Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of House of Shadows and The Phantom Tree comes a spellbinding tale of jealousy, greed, plotting and revenge—part history, part mystery—for fans of Kate Morton, Susanna Kearsley and Barbara Erskine London, 1765 Lady Isabella Gerard, a respectable member of Georgian society, orders her maid to take her new golden gown and destroy it, its shimmering beauty tainted by the actions of her brutal husband the night before. Three months later, Lord Gerard stands at the shoreline of the lake, looking down at a woman wearing the golden gown. As the body slowly rolls over to reveal her face, it’s clear this was not his intended victim… 250 Years Later… When a gown she stole from a historic home as a child is mysteriously returned to Fenella Brightwell, it begins to possess her in exactly the same way that it did as a girl. Soon the fragile new life Fen has created for herself away from her abusive ex-husband is threatened at its foundations by the gown’s power over her until she can't tell what is real and what is imaginary. As Fen uncovers more about the gown and Isabella’s story, she begins to see the parallels with her own life. When each piece of history is revealed, the gown—and its past—seems to possess her more and more, culminating in a dramatic revelation set to destroy her sanity.

Book Teaching Language to a Boy Born Deaf

Download or read book Teaching Language to a Boy Born Deaf written by John Wallis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an edition of a previously unpublished notebook used by the seventeenth-century polymath John Wallis to teach language to the "deaf mute" Alexander Popham. Under the terms of the law Popham would not have been able to inherit his family title and property if he had remained unable to speak. This is one of the most famous cases in the history of deaf education. The notebook, which has recently come to light in the Popham family mansion, provides fascinating insights into the details of the instruction. It is a rare example of a manual tailor-made for the instruction of a known individual and its author is one of the foremost scientists of the period. If it had not been lost the work would have been a key document in the dispute between John Wallis and William Holder, both distinguished fellows of the Royal Society, on whose method had been successful in teaching Popham to speak. The Popham Notebook provides essential evidence towards the resolution of a debate that has been widely discussed ever since. David Cram and Jaap Maat place the work in its personal, social, and scientific contexts. They include a range of additional contemporary texts and provide a clear text with helpful annotations. The edition provides the means for a thorough reassessment of the work's contemporary value. Their introduction also includes a discussion of the theoretical issues underpinning the teaching of language to the deaf.

Book excerpt: “There is much to enjoy in this sumptuous novel.”—Sunday Mirror “My name is Mary Seymour and I am the daughter of one queen and the niece of another.” Browsing an antiques shop in Wiltshire, Alison Bannister stumbles across a delicate old portrait—identified as the doomed Tudor queen, Anne Boleyn. Except Alison knows better. The subject is Mary Seymour, the daughter of Katherine Parr, who was taken to Wolf Hall in 1557 and presumed dead after going missing as a child. And Alison knows this because she, too, lived at Wolf Hall and knew Mary...more than four hundred years ago. The painting of Mary is more than just a beautiful object for Alison—it holds the key to her past life, the unlocking of the mystery surrounding Mary’s disappearance and how Alison can get back to her own time. To when she and Mary were childhood enemies yet shared a pact that now, finally, must be fulfilled, no matter the cost. Bestselling author of House of Shadows Nicola Cornick offers a provocative alternate history of rivals, secrets and danger, set in a time when a woman’s destiny was determined by the politics of men and luck of birth. A spellbinding tale for fans of Kate Morton, Philippa Gregory and Barbara Erskine.

Book The Life and Achievements of Sir John Popham 1531 1607

Download or read book The Life and Achievements of Sir John Popham 1531 1607 written by Douglas Walthew Rice and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of a pillar of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean state. A devoted servant of the Queen, Popham played a prominent part as her Attorney-General and Lord Chief Justice in the famous trials of Essex and Ralegh. He condemned to death the Gunpowder Plotters, and acquired a reputation as a severe judge. Enterprising and practical, he promoted attempts to settle Englishmen in Ireland and to drain the Fens of Cambridgeshire. Popham's final achievement was to establish the Virginia Company and send out an expedition that set afoot the first English colony in New England. Sir John was not only important but also notorious, becoming a legendary bogeyman in popular imagination. Accounts written hitherto have focused on that aspect, but this book aims to give a balanced account, giving credit to Popham as a visionary statesman and creative entrepreneur at the very center of English government. This book is thoroughly illustrated.
