Book The Coordination Chemistry of Metalloenzymes

Download or read book The Coordination Chemistry of Metalloenzymes written by I. Bertini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembling a program in bioinorganic chemistry that is scientifi cally relevant, well defined, and self-consistent is not an easy task. In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase. The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc .. We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. For these reasons these topics have been the subject of the NATO-ASI held at San Miniato, Pisa, Italy, from May 28 to June 8, 1982. We hope we can transfer here the main conclusions of what (we believe) was a very stimulating scientific meeting. We would like to thank the local saving bank, Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, for helping in many ways. The financial contribution from the European Research Office of the US Army, and from the Bruker Spectrospin s.r.l., Italy, is also acknowledged. The National Science Foundation of the United States has provided a travel grant to one of the participants from the U.S.A. We are grateful to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division which provided a grant to finance this Institute.

Book Coordination Chemistry XVI

Download or read book Coordination Chemistry XVI written by D. A. Brown and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination Chemistry XVI is a compendium of papers that deals with structured absorption band, intra-molecular electron transfer, and the influence of natural and synthetic ligands on the transport and function of metal ions in the environment. Experiments show that the chemical, spectral and kinetic results of the physical state of an enzyme can be a significant experimental variable that will change function-related-conformations. Another paper points out the dangers of assigning weakly structured bands to partially resolved vibrations, to lower symmetry, to spin-orbit coupling, and to the Jahn-Teller effects. One paper deals with intra-molecular electron transfer in three manifestations: 1) in traditional oxidation-reduction reactions; 2) in induced electron transfer; and 3) in mixed valence complexes. Another paper discusses the reactivity of polynuclear metal complexes involving metal-metal bonds with simple inorganic and organic molecules, particularly, polynuclear aggregates' basic structural forms and polynuclear's fluxional nature. One paper investigates the environmental effects of coordination compounds that disturb the natural balance and levels of metal ions and metal complexes in the ecosystem. The paper cites examples of pollutions caused by abnormal amounts of metal salts and metal complexes introduced in the ecosystem, and the presence of synthetic ligands or abnormal levels of natural ligands in the environment. The compendium is suitable for analytical and organic chemists, chemical engineers, environmentalists, and students of biochemistry.

Book On Being Well coordinated A Half century Of Research On Transition Metal Complexes

Download or read book On Being Well coordinated A Half century Of Research On Transition Metal Complexes written by John L Burmeister and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-10-14 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book distils the research accomplishments of Professor Fred Basolo during the five decades when he served as a world leader in the modern renaissance of inorganic chemistry. Its primary focus is on the very important area of chemistry known as coordination chemistry. Most of the elements in the periodic table are metals, and most of the chemistry of metals involves coordination chemistry. This is the case in the currently significant areas of research, including organometallic homogenous catalysis, biological reactions of metalloproteins, and even the solid state extended structures of new materials. In these systems, the metals are of primary importance because they are the sites of ligand substitution or redox reactions. In the solid materials, the coordination number of the metal and its stereochemistry are of major importance. Some fifty years of research on transition metal complexes carried out in the laboratory of Professor Basolo at Northwestern University is recorded here as selected scientific publications. The book is divided into three different major research areas, each dealing with some aspect of coordination chemistry. In each case, introductory remarks are presented which indicate what prompted the research projects and what the major accomplishments were. Although the research was of the academic, curiosity-driven type, some aspects have proven to be useful to others involved in projects that were much more applied in nature.

Book Introduction to Coordination Chemistry

Download or read book Introduction to Coordination Chemistry written by Geoffrey A. Lawrance and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of coordination chemistry lies the coordinate bond, in its simplest sense arising from donation of a pair of electrons from a donor atom to an empty orbital on a central metalloid or metal. Metals overwhelmingly exist as their cations, but these are rarely met ‘naked’ – they are clothed in an array of other atoms, molecules or ions that involve coordinate covalent bonds (hence the name coordination compounds). These metal ion complexes are ubiquitous in nature, and are central to an array of natural and synthetic reactions. Written in a highly readable, descriptive and accessible style Introduction to Coordination Chemistry describes properties of coordination compounds such as colour, magnetism and reactivity as well as the logic in their assembly and nomenclature. It is illustrated with many examples of the importance of coordination chemistry in real life, and includes extensive references and a bibliography. Introduction to Coordination Chemistry is a comprehensive and insightful discussion of one of the primary fields of study in Inorganic Chemistry for both undergraduate and non-specialist readers.

Book excerpt: Coordination Chemistry is a collection of invited lectures presented at the 20th International Conference on Coordination Chemistry held in Calcutta, India, on December 10-14, 1979, and organized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in cooperation with India's National Science Academy and the Department of Science & Technology. The conference covers a wide range of topics relating to coordination chemistry, including the stereochemistry of coordination compounds; the mechanism of the base hydrolysis of octahedral cobalt(III) complexes; and metal chelates as anticancer agents. This book consists of 26 chapters and opens with a discussion on some developments in the stereochemistry of coordination complexes, including the creation of ""sepulchrate"" ions of cobalt, chromium, ruthenium, and platinum; the preparation of planar complexes containing ligands spanning trans-positions; and the separation of optical and configurational isomers of octahedral complexes containing unsymmetrical and asymmetric ligands. The following chapters explore complex chemistry and the mimicry of metalloenzymes; metal complexes with functionalized macrocyclic ligands; binuclear complexes in electron transfer reactions; and application of coordination chemistry in biology and medicine. The synthetic and structural chemistry of transition metals is also considered, along with linear free energy relationships in coordination chemistry. This monograph will be a valuable source of information for practitioners and research workers in the field of pure and applied chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry.
