Book Making and Unmaking the Carolingians

Download or read book Making and Unmaking the Carolingians written by Stuart Airlie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does power manifest itself in individuals? Why do people obey authority? And how does a family, if they are the source of such dominance, convey their superiority and maintain their command in a pre-modern world lacking speedy communications, standing armies and formalised political jurisdiction? Here, Stuart Airlie expertly uses this idea of authority as a lens through which to explore one of the most famous dynasties in medieval Europe: the Carolingians. Ruling the Frankish realm from 751 to 888, the family of Charlemagne had to be ruthless in asserting their status and adept at creating a discourse of Carolingian legitimacy in order to sustain their supremacy. Through its nuanced analysis of authority, politics and family, Making and Unmaking the Carolingians, 751-888 outlines the system which placed the Carolingian dynasty at the centre of the Frankish world. In doing so, Airlie sheds important new light on both the rise and fall of the Carolingian empire and the nature of power in medieval Europe more generally.

Book Neo Calvinism and the French Revolution

Download or read book Neo Calvinism and the French Revolution written by James Eglinton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution was the scene of much intellectual and social upheaval. Its impact touched a wide range of subjects: the relationship of the church to the state, social relationships, science, literature, fashion, philosophy and theology. Although the French Revolution's momentum was felt across Europe and North America, it met a particularly interesting response in the Netherlands, at that time the scene of a burgeoning neo-Calvinist movement. In that context, the likes of Groen van Prinsterer, Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck responded to the French Revolution's ideals and influence in a variety of intellectual and practical ways. This book approaches that Dutch response from a range of historical and theological perspectives, and in so doing explores the relationship between the French Revolution and the development of neo-Calvinism. Beginning with historical portraits of Bavinck and Kuyper in relation to the Revolution, the perspectives offered also include, amongst others, the place of multilingualism in neo-Calvinism and the Revolution, neo-Calvinist and Revolutionary approaches to fashion, a dialogue between Kuyperian theology and Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy, and a contemporary neo-Calvinist critique of French laïcité. This book forms part of a wider Project neo-Calvinism supported by the Theologische Universiteit Kampen and the VU University Amsterdam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cartulary of 1211 is the oldest surviving register produced by the chancery of the counts of Champagne. This first edition of the cartulary contains 121 letters received from the barons and prelates of the county during the rule of Count Thibaut III (1198-1201) and the first decade of the regency of his widow, Countess Blanche (1201-22). They deal primarily with feudal matters–homage, tenure, the construction and rendering of castles--and lordship over property and rural communities. Since only one-third of the original letters survive, the cartulary copies are particularly valuable in capturing the range of written records entering the chancery of a major French principality around 1200. The introduction to the volume traces the evolution of aristocratic letters patent from the 1140s and argues that they were far more important in the twelfth century, both for transactions between laymen and for transactions with religious houses, than historians of medieval diplomacy have allowed. The introduction goes on to discuss the evolution of the chancery in the twelfth century, the creation of a formal chancery archive in the 1190s, and the organization and contents of the cartulary complied in 1211.

Book Women and the Counter Reformation in Early Modern M nster

Download or read book Women and the Counter Reformation in Early Modern M nster written by Simone Laqua-O'Donnell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and the Counter-Reformation in Early Modern Münster examines how women from different social backgrounds encountered the Counter-Reformation. The focus is on Münster, a city in the north of Germany, which was exposed to powerful Protestant influences which culminated in the notorious Anabaptist kingdom of 1534. After the defeat of the radical Protestants, the city was returned to Catholicism and a stringent programme of reform was enforced. By examining concubinage, piety, marriage, deviance, and convent reform, core issues of the Counter-Reformation's quest for renewal, this fascinating study shows how women participated in the social and religious changes of the time, and how their lives were shaped by the Counter-Reformation. Employing research into the political, religious, and social institutions, and using an impressive variety of sources, Simone Laqua-O'Donnell engages with the way women experienced the new religiosity, morality, and discipline that was introduced to the city of Münster during this turbulent time.

Book Rethinking Canada

  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Rethinking Canada written by Veronica Jane Strong-Boag and published by Copp Clark Professional. This book was released on 1991 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly revised and updated, this fourth edition, of Rethinking Canada: The Promise of Women's History is part of the continuing teminist effort to discover what it means to be women and Canadians. Rethinking Canada examines key developments in Canadian history -- from the founding of New, France to the present -- while at the same time highlighting the distinctive texture of women's experiences and identities. This decidedly non-traditional reconstruction of Canadian history focuses on the lives, struggles, and contributions of women, enlarging and diversifying the picture of the past found in conventional historical accounts. Of the 26 readings in this volume, 16 are new. Subjects range from the impact of colonialism on gender relations in Aboriginal societies; to the immigration of Japanese 'picture brides' in early twentieth-century British Columbia; to transnational political alliances formed by Canadian and Mexican women in response to NAFTA. Other topics include sexuality, workforce trends, gender and public policy, and much more. The selections aim, above all, to bring diverse and marginalized groups of women out of the historical shadows. The voices of First Nations women, women of colour, and immigrant women, for example, resound clearly in this volume. An informative introduction to each reading situates the article in its specific historical and historiographical context, and each introduction concludes with questions designed to stimulate analysis and discussion of the text. By presenting current scholarship in the context of three decades of research into Canadian women's history, Rethinking Canada, Fourth Edition, offers new and fascinating perspectives on women and on Canada.
