A slowdown in the expansion is likely in 1984 as the United States is expecting a reduction in milk production. Also, production increases in the European Community (ec), the world's leading milk producer, may slow in 1984 as profit margins tighten. The sizable gain in milk output registered in the USSR this year is likely to moderate next year. Plentiful world supplies of milk resulted in substantial increases in manufactured dairy products during 1983. Excess supplies of these products have impacted sharply on international markets and prices have fallen. Even though dairy product output may rise somewhat in 1984 prices may stabilize as the world economy strengthens. Cow's milk production is up significantly for the 37 major dairy countries in 1983. The combined output of cow's milk in these countries is likely to approach 407 million metric tons, up about percent from a year ago. Much of the increased output is coming from the production gains in the ussr, the ec, Brazil and India. For the United States, output will likely be up a little over 2 percent for the year while both Canada and Mexico are posting a decline. The outlook for 1984 is for less than a one percent rise in world milk production, as u.s. Ouput declines. EC and USSR milk production will likely show a smaller gain next year than in 1983. Book excerpt: Globalization of the food supply has created conditions favorable for the emergence, reemergence, and spread of food-borne pathogens-compounding the challenge of anticipating, detecting, and effectively responding to food-borne threats to health. In the United States, food-borne agents affect 1 out of 6 individuals and cause approximately 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths each year. This figure likely represents just the tip of the iceberg, because it fails to account for the broad array of food-borne illnesses or for their wide-ranging repercussions for consumers, government, and the food industry-both domestically and internationally. A One Health approach to food safety may hold the promise of harnessing and integrating the expertise and resources from across the spectrum of multiple health domains including the human and veterinary medical and plant pathology communities with those of the wildlife and aquatic health and ecology communities. The IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop on December 13 and 14, 2011 that examined issues critical to the protection of the nation's food supply. The workshop explored existing knowledge and unanswered questions on the nature and extent of food-borne threats to health. Participants discussed the globalization of the U.S. food supply and the burden of illness associated with foodborne threats to health; considered the spectrum of food-borne threats as well as illustrative case studies; reviewed existing research, policies, and practices to prevent and mitigate foodborne threats; and, identified opportunities to reduce future threats to the nation's food supply through the use of a "One Health" approach to food safety. Improving Food Safety Through a One Health Approach: Workshop Summary covers the events of the workshop and explains the recommendations for future related workshops.

In light of this transformation, the analysis focuses on the supply side of the technology equation, exploring how the enabling environment and regulations related to trade and intellectual property rights stimulate Research and Development to raise productivity. The book also discusses emerging developments in modern value chains that contribute to rising productivity. Historians have often pointed to developments from the late nineteenth century, when small peasant farmers worked together through agricultural cooperatives, whose exports of butter and bacon rapidly gained a strong foothold on the British market. This book presents a radical retelling of this story, placing (largely German-speaking) landed elites—rather than the Danish peasantry—at center stage. After acquiring estates in Denmark, these elites imported and adapted new practices from outside the kingdom, thus embarking on an ambitious program of agricultural reform and sparking a chain of events that eventually led to the emergence of Denmark’s famous peasant cooperatives in 1882. A Land of Milk and Butter presents a new interpretation of the origin of these cooperatives with striking implications for developing countries today.
