Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism and Rationalism as Opposed to Pure Christianity The following Discourse or Lecture, recently de livered at the instance of kindred Societies, first in Glasgow and then in Edinburgh, is now published at their joint request.1 Both Societies are made up of the Sons of Ministers of the United Presbyterian Church, who combine chiefly\ to render help to widows and fatherless children of their own class; and both have been already productive of no small amount of good. Their claims may be pleaded on many grounds, and not least from the services rendered by the ministers of that Church, during its past history, to evangelical religion. Few de' nominations, it is believed, have hitherto been pre served more free from the extremes of error described in the following Lecture 3 and as this result, under God, can only be ascribed to Christian teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism and the Republic: A Discussion of the Purposes, Assumptions, Principles and Methods of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy He does not wait until the foemen are thundering at the gates, before he announces to the garrison the danger that threatens. Should he do so, he might justly be judged a traitor, in the pay of the enemy. So, when God's watchman, guarding the dearest interests of church and state, sees rising from other lands the clouds of desolation which betoken the ruin wrought by tyranny; when he marks the steady aggression of the enemies of truth and man; hears their threatenings and sees their weapons; when he observes the fleeing millions who, running away from Oppression, seek in our freer government a refuge from their tyrants, he cannot wait until the foot of the foeman is on the threshold of our gates, his hand on our throats, and his decrees proclaimed in our market-places, before he sounds the alarm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism: Incompatible With Republican Institutions The subject proposed for tins essay involves principles vital to the welfare of every age and country. Religious belief is implanted in the nature of man. It is the only bond that connects him with the skies. The needs of the body, its pains and even its pleasures perpetually remind him that he is born of earth, and must return whence he came; but this feeling assures him that, in part at least, he may claim a nobler origin and more important destiny. It is the impulse of an immortal and imprisoned spirit, a yearning after the freedom of a higher world. The vice and barbarism of a people will not destroy it; they may oppress it with the most senseless and fantastic ceremonies, they may stifle it beneath cruel rights and degrading customs, but it will still exist; they can never eradicate it. Book Roman Methods of Controversy as Exemplified by the Catholic Truth Society

This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Methods of Controversy as Exemplified by the Catholic Truth Society: A Lecture Delivered in St. John's Hall, May 15th, 1893 This edition, guaranteed by the infallible Pope, so swarmed wit/z errors that it was called in almost immediately and Clement VIII published a new Vulgate in 1392 differing - from that of I 590 in several thousand places and likewise issued under penalty of excommunication for any deviation from it. Here was and is surely a puzzle for Roman Catholics. The value of the dogma of infallibility is, we are assured, that it makes one so certain what to do and believe in all matters of faith and practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Difficulties of Romanism At various intervals, during the course of some years past, my attention has been turned to that part of the Latin controversy, which respects the evidence afforded by the early ecclesiastical writers. I. It appeared to me, that, on all the great leading points of divinity, those who conversed with the apostles, and those who lived nearest to the times of the apostles, must best have known the mind of the apostles. Whence it seemed to follow, that, if the Latin church really possessed that immutability of character which is so constantly claimed on her behalf, all those various doctrines and practices, which many persons are wont to deem corruptions of the truth, must have subsisted from the apostolic age itself, and might therefore be clearly discovered in the productions of all the early ecclesiastics. Book Lectures on Romanism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Romanism Classic Reprint written by Joseph F. Berg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Romanism Every one who has studied the Holy Scriptures, is familiar with the remarkable prediction therein recorded, of the rise and reign of a certain mighty power; the greatest and most deadly enemy to the church of God, and the liberties of mankind. By Daniel, from the lofty mount of inspiration, his approach was first descried. He is introduced to him, in vision, as the "little horn;" and his rise is fixed in general terms as posterior to certain great political events. This "horn," or power, "diverse from the first," we cannot discover in any Pagan or Moslem nation. Indeed, the attempt to discover it there, instead of a Christian country, would be a positive violation of the truth of the divine prediction. The "little horn" sprung up after the rise of the fourth great beast of Daniel, which is admitted by every sound writer, to be the Roman empire. That was the power which "letteth, and did let, until it was taken out of the way," of the little horn. Hence it sprung up after the fall of the Roman pagan empire. For it sprung up after the rise of the "ten horns." But there were no ten horns, or ten distinct kingdoms in Europe previous to the fall of the pagan empire of Rome. Hence this new and "diverse horn," rose in no Pagan or Moslem country. It sprung up in Christian Europe. Besides, it is described by the spirit of inspiration as an apostacy, or "a falling away" from the Christian faith. 2 Thess. ii. 3. 1 Tim. iv. 1. This can be applied to no Pagan or Mohammedan power. These never were in the church of God. In no sense, therefore, can they be called an apostacy from the Christian faith. Thus we get rid of the argument of the Romish doctors who refer this prediction to the persecuting power of Rome Pagan. There is another identifying circumstance. Book Romanism in the Light of History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Romanism in the Light of History Classic Reprint written by Randolph H. McKim and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism in the Light of History HE history and purpose of the following essays may be brie y stated: When the famous encyclical of Pope Leo XIII. On The Reunion of Christendom was republished in the American press, it seemed fitting, as well as respectful, that Protestants should make some acknowledgment of such an appeal. Summoned by the kindly voice of the illustrious head of the Roman Church to restore unity to Christendom by submission to the sovereign spiritual authority of the Roman Pontifi, and invited to make this submission in the name of Holy Scripture, and of the ancient Fathers of the Church, I ventured to answer in an Open Letter, citing the Holy Father himself to appear at the bar of history, and justify the tremendous claim which he makes upon our consciences. The second essay in this volume is an attempt to exhibit, in a brief space, the verdict of history (which is neither Roman Catholic nor Anglican) upon all the essential points of doctrine and jurisdiction contained in the said encyclical of Pope Leo XIII. On Christian unity. My letter bore date, Feast of the Annunciation, 1897. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Romanism Unknown to Primitive Christianity written by C. S. Bird and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism Unknown to Primitive Christianity: The Substance of Lectures Delivered in the Parish Church of Gainsborough Homilies is a storehouse of excellent matter, of a positive as well as negative kind. The Homilies are too much neglected. They are spoken of as unsuited to the times, but this is by no means the case. The truths they contain are suited to all times, and they came from hearts and minds such as few have ever been blest with. To know the distinctive tenets of the Church of Rome, - the decrees of the Council of Trent, the Catechism of Trent, and the Creed of Pope Pius the Fourth, should be possessed. The Pope's Creed is printed in the following pages, immediately before the Lectures, that the reader may consult it with ease; and that those who feel any inclination to wards Romanism may see what the tenets really are, which all must profess an oath, who enter the Church of Rome. Many are seduced to join that Church, who are scarcely aware of her peculiar doctrines, till it is too late for them to draw back. Book Lectures on Romanism

Download or read book Lectures on Romanism written by John Cumming and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Romanism: Being Illustrations and Refutations of the Errors of Romanism and Tractarianism Large editions of this Work have been sold in England. This edition contains much additional matter. The first two Lectures were delivered at the Hanover Rooms in the autumn of 1850. The other Lectures have been recast by their author, their positions strengthened, the quotations verified, and the references given. The Lecturer has rewritten some parts, rendered plainer and more perspicuous other parts, and, where it appeared desirable, he has added new explanatory and illustrative notes. The absorbing controversy of the age wall lie between the principles of the Reformation on the one side, and the principles of Romanism, whether openly avowed and embodied in the Canons of the Council of Trent, and in the Canon Law, or more dimly shadowed forth and expressed by the Tractarian party.
