T. graeci e codici Alexandrino, Oxford, 1799, and translated into French by Frédéric Macler in 1896. In the manuscript which transmits the text to us, the book of Daniel appears, divided into thirteen "visions." It is then followed by this text, called the "Fourteenth vision."

Book The Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel

Download or read book The Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel written by Matthias Henze and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2001 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthias Henze has prepared the editio princeps of the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel, a hitherto unknown apocalypse composed in the early seventh century A.D. in Syriac and preserved in a single manuscript only. Following an introduction to the Apocalypse, the book includes an edition of the Syriac text, an English translation, and a detailed commentary.Like the biblical Daniel on which it is closely modelled, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel is an 'historical' apocalypse, i.e. it has two parts: the 'historical' first part relates the adventures of Daniel in midrashic form, from his deportation by Nebuchadnezzar until his return to Persia from Jerusalem which he visits with King Darius. Upon returning to Persia, Daniel has a sequence of apocalyptic visions which are recorded in the latter, eschatological part of the text and which describe the gradual unfolding of the end of time. The Syriac Apocalypse has preserved a number of motifs worth exploring: the messianic woes, the Gates of the North erected by Alexander the Great, a description of Antichrist's physiognomy, the Second Coming of Christ, and the new Jerusalem. Equally important, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel bears testimony to the vibrant apocalyptic currency in Syriac Christianity.

Book excerpt: When Manasses set up a carved image in the house of the Lord, and built altars in the two courts of the house, to all the host of Heaven, and us'd inchantments and witchcraft, and familiar spirits, and for his great wickedness was invaded by the army ofAsserhadon King of Assyria, and carried captive to Babylon; the book of the Law was lost till the eighteenth year of his grandsonJosiah. Then Hilkiah the High Priest, upon repairing the Temple, found it there: and the King lamented that their fathers had not done after the words of the book, and commanded that it should be read to the people, and caused the people to renew the holy covenant with God. This is the book of the Law now extant. When Shishak came out of Egypt and spoil'd the temple, and brought Judah into subjection to the monarchy of Egypt, (which was in the fifth year of Rehoboam) the Jews continued under great troubles for about twenty years; being without the true God, and without a teaching Priest, and without Law: and in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries, and nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city, for God did vex them with all adversity. But when Shishak was dead, and Egypt fell into troubles, Judah had quiet ten years; and in that time Asabuilt fenced cities in Judah, and got up an army of 580000 men, with which, in the 15th year of his reign, he met and overcameZerah the Ethiopian, who had conquered Egypt and Lybia, and Troglodytica, and came out with an army of 1000000 Lybians andEthiopians, to recover the countries conquered by Sesac. And after this victory Asa dethroned his mother for idolatry, and he renewed the Altar, and brought new vessels of gold and silver into the Temple; and he and the people entered into a new covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers, upon pain of death to those who worshiped other Gods; and his son Jehosaphat took away the high places, and in the third year of his reign sent some of his Princes, and of the Priests and Levites, to teach in the cities of Judah: and they had the book of the Law with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people. This is that book of the Law which was afterwards lost in the reign of Manasses, and found again in the reign of Josiah, and therefore it was written before the third year of Jehosaphat. The same book of the Law was preserved and handed down to posterity by the Samaritans, and therefore was received by the ten Tribes before their captivity. For when the ten Tribes were captivated, a Priest or the captivity was sent back to Bethel, by order of the King of Assyria, to instruct the new inhabitants of Samaria, in the manner of the God of the land; and the Samaritans had thePentateuch from this Priest, as containing the law or manner of the God of the land, which he was to teach them. For they persevered in the religion which he taught them, joining with it the worship of their own Gods; and by persevering in what they had been taught, they preserved this book of their Law in the original character of the Hebrews, while the two Tribes, after their return from Babylon, changed the character to that of the Chaldees, which they had learned at Babylon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Then and Now is an interesting study of how God deals with men and kingdoms. He takes Daniel from Judah and has him transported as a captive to Babylon, where he serves the royal court for approximately ninety years. God used him to save the soothsayers, magicians, and Chaldeans from death when they could not interpret Nebuchadnezzer's dream. At this time, God prepares Daniel to serve Him by giving him the interpretation when Daniel and his three friends pray for God to reveal His wisdom and knowledge to them to be able to interpret the dream. Daniel shows Nebuchadnezzer that God is in charge of all the affairs of man and only he controls destinies of men, and that He God puts men on thrones and dethrones them when it serves His purposes.Daniel served this erstwhile king for over 40 years and Daniel served at least until the time of Cyrus the Great. Through his influence, the Babylonians were Iong awaiting the coming of the Prince of Peace, whereas they responded and found Jesus in Bethlehem, Judeah, approximately six hundred years later after the time of Daniel.

Book excerpt: From the prophecies of Daniel flower all New Testament teachings about the future. Christs final words about coming events (Matt. 24-25; Luke 21 and Mark 13) build on Daniels predictions about the abomination of desolation, a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations, the Son of man coming with the clouds of heaven, the end coming like a flood, and the destruction of the temple and the end of the world. Our Lords warning about nations in distress and perplexity (Luke 21:25) has its seed in the first great Apocalypse written by the captive seer in Babylon. No other book of the Old Testament had such tremendous influence on the New Testament and the early Christian church. Scholars acknowledge that apocalyptic was the mother of Christian theology. Ours is an age desperately seeking a theodicy, a vindication of Gods goodness and justice in the face of evil and the wisdom and benevolence of his ways. This Daniel provides. His prophecies understood prove that the world is a ship and not an iceberg, and that human beings are not just the product of time plus chance plus mud. Here is an answer to existentialism, atheism, and post-modernism. Dr. Fords book provides an interpretative summary of Daniel that will prove a key of untold value for all earnest Bible students.

Book excerpt: Daniel, with an Introduction to Apocalyptic Literture is Volume XX of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical process so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. In his introduction to Jewish apocalyptic literature, John J. Collins examines the main characteristics and discusses the setting and intention of apocalyptic literature. Collins begins his discussion of Daniel with a survey of the book's anomalies and an examination of the bearing of form criticism on them. He goes on to discuss the book's place in the canon and the problems with its coherence and bilingualism. Collins's section-by-section commentary provides a structural analysis (verse-by-verse) of each section, as well as discussion of its genre, setting, and intention. The book includes bibliographies and a glossary of genres and formulas that offers concise definitions with examples and bibliography.

One such prophecy is given in Daniel 2:44, which foretells the establishment of God’s kingdom of heaven brought down to earth. This event can be studied in Revelation 19:11–20:6. Another of these prophecies is found in Daniel 7:24–25, and its fulfillment is recorded in Revelation 13:1–3. This prophecy speaks of the Roman Empire coming to life again during the tribulation period and, indeed, has already been formed under the name of the European Union. Because of this special relationship between Revelation and Daniel, I have put together the two books in this particular format to expedite and simplify its study.

Book Observations Upon the Prophecies of Daniel

Download or read book Observations Upon the Prophecies of Daniel written by Isaac Newton, Sir and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John By Sir Isaac Newton The End of Days The Book of Daniel is one of the books of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. It is notable for its changes from Hebrew to Aramaic and back. The first part of the book, comprising six chapters, is the story of Daniel set in the courts of Babylonian and Achaemenid Empire during the time of the Babylonian captivity. The remainder of the book contain three visions and their interpretation. There are differences between the fundamentalist view of Daniel and the scholarly consensus. Conservative Biblical scholars and evangelical commentators hold that its stories tell of real events and real prophecies written during and shortly after the Babylonian captivity by a real Daniel living in the late sixth century BCE. The scholarly consensus is that the Book of Daniel (or at least the last three chapters) was written after Antiochus IV Epiphanes desecrated the altar of the Temple of Jerusalem around 167 BCE. In this view, Daniel was written in reaction to that incident and the final redaction of the work dates to the second century BCE. For secular scholars, the issue was settled over a century ago, but many Christians do not accept this line of reasoning, looking to Jesus' implicit approval of the book by quoting from it in his teachings.
