Book excerpt: The object of this study is to describe and analyse a period of profound social and economical change within the metalliferous mining industry of Cornwall, the thesis being that, consequent upon world expansion of mineral production, changes were forced upon the Cornish industry. These resulted in a complete restructuring of mining in Cornwall. The consequences for the men and women working in, or dependent upon, the industry were not beneficial. They resulted in the worsening of an already hard and dangerous way of life. The study is in two parts. The first deals with the events and changes that occurred within Cornish mining from 1870 until its virtual demise in 1921. The first changes were technological but such innovations had consequences that made further change inevitable. There followed a consolidation of the Cornish mining and smelting companies and their reconstruction from the 1890s as Limited Liability companies. Reconstruction was followed by a period of speculative boom, by the demands of a war economy from 1914 and, subsequently, by the crisis of the 1920s. Although this crisis was caused by the post-war fall in metal prices, the failure of the mine companies to undertake development or build up capital reserves over a long period, together with the changed social and economic relations within the industry, made easy its abandonment by capital. The second part examines the Cornish miner in the wider context of the world outside the mine. The repercussions of industrial change upon this world are discussed with reference to rural customs and practices. The role of women, and the various formal and informal systems of social support and control, are examined. Labour relations and the growth of Trade Unions are discussed, both in the Cornish and the international context. It is argued throughout that the key to understanding the change within Cornwall is the understanding of the links, both of capital and labour, with the development of metal mining overseas. Thus the study ends with an examination of the migration patterns of Cornish miners and the part they played in expanding the mining frontiers of the world.

Each group of immigrants from this region--the Cornish, English, Irish, and Welsh--has played a significant role in American history. Historic records show that some early nineteenth-century Cornish immigrants were farmers and settled in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. However, the majority of early Cornish immigrants were miners, and much of their influence was felt in the Upper Peninsula of the state. Many of the underground miners from Cornwall got their start in this region before they migrated to other mining regions throughout the United States. Hard-working families came from throughout the peninsula of Cornwall, bringing their history, recipes, songs, religions, and other traditions to Michigan's northern mining country. This nineteenth-century migration brought them to new homes in Keweenaw County, Houghton County, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor, and Presque Isle. In the 1830s, newly arrived immigrants also settled in the lower parts of Michigan, in Macomb, Washtenaw, Lenawee, and Oakland counties. The automobile boom of the 1920s sent many of these immigrants and their children to Metro Detroit from the Upper Peninsula, where their traditions are perpetuated today.
