Download or read book Gadget Man written by Ron Goulart and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Southern California was in serious trouble. The casually repressive rule of the junta was threatened, not only by the growing band of guerrillas in the south, but also by the sudden, inexplicable outbreak of riots in the Republic's wealthiest suburbs. Then word reached the Social Wing of the Police Corps that the daughter of the guerrillas' leader had information about the cause of the riots, and Sergeant James Xavier Hecker was sent to investigate. Hecker was an unlikely policeman: not only did he lack any overwhelming personal ambition, but he also retained a vestigial faith in the good will of the men and women around him. And his odyssey through the rubble of our consumption-oriented, gadget-filled, anything-for-kicks society-by turns surprising, appalling, and devilishly funny-makes an unusually entertaining and perceptive novel.

Book Holding Out

Book excerpt: In a love story that goes to the very heart of male-female relations, Anne O. Faulk updates for the nineties the tale of Lysistrata -- who persuaded the women of Athens to withhold sex from their husbands to end a war. Not since Erica Jong's Fear of Flying has a novel been as stunningly sexy as it is smart. Like millions of American women, Lauren Fontaine, thirty-six-year-old Atlanta financial wizard and single mother, was outraged when the wife of a top government leader committed suicide after enduring years of spousal abuse. Worse, the abuser stayed in office, no blame, no shame. But it was Lauren's brilliant idea to stage a protest that would hit men where they live: no sex. Nada, zip -- until justice was done. A majority of women across America agreed. Then all hell broke loose. The male power structure -- and Lauren's new boyfriend -- are miserable about women holding out. Now someone is using dirty tricks, underhanded tactics, and outright terror to stop Lauren and her movement. The eye-popping results make for the wisest, funniest, and most provocative book you'll read this year. Holding Out is a call to arms you won't soon forget.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saivism is one of the pervasive expressions of Indian Religious Culture stretching to the dim past of pre-history and surviving as a living force in the thought and life of millions of Hindus especially in Southern India and Northern Ceylon. The present work is scholarly reconstruction of Saivism in its characteristic and classical from as Saiva Siddhanta, focusing mainly on the philosophical doctrine and presenting a conceptual analysis of its formative notions, problems and methods. Anteceding the rise of the great systems of Vedanta including that of Sankara, Saiva Siddhanta in its fully systematised form as Mystical Theology in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries represents a constructive reaction to the theological, ethical and aesthetic aspects of Vedanta as a whole. A patient study of this much neglected phase of religo-philosophical development of India should prove useful for a more balanced understanding of Indian religiosity, providing a corrective to the view entertained not without justification that Indian religious thought does not affirms the values of freedom, love and personality. Book Networks

  • Author : Peter Whittle

  • ISBN : 1139463136
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Networks written by Peter Whittle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Point-to-point vs. hub-and-spoke. Questions of network design are real and involve many billions of dollars. Yet little is known about optimising design - nearly all work concerns optimising flow assuming a given design. This foundational book, first published in 2007, tackles optimisation of network structure itself, deriving comprehensible and realistic design principles. With fixed material cost rates, a natural class of models implies the optimality of direct source-destination connections, but considerations of variable load and environmental intrusion then enforce trunking in the optimal design, producing an arterial or hierarchical net. Its determination requires a continuum formulation, which can however be simplified once a discrete structure begins to emerge. Connections are made with the masterly work of Bendsøe and Sigmund on optimal mechanical structures and also with neural, processing and communication networks, including those of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Technical appendices are provided on random graphs and polymer models and on the Klimov index.

Book Billiards at the Hotel Dobray

Download or read book Billiards at the Hotel Dobray written by Dušan Šarotar and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the northern Slovenian city of Murska, Sobota stands the renowned Hotel Dobray, once the gathering place of townspeople of all nationalities and social strata who lived in this typical town on the fringe of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It had always been home to numerous ethnically and culturally mixed communities that gave it the charm and melos of Central-European identity. But now, in the thick of World War II, the town is occupied by the Hungarian army. Franz Schwartz's wife, Ellsie has been preparing their son Isaac, a gifted violinist, for his first solo concert, which is to take place at Hotel Dobray. Isaac is to perform on his bar mitzvah and 13th birthday on April 26, 1944. When the German army marches into town and forces all Jews to display yellow stars on their clothes, Ellsie advises her husband that the family should flee the town and escape to Switzerland. Schwartz promises her he will obtain forged documents, but not before Isaac performs his concert at the hotel. A year later, in March 1945, Schwartz returns, on foot, from the concentration camp as one of the few survivors.

Download or read book The Fight for Space written by Roberto Ontiveros and published by Stephen F. Austin University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his debut collection, The Fight for Space, Roberto Ontiveros explores the modes of art and obsession with eleven stories that run from fabulist comedy to surrealist noir. The tales--focusing on the inner lives of adult caregivers, delivery drivers, and painters--trace how the ubiquity of media (the world of sitcoms, talk radio, and superhero comics) comes to flood the working class with a dream-like dread. In this book, a budding con artist tries to sell a house that does not belong to her, an anti-social memoirist pens the fates of his friends, and a comic book-obsessed warehouse employee follows a man who wears a gas mask. Atmospheric and erotic, the stories in The Fight for Space, recall the literary mysteries of James M. Cain by way of Twin Peaks.

Book John Ruskin

  • Author : Tim Hilton
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2000-01-06

  • Pages : 688 pages

Download or read book John Ruskin written by Tim Hilton and published by . This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ruskin, one of the greatest writers and thinkers of the nineteenth century, was also one of the most prolific. Not only did he publish some 250 works, but he also wrote lectures, diaries, and thousands of letters that have not been published. This book--the second and final volume of Tim Hilton's acclaimed biography of Ruskin, which is published on the centenary of Ruskin's death--draws on the original source material to give a moving account of the life of this brilliant and creative man. The book begins in 1859, when Ruskin, a famous author with a disastrous marriage behind him, is living with his parents, writing and traveling, and tutoring--among other pupils--Rose La Touche, a girl of ten, with whom he slowly falls in love. Hilton recounts how this relationship developed into one of the saddest love affairs of literary history, ending in tragedy in 1875. Thereafter, says Hilton, Ruskin's life was punctuated by bouts of insanity and despair that culminated in total breakdown for the last ten years of his life. During these years, however, his intellect and imagination reached new heights, as he produced Praeterita and most of Fors Clavigera, the series of monthly letters to British workers. Hilton's magisterial narrative follows Ruskin through this period and shows that he was the most eloquent and radical of all the great Victorian writers.

Book The Double Exodus Theory

Download or read book The Double Exodus Theory written by Steve Brock and published by Turnkey Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Exodus is not a myth! For centuries people have debated whether the Bible's book of Exodus was a historical account of Moses' journey from Egypt, or if the story was a legend or allegorical in nature. In fact, none of these are correct. The set of stories that make up the Exodus account in the Bible are not unfounded or based on false notions. The Exodus is not a legend in the strictest definition of the word. A legend is an account based on potentially historical events, but events that are not verifiable. The Exodus is not a legend because much of the narrative is verifiable. Why then do the vast majority of Biblical scholars and Egyptologists regard the Exodus as being predominantly, if not entirely, manufactured? Because there is no single event in all of Egyptian history that matches with all of the events depicted in the Exodus narrative, which appears to be the story of a singular event. This is the problem with the standard analysis of the Exodus; scholars try to fit the story to a single event from a single author. But there were at least four primary authors work which was originally separate material written hundreds of years apart and the Exodus of people from Egypt to Canaan happened not once, but twice. In a process described by the Documentary Hypothesis, the work of these authors and the two Exodus events were magnificently and intricately combined into a single work looking like a single event that was the foundation of the Israelite religion: the Double Exodus Theory.
