who utilize paternity leave, women in same-sex relationships who start families, and women who choose not to have children. The book highlights why some colleagues may be unsupportive of the utilization of maternity leave. A single-source guide to understanding maternity leave, the book contains a wealth of information, including an overview of legislation related to pregnancy and maternity leave; trends in birth rates, fertility rates, employment patterns, and the relationship to the types of maternity leave offered and taken; issues related to maternal health; an international comparison of policies; and practical recommendations for policy and organizational change. It not only offers a comprehensive and complete understanding of the complexities of maternity leave, both in policy and in practice, but also practical recommendations for policy and organizational change.
