Book excerpt: The Consecrated Way to Christian Perfection, written by A. T. Jones, is an exposition of the work of Christ as our High Priest as relating to the perfection of Christian character. A. T. Jones and E. J. Waggoner presented this message to the 1888 Minneapolis General Conference Session of Seventh-day Adventists. Their message met resistance from leaders such as G. I. Butler, Uriah Smith and others. The session discussed crucial theological issues such as the meaning of "righteousness by faith," and the nature of the Godhead, and the relationship between law and grace. Ellen White supported Waggoner's Christ centered view on justification by faith and their refutation of Arianism, and later wrote that she had been teaching for "forty-five years" this same message as Jones and Waggoner presented at that session.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1905, with 129 pages, by Pacific Press Publishing Company, Mountain View, California. Its emphasis is on the Scriptures' presentation of the three offices of Christ as prophet, priest, and king."Of Him as prophet it was written in the days of Moses: 'I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak unto them all that I shall command Him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto My words which He shall speak in My name, I will require it of him.' Deut. 18:18,19. And this thought was continued in the succeeding scriptures until His coming. "Of Him as priest it was written in the days of David: 'Yet have I set ['anointed, ' margin] My King upon My holy hill of Zion.' Ps. 2:6. And this thought, likewise, was continued in all the scriptures afterward unto His coming, after His coming, and unto the end of the Book. "Thus the Scriptures abundantly present Him in the three offices of prophet, priest, and king. {4}"This threefold truth is generally recognized by all who have acquaintance with the Scriptures, but above this there is the truth which seems to be not so well known-that He is not all three of these at the same time. The three offices are successive. He is prophet first, then after that He is priest, and after that He is king. . . ."Not only are His three offices of prophet, priest, and king successive, but they are successive for a purpose. And they are successive for a purpose in the exact order of the succession as given-prophet, {8} priest, and king. His office as prophet was preparatory and essential to His office as priest; and His offices of prophet and priest, in order, are preparatory to His office as king. "And to us the consideration of Him in these offices in their order is essential. "We must consider Him in His office as prophet, not only in order that we may be taught by Him who spake as never man spake, but also that we shall be able properly to consider Him in His office as priest. "And we must consider Him in His office as priest, not only that we may have the infinite benefit of His priesthood, but also that we shall be prepared for what we are to be. For it is written: 'They shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.' Rev. 20:6. "And having considered Him in His office of prophet as preparatory to our properly considering Him in His office as priest, it is essential that we consider Him in His office as priest in order that we shall be able to consider Him in His office as king; that is, in order that we shall be with Him there and reign with Him there. For even of us it is written: 'The saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever, ' and 'they shall reign forever and ever.' Dan. 7:18; Rev. 22:5. "His priesthood being the present office and work of Christ, this having been His office and work ever since His ascension to heaven, Christ in His priesthood is the all-important study for all Christians, as well as for all other people." Book The Way of Salvation and of Perfection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS volume contains the quintessence of the science of the saints. It gives a correct idea of the spirit, of the heart, and of the talent of Saint Alphonsus: one might say that in it his whole soul is poured out. The entire work is divided into three parts. In the first, we resume, under another form, the considerations on the eternal truths or the Last Things, treated at greater length in the preceding volume. The second part traces and paves the way that leads to divine love, or to sanctity and true happiness, and inspires us at the same time with the desire, the zeal, and the courage to undertake everything to reach this end. The third part transports us to the summit of the holy mountain, or Christian perfection, shows us in detail the mysteries of the interior life, and enables us to breathe its sweetest perfume.

Book The Call to Christian Perfection

Download or read book The Call to Christian Perfection written by Samuel Chadwick and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Christian Perfection? Why are so many professing Christians afraid of the doctrine? Why is the idea so vehemently resisted? These answers and more are found in Samuel Chadwick's "The Call to Christian Perfection." "Christian Perfection," says Chadwick, "is not infallibility." And neither is it encompassed in the dissolution of our physical existence. Is moral perfection possible in this life? Chadwick's presentation to the affirmative is contained in these pages. Based on John Wesley's teachings on entire sanctification, "The Call to Christian Perfection" examines the Biblical basis of the doctrine. The reality of entire sanctification is only realized through crises in which the soul cries out to be conformed to the image of Christ, and the experience is as much a crises as conversion itself. Without holiness, says the Scriptures, "no man shall see the Lord." This being so, it is vitally important that we rightly and Biblically define "holiness." To the shame of the professing church, much of it is content in their "less than perfect" state, actually defending their spots and wrinkles, casting the blame for their worldly imperfection upon their domineering flesh, or even on God Himself. "It is a tragedy when 'holiness' people are not holy people."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocation to Virtue seeks to answer a perennial difficulty in the Catholic theology of marriage: how do the practice and bond of marriage lead to Christian perfection in spouses and their children? If the Second Vatican Council is correct in saying that all in the church are called to Christian perfection, we need an account of how those consecrated in the sacrament of marriage can fulfill that vocation. If the perfection of charity consists in Christ himself, then couples must imitate Christ. But how? If Christ is the poor, chaste, and obedient bridegroom of the church, then spouses achieve holiness inasmuch as they participate in Christ's own virtues: poverty, chastity, and obedience. The thesis is that the language of the evangelical virtues (poverty, chastity, and obedience), a rule of life, and robust preparation (maybe a novitiate) belongs as properly to marriage as to consecrated religious life. Both states are specifications of a common baptismal consecration to Christ himself. Lasnoski seeks to establish this fact and constructively apply this language to conjugal life. The book begins by explaining our marriage crisis and theological paradigms for speaking about Christian marriage as "relationship" or as "practice," and considers modern scholarly attempts to relate conjugal life and consecrated religious life. The book then offers a theological groundwork in Christ and the Trinity for a deeper, noncompetitive relationship between the consecrated religious life and married life. It offers an Augustinian account of the relationship between marriage and consecrated life, and develops the ecclesial connection between the states with recourse to John's Gospel, which sees Christian life in terms of "householding." The church's tradition has a dialogical relationship between the consecrated and married - a mutual sharing of both "monastic" and "domestic" language. The final chapter develops practices of Christian householding for conjugal life using the language of poverty, chastity, and obedience, a rule of life, and a kind of novitiate preparation.

Book Christ and His Righteousness

Download or read book Christ and His Righteousness written by E.J Waggoner and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellet Joseph Waggoner (1855 – 1916) was a leading Seventh-day Adventist preacher and writer. In his famous book Christ and His Righteousness, he writes, "Christ has been set forth by God as the One through whom forgiveness of sins is to be obtained; and this forgiveness consists simply in the declaration of His righteousness (which is the righteousness of God) for their remission. God, “who is rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4), and who delights in it, puts His own righteousness on the sinner who believes in Jesus, as a substitute for his sins. Surely, this is a profitable exchange for the sinner, and it is no loss to God, for He is infinite in holiness, and the supply can never be diminished." Chapters include: 1. How Shall We Consider Christ? 2. Is Christ God? 3. Is Christ a Created Being? 4. God Manifest in the Flesh 5. Important Practical Lessons 6. Christ the Lawgiver 7. The Righteousness of God 8. The Lord Our Righteousness 9. Acceptance With God 10. The Victory of Faith 11. Bond-Servants and Freemen 12. Practical Illustrations of Deliverance From Bondage

Some persons have objected that the writings of Saint Alphonsus contain many repetitions. This is true in regard to the ascetical works; but these repetitions are not useless. There is no question here of a study, a scientific work done for the sole purpose of exercising the mind. It is a food destined to give strength to the life of the soul. Each one takes for himself every day the amount that agrees with his spiritual temperament. But let us hear what the author himself says in regard to this matter: “I entreat my readers not to grow weary if in those prayers they always find petitions for the grace of perseverance and the grace of divine love. For us, these are the two graces most necessary for the attainment of eternal salvation.” He also says: “One should not find it tiresome that I repeat the texts that I have already cited several times. . . . The authors of pernicious books, who treat of obscene things, reproduce even to satiety their impure sallies in order to inflame their imprudent readers with the fire of concupiscence; and should it not be permitted to me to repeat sacred texts that are most suitable to inflame souls with divine love?” Ah, let us never grow tired of reading and meditating on what the holy bishop has had the patience to write so many times for our benefit.—ED. Includes 97 Meditations for all times of the year. 45 Pious Reflections on different points of Spirituality and Seven Treatises by a Doctor of the Church, St Alphonsus M Liguori, CSSR.

This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Alphonsus tells us a good story: “If a traveller, on his journey to his own country; were to stop and spend his all in building a palace in a land through which he ought only to pass, and neglect to provide a dwelling for himself in that country in which her was to reside his whole life, he would be thought mad. And must not the Christian be deemed mad who think only of gratifying himself in this world, through which, he has only to pass during a few days, and heeds not the danger of being miserable in the next, where he must live forever, as long as God shall be God?”This holy saint tells us: “An act of contrition and of love makes us friends of God.”He then warns: “St. Teresa said that all sins had their origin in a want of faith.” Let us consider this well and then heed his advice: “Therefore, in order to overcome our passions and temptations, we ought constantly to revivie our faith by saying: I believe the life everlasting. I believe that after this life, which will soon be ended, there is an eternal life, either full of joys, or full of pains, which will befall me, accotding to my merits or demerits.”Let us consider these six rules to become a saint and we are all called to become saints:“If, then, we truly desire to become saints, let us resolve:“1. To avoid every venial sin, however slight.2”. To detach ourselves from every earthly desire.“3. Let us not cease OUI- accustomed· exercises of prayer and mortification, however great may be the weariness and dryness we feel in them.“4. Let us meditate daily on the Passion of Jesus Christ, which inflames with divine love every heart that meditates upon it.“5. Let us resign ourselves in peace to the will of God in all things that trouble us, as Father Balthazar Alvarez said, "He that in troubles resigns himself to the divine will, runs to God as swift as by a post."“6. Let us continually beg of God the gift of his holy love.”
