Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional and Parliamentary History of Ireland Till the Union I purpose in this book to give a general view of the leading facts and characteristics of Irish Constitutional and Parliamentary History before the passing of the Act of Union. I have endeavoured to present, in a comparatively small compassy such a description of the Irish Parliament and the working of governing institutions in Ireland as will place within easy reach and in handy form information of the salient features of the rise and progress of the Irish Constitution, just as information of the salient features of the rise and progress of the British Constitution, of which the Irish Constition was first a counterpart and subsequently an inversion is within easy reach and in handy form. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional and Parliamentary History of Ireland Till the Union Irish Parliamentary and Constitutional history, speaking, as a political leader, not as an historical student. His statement, however, deals with facts and not with theories, and his description of the history, constitution, and powers of the Irish Parliament, in his speech at the Home Rule Conference in 1 873 is in remarkable accord with his description of the history, constitution, and powers of that Parliament, when speaking, not as an advocate of the restoration of Parliamentary institutions in Ireland, but as the leading Opponent of Mr. O'connell, in 1843, in the debate on Repeal of the Union in the Corporation of Dublin. I examined both speeches very carefully, and directed Mr. Butt's attention to their absolute agree ment in exposition of the history of the Irish Parliaments, which he acknowledged with gratification, stating that Mr. O'connell had said openly in the course of debate that Ireland would, in the future - Mr. Butt was then only in his thirtieth year - have in Mr. Butt a defender of Irish National rights, while he said to him in private that he would sooner or later be a great leader of the Irish Nation. Mr. Butt's outline of the history of the Irish Parliaments, which is unaffected by his political position in 1843 as an opponent of the Repeal of the Union, and in 1873 as an expounder of Home Rule, may be safely accepted as accurate and as an introduction to this work. Book The Irish Parliament in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book The Irish Parliament in the Eighteenth Century written by David Hayton and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to mark the two hundreth anniversary of the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland, which took effect on 1 January 1801, this collection of essays explores the history of the independent Irish parliament which the Act of Union extinguished; a subject of interest not just to students of Irish history, but also in its European context as an unusually successful example of a provincial representative institution in a composite monarchy. Traditionally, Irish historians have been interested in the history of the Dublin parliament as an arena for high-political conflict or as a forum for the development and expression of Anglo-Irish patriot ideology. By contrast, this volume looks at parliament as an institution, the role of the house of commons in the collection an expenditure of public money, and the recording of proceedings and debates.

Book Toleration and State Institutions

Download or read book Toleration and State Institutions written by Karen Stanbridge and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toleration and State Institutions explores the rise of more charitable British policy toward Catholics in Ireland and in Quebec during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Applying a historical institutionalist approach, Karen Stanbridge demonstrates that "Catholic relief" arose more gradually, and encountered less opposition, than is generally maintained. Her careful analysis shows that the growth of toleration among political lites, and the concerns of administrators wishing to secure the allegiance of Catholic subjects, were only two of many factors leading to the development of policy kinder to Catholics. Toleration and State Institutions sheds new light on the official treatment (and mistreatment) of minorities at home during the height of British expansion abroad, offering a fascinating example of the divisions and rapprochements that characterize the relationship between state and society.
