Book International Peacekeeping The Yearbook of International Peace Operations

Download or read book International Peacekeeping The Yearbook of International Peace Operations written by Harvey Langholtz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Peacekeeping is devoted to reporting upon and analyzing international peacekeeping with an emphasis upon legal and policy issues, but is not limited to these issues. It is recognized that in today's world there is a wealth of information available from the internet and through other sources. It is therefore the goal of this Yearbook to make this information available in one publication which both organizes and records events over the course of a year through analytical articles, a chronicle, primary documents, and a bibliography. Topics include inter alia peacekeeping, peace, war, conflict resolution, diplomacy, international law, international security, humanitarian relief, humanitarian law, and terrorism. The Yearbook is of scholarly quality but is not narrowly theoretical. It provides the interested public -- diplomats, civil servants, politicians, the military, academics, journalists, NGO employees, and serious citizens -- with a document of record, comment, and a starting point for further research on peacekeeping and related topics. This is achieved not only by the provision of 'basic documents' (on CD ROM), such as Security Council Resolutions and Reports of the UN Secretary- General, but also by expert commentaries on world events. Peacekeeping is treated in a pragmatic light, seen as a form of international military cooperation for the preservation or restoration of international peace and security. Attention is focused not only on UN peacekeeping operations, but other missions as well. This Yearbook is the continuation of the journal International Peacekeeping.

Book Grass in their Mouths The Upper Doab of India under the Company s Magna Charta 1793 1830

Download or read book Grass in their Mouths The Upper Doab of India under the Company s Magna Charta 1793 1830 written by Dirk H.A. Kolff and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on the pre-Bentinck period of Indian history has taken little notice of the inevitable dilemmas of colonial rule as they became visible in the districts. This book argues that the disdain the eighteenth-century Westminster parliaments expressed both for Indians and the East India Company induced the Bengal civil service to formulate for itself a corporate identity that, because of its distant and self-centered character, prevented it to acquire an executive hold on most levels of the Indian administration. The core of the book consists of superbly-detailed studies of the ways in which, in the Ganges-Jumna doab, villagers, revenue farmers, Indian policemen and revenue officials, bankers and judges struggled to overcome or profit from this feature of the colonial administration.

Book A Family Portrait

Download or read book A Family Portrait written by Betty Littleton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The governing purpose for A Family Portrait from beginning to end has been to delineate the kinds of people the writer's forebears were-their characters, their habits and values, successes and failures-and to trace in their lives the history that encompassed them. Their significance lies in their brilliant ordinariness. In them we come to see the continuity of human life which funnels the past through us to the future. The author writes about those generations before her, "no matter how different we are from each other, our experience is inevitably the same. We know happiness and grief, hope and despair, love and the kind of resentment and fear that grow into hate. We know disappointment and humiliation, exhilaration and the pride that comes from small triumphs. We are selfish and cowardly but all of us have moments of heroism when our own generosity and courage take us by surprise. Our families help us see these things. Imperfect as they were, they believed in us and loved us without reservation in our own imperfection. These gifts we keep and use and pass along to the next generation, hoping they are improved but knowing that our best-we hope we have done our best--shifts with each new perspective. This is what it means to be a part of the communion of saints, and these are the saints that sustain us."
