Book The Higher Learning in America The Annotated Edition

Download or read book The Higher Learning in America The Annotated Edition written by Thorstein Veblen and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Veblen's insights into the American university system at the outset of the twentieth century are as provocative today as they were when first published. Insisting that institutions of higher learning should be dedicated solely to the disinterested pursuit of knowledge, he urged American universities to abandon commitments to extraneous pursuits such as athletics, community service, and vocational education. He also believed that the corporate model of governance--with university boards of trustees dominated by well-to-do businessmen and university presidents who functioned essentially as businessmen in academic dress--mandated unsavory techniques of salesmanship and self-promotion that threatened to reduce institutions of higher learning to the status of competitive business enterprises."--Publisher's Web site.

Book Higher Education Rulemaking

Download or read book Higher Education Rulemaking written by Rebecca S. Natow and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at how federal regulatory policy for higher education is drafted, influenced, and enacted. Many higher education academics and administrators have only vague notions about how the federal government makes regulations governing colleges and universities in the United States, and yet these regulations control many important aspects of the operation of these institutions. What happens after legislation affecting higher education is signed into law? How are specific provisions implemented—especially when the statute’s details are unclear? And who determines the details of the programs that a particular law has authorized? In this concise and informative book, higher education policy expert Rebecca S. Natow explores the how and why of the federal regulatory policymaking process as it pertains to higher education, financial aid, and student loan debt. Drawing on in-depth interviews with policy and higher education actors, as well as an extensive review of specific regulations and documents, Natow explains who influences higher education rulemaking and how their beliefs and surrounding contexts guide the policies they enact. She also examines the strategies and powers employed during the process, reveals how technology affects the creation of higher education rules, delves into the multifaceted implications of regulation for students and institutions, and discusses future prospects for higher education rulemaking. The first comprehensive, research-based account of this important policymaking process, Higher Education Rulemaking will serve as a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, policymakers, and higher education professionals.

Book The Control of the Campus

Download or read book The Control of the Campus written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance in U.S. higher education is discussed, based on a 1982 survey of decision making in higher education with attention to its roots, the effects of current conditions on decision-making arrangements, and a possible governance framework for the future. While both private and public education are considered, the public sector is emphasized. Governance is defined as both formal decision arrangements and informal procedures by which standards are maintained. Information was obtained from a survey of decision-making in state higher education agencies, flagship universities, four-year colleges, and two-year colleges. After discussing the mission of universities, the tradition of self-regulation in American higher education is examined, including the governing board and voluntary accreditation. Also covered are outside governance connections (the state, the federal government, and the courts) that have significantly altered the mission and governance of higher education. It is concluded that, on balance, higher education's partnership with governments on both state and national levels has generated far more benefits than it has administrative burdens. However, because external influences on academic governance should not be allowed to overwhelm internal governance structures, colleges are urged to strengthen self-regulation capacity, to take leadership roles, and to revitalize their historic governance tradition. The survey questionnaire is included, together with a list of participating institutions and agencies. (SW) reprinted from ERIC.
