Book The Construction Products Directive

Download or read book The Construction Products Directive written by Adam A. Pinney and published by Authorhouse UK. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compliance with the EU's Construction Products Directive is a reality for construction product manufacturers, as harmonised European Standards and European Technical Approval Guidelines come into full effect. Purchasers, specifiers and regulatory authorities expect to see products bearing the CE marking symbol and, in most European countries, marking is already compulsory. Many manufacturers are unclear about their obligations as regards this directive and need to be confident that they are receiving correct and unbiased advice about whether they need to obtain CE marking and if so, what they must do. This book offers a timely and thorough explanation of the directive and its application through harmonised European Standards and European Technical Approvals (ETAs). It leads the reader through the history and background of the CPD, explaining many of the fundamental principles and provisions, and then provides an in-depth explanation of all aspects of complying with the directive through its standards and ETAs, and the process of obtaining and using the CE marking. It goes on to look at other, related issues, such as where a product comes under more than one EU directive, what the manufacturer may expect once he has obtained the CE marking and is trying to sell his product throughout the European Union, and what is likely to happen in terms of market surveillance. The book presents each subject area logically and thoroughly and in a similar order as manufacturers will encounter them. However, some readers may prefer to concentrate only on those subjects which particularly interest them at any one time.

Book CE Marking Product Standards and World Trade

Download or read book CE Marking Product Standards and World Trade written by David Hanson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CE Marking, the European system of mandatory product safety standards, has created major obstacles for US exporters to the European Union (EU). CE Marking, Product Standards and World Trade is one of the first books to analyze the nature and dynamics of this major non-tariff trade barrier. David Hanson looks at the patterns of EU decision-making through a functional comparative analysis with the US, and in the context of the institutional alliances and rivalries that shape outcomes. An increasingly important but little understood issue, CE Marking is also an example of a growing problem in international commerce - the impact of inconsistent domestic product requirements on international trade. The author examines the way in which the EU has implemented the CE Marking system, its impact on US exporters, the dynamic of US - EU trade and negotiations, and the political and administrative arrangements that support them. This comprehensive study will be of great interest to students and scholars of industrial economics and international business. Business people and policymakers will also find much of interest in this timely volume.

Book Constructing a European Market

Download or read book Constructing a European Market written by Michelle Egan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to tackle the trade impeding effects of divergent standards and regulations are at the core of European economic relations. This volume draws on literature from several disciplines to develop a comprehensive account of the regulatory strategies and institutional arrangements adopted by the EU in promoting the single market in goods. It provides a historical overview and detailed cases studies of the various policy initiatives that have altered the boundaries between the public and private sector in fostering market integration. Tackling interstate barriers to trade has relied heavily on European law to shape the framework of relations between states, and trade liberalization has been facilitated by legal rulings resolving territorial conflicts over regulatory jurisdiction and authority. The European Court of Justice has actively shaped markets, acting as a 'free trade umpire' in balancing the goals of market liberalization and market regulation while fostering market compliance. Although markets are absolutely dependent on public authority, the institutional innovation of the EU has been to use the private sector in an ancillary role to the state. By delegating responsibility to set standards for market access, the EU has chosen to draw on the resources of private actors, resulting in a system of governance that is a distinctive, hybrid model of regulation composed of state and non-state actors. Though the "outsourcing" of public sector regulatory activity was expected to be more effective than the process of regulatory harmonization, progress has been difficult. The current deficit in setting standards for European-wide market access raises concerns about the efficiency and effectiveness of such a regulatory regime. Egan provides a detailed evaluation of that process, highlighting regulatory gaps in the single market and the need to focus not only on the process of market integration, but also its outcome and impact on European business. Comparisons with American efforts to create a national market are made throughout to demonstrate the difficulties of constructing and maintaining a single market. American and European efforts to devise a uniform market for commerce and trade have involved both public and private authorities, though with different degrees of coordination and centralization, as many of the strategies undertaken by the EU echo earlier American market-building efforts.
