Firstly, artists are constantly in dialogue with their peers, dealers, critics, and audiences about their creative activities and these interactions impact on the work they produce. Secondly, artists' conceptualisations of what artistic practice encompasses are always shaped by wider social discourses. These discourses, however, and their manifestation in the language of everyday life are subject to continual change, and potentially reshape the way that artists conceptualise their practices. Using a 235,000-word diachronic corpus developed from artists' interviews and statements, this Element investigates shifts in artists' use of language to conceptualise their art practice from 1950 to 2019. It then compares these shifts to see if they align with changes in the wider English lexicon and whether there might be a relationship between everyday language change and the aesthetic and conceptual developments that take place in the art world.

This, the artist's first monograph, documents her first three solo exhibitions, staged in 2016-17 at The International 3, Salford, the Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool, and Touchstones Rochdale. Featuring a foreword by Paulette Terry Brien, co-founder and co-director of The International 3, Salford, UK, and an essay and an interview by Charlotte Keenan McDonald, Curator of British Art at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, this publication has been beautifully designed by Textbook Studio and published by Anomie in a first edition of 500 copies. Paintings, both contemporary and spanning the history of art, are Giovanelli's primary subjects within her own paintings. Picking out sections or details from existing works - some well-known but mostly lesser-known - she reworks and represents them, focussing on aspects that attract her eye and critical attention. These might be unusual or odd formal elements - a neckline or a detail on an item of clothing - or can equally be things that are extraneous to the original, such as how candlelight might fall on it, or how it might appear during restoration work by a conservator. Considering the position of the viewer as much as the painter, Giovanelli explores the history of painting as object, the context of its display and reception, and the very mechanics of painting itself to investigate languages of painting both past and present, resulting in works that are cryptic, other-worldly and strangely enchanting. Louise Giovanelli graduated in BA (Hons) Fine Art (Painting) from Manchester School of Art in 2015. Her previous group exhibitions include: 'BEEP', Wales' international painting prize; 'Institution / Outstitution' at The International 3; 'Pleasure Islands' at Art Work Atelier, Salford; 'The Painted World' Saatchi Art Showdown Final, Los Angeles; and 'Ones to Watch', Galerie Sarow, Pforzheim, Germany. In 2016 Giovanelli had her first solo exhibition, 'Prima Donna' at The International 3, Salford, followed by 'From Here to Here' at Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool, 'Slow to Respond' at Touchstones Rochdale, and in 2017 a solo exhibition at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery. Giovanelli has been the recipient of a number of prizes including The Leonard James Fine Art Prize, The Manchester Academy of Fine Art Award, and The Ken Billany Painting Prize. In 2015 she was awarded second place in the Saatchi Art Showdown and in 2017 she will undertake a residency at Griffin Gallery, London. Her work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, Canada, China, Germany, Slovakia and Italy.

Book excerpt: The last decades have seen a revival of fragmentation in British and American works of fiction that deny linearity, coherence and continuity in favour of disruption, gaps and fissures. Authors such as Ali Smith, David Mitchell and David Shields have sought new ways of representing our global, media-saturated contemporary experience which differ from modernist and postmodernist experimentations from which the writers nevertheless draw inspiration. This volume aims to investigate some of the most important contributions to fragmentary literature from British and American writers since the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on texts released in the twenty-first century. The chapters within examine whether contemporary forms of literary fragmentation constitute a return to the modernist episteme or the fragmented literature of exhaustion of the 1960s, mark a continuity with postmodernist aesthetics or signal a deviation from past models and an attempt to reflect today’s accelerated culture of social media and over-communication. Contributors theorise and classify literary fragments, examine the relationship between fragmentation and the Zeitgeist (influenced by globalisation, media saturation and social networks), analyse the mechanics of multimodal and multimedial fictions, and consider the capacity of literary fragmentation to represent personal or collective trauma and to address ethical concerns. They also investigate the ways in which the architecture of the printed book is destabilised and how aesthetic processes involving fragmentation, bricolage and/or collage raise ontological, ethical and epistemological questions about the globalised contemporary world we live in and its relation to the self and the other. Besides the aforementioned authors, the volume makes reference to the works of J. G. Ballard, Julian Barnes, Mark Z. An independent art commissioning agency based in London, it has operated since 1985 and is responsible for producing some of the most striking ephemeral and site-specific artworks of the last decades, from Rachel Whiteread’s House to Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgreave. Artangel’s existence spans three decades, which now form a coherent whole in terms of both art historical and political periodisation. It was launched as a reaction to the cuts in funding for the visual arts introduced by the Thatcher government in 1979 and has since adapted in a distinctive way to changing cultural policies. Its mixed economic model, the recourse to public, private and corporate funds, is the result of the more general hybridisation of funding encouraged by successive governments since the 1980s and offers a contemporary case study on broader questions concerning the specificities of British art patronage. This book aims to demonstrate that the singular way its directors have responded to the vagaries of public funding and harnessed new national attitudes to philanthropy has created a sustainable independent model, but also that it has been reflected more formally, in their approach to site. The locational art produced by the agency has indeed mirrored new distinctions between public and private spaces, it has reflected the social and economic changes the country has gone through and accompanied the new cultural geographies shaping London and the United Kingdom. Looking into whether their funding model might have had a formal incidence on the art they helped produce and on its relation to notions of publicness and privacy, the study of Artangel gives a fresh insight into new trends in British site-specific art.
