Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter Modern Atomic and Electron Theories It would also be out of place, since A. Sommerfeld has recently published a book, "Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines," translated by H. L. Brose (Methuen Co. & Ltd.), which deals comprehensively, yet simply, with the recent advances in the physical atomic theory. These essays are for those who have not time to. study the larger work of Sommerfeld. M. Born Frankfurt A.M., 20th April, 1920 Preface To The Second Edition The form of these essays precludes any extensive alterations. I have therefore had to confine myself to incorporating the most important of the recent advances, particularly Aston's work on isotopy in ordinary elements, Franck's spectroscopic determination of the electron-affinities of halogen atoms, and Knipping's measurements of the ionisation-energies of the hydrogen halides. For the rest I have only made minor alterations and additions to the references. Dr. R. Minkowski has kindly assisted me in reading the proofs. Book The Electron Theory of Matter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Electron Theory of Matter Classic Reprint written by Owen Willans Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electron Theory of Matter His book is based on a course of lectures which I have delivered to graduate students at Princeton University during the last few years. My aim has been to exhibit the extent to which the fundamental facts of physical science may be coordinated by means of the conception of the electron and the laws of electrodynamics. In developing the subject I have started from the most elementary beginnings, and I have therefore found it necessary to include much matter which is to be found in any ordinary text-book of the theory of electricity and magnetism. It is hoped that the lack of conciseness thereby involved may be more than atoned for by the wider circle to which the book may appeal. The course of lectures at Princeton on which the book is founded proved useful as an introduction to the methods of modern mathematical physics in addition to forming a presentation of the results of recent physical discovery. The broad scope of the subject makes it imperative that a good deal of selection should be exercised as to the nature and treatment of the topics considered. In determining these, consideration has been given to importance, interest, and instructiveness, roughly in the order named. The necessary incompleteness is remedied to some extent by references to scientific papers and to other works. These references are intended to supplement the discussion in the text rather than to exhibit the historical development of the subject. Thus many important papers are not referred to. I have tried, however, to be as accurate as possible in any statements which deal specifically with historical matters. Book The Corpuscular Theory of Matter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Corpuscular Theory of Matter Classic Reprint written by J. J. Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corpuscular Theory of Matter In Chapter VII. I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter The lectures which form the body of this book were delivered at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in the month of February, 1913, for The Norman W. Harris Lectures of this year. The fact that they were actual lec tures accounts for the form in which the text is given; and the further fact that the audi ence for whom they were prepared was com posed, for a large part, of people unfamiliar with both the facts and the methods of science must be accepted as the justification for the treatment of the subject. Book Foundations of the Atomic Theory

Download or read book Foundations of the Atomic Theory written by John Dalton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of the Atomic Theory: Comprising Papers and Extracts N a former paper which I submitted to this Society, On the constitution of mixed gases, I adopted such proportions of the simple elastic fluids to constitute the atmosphere as were then current, not intending to warrant the accuracy of them all, as stated in the said paper; my principal object in that essay was, to point out the manner in which mixed elastic fluids exist together, and to insist upon what I think a very important and fundamental position in the doctrine of such fluids namely, that the elastic or repulsive power of each particle is confined to those of its own kind; and con sequently the force of such fluid, retained in a given vessel, or gravifiting, is the same in a separate as in a mixed state, depending upon its proper density and temperature. This principle accords with all experience, and I have no doubt will soon be perceived and acknow ledged by chemists and philosophers in general; and its application will elucidate a variety of facts, which are otherwise involved in obscurity. From the Memoirs of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, Second Series, Volume I., 1805, pp. 244-258. In this paper there is announced the first example of the law of multiple proportions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universe and the Atom: The Ether Constitution, Creation and Structure of Atoms, Gravitation, and Electricity, Kinetically Explained The object of the present work is to furnish an explanation of the physical Universe and the Atom on simple mechanical principles. In connection with other work, the writer devoted several years to a study of the wave theory of light and its application to a solution of the great problems of the structure of the ether of space, the kinetic creation of matter, the birth, life and death of suns and worlds, and the forces operating to maintain the cycles of the Universe. As this study progressed from well-trodden paths into new fields, the results reached led to such astounding conclusions, that he could not do otherwise than press the investigations to the developments herein presented. Book The Theory of Spectra and Atomic Constitution

Download or read book The Theory of Spectra and Atomic Constitution written by Niels Bohr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Spectra and Atomic Constitution: Three Essays The three essays which here appear in English all deal with the application of the quantum theory to problems of atomic structure, and refer to the different stages in the development of this theory. The first essay "On the spectrum of hydrogen" is a translation of a Danish address given before the Physical Society of Copenhagen on the 20th of December 1913, and printed in Fysisk Tidsskrift, XII. p. 97, 1914. Although this address was delivered at a time when the formal development of the quantum theory was only at its beginning, the reader will find the general trend of thought very similar to that expressed in the later addresses, which form the other two essays. As emphasized at several points the theory does not attempt an "explanation" in the usual sense of this word, but only the establishment of a connection between facts which in the present state of science are unexplained, that is to say the usual physical conceptions do not offer sufficient basis for a detailed description. The second essay "On the series spectra of the elements" is a translation of a German address given before the Physical Society of Berlin on the 27th of April 1920, and printed in Zeitschrift für Physik, VI. p. 423, 1920. This address falls into two main parts. The considerations in the first part are closely related to the contents of the first essay; especially no use is made of the new formal conceptions established through the later development of the quantum theory. The second part contains a survey of the results reached by this development. An attempt is made to elucidate the problems by means of a general principle which postulates a formal correspondence between the fundamentally different conceptions of the classical electrodynamics and those of the quantum theory.
