Book The Conscious in Psychoanalysis

Download or read book The Conscious in Psychoanalysis written by Antonio A. Semi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we psychoanalysts, first and foremost concerned with the Unconscious, go about thinking about consciousness? And why should we be interested in the first place? The author's answer is simply this: because there is no talk regarding the unconscious if not from the standpoint of consciousness. In answering this, we are already, on the one hand, linking consciousness with language and speech, and the author elegantly shows how the figures of discourse teach us a lot about the interface between consciousness and the unconscious.

Book The Works of William Perkins Volume 8

Download or read book The Works of William Perkins Volume 8 written by William Perkins and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eighth volume includes five treatises meant to promote a good conscience before God. A Discourse of Conscience establishes a framework for understanding the importance of conscience and how it functions. The Whole Treatise of the Cases of Conscience is an extensive treatment of casuistry that treats man in his three principle conditions (by himself, in relation to God, and in relation to others). A Treatise Tending unto a Declaration whether a Man Is in the Estate of Damnation or in the Estate of Grace distinguishes between true and false professors, demonstrates how Roman Catholicism falls short of assurance, and highlights the devil’s attempts to sully the consciences of God’s people. A Case of Conscience gives full attention to the importance of personal assurance of salvation. A Grain of Mustard Seed provides consolation to weak Christians by encouraging them to recognize and grow in gratitude for the grace they have. There is much in the present volume to commend to the reader, but what clearly stands out is Perkins’s skill as a spiritual adviser.

Book Medical Assistance in Dying MAID in Canada

Download or read book Medical Assistance in Dying MAID in Canada written by Jaro Kotalik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written both for a Canadian and an international readership, provides a multidisciplinary review of the framework and performance of the Canadian Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program. In the first five years (2015-2021) of operation, this program delivered voluntary euthanasia and assistance in suicide to over 30,000 Canadian residents, presently representing a 30% annual growth. Looking back on these first five years, the 30 Canadian scholars and clinicians contributing to this volume raise important issues and attempt to answer key questions that have arisen in regards to its operation and its stated objectives. This volume strikes the most appropriate balance between the autonomy of persons who seek medical assistance, versus the interests and protection of vulnerable persons. Finally, the book makes suggestions on how the program can presently be improved. It identifies gaps in knowledge about MAID’s operational program and its impact on individuals, families and society in order to stimulate the necessary research that is essential to the evolution of a healthy and well-balanced program. As a first, comprehensive examination of medically assisted deaths in Canada, this publication will be of great value to lay, professional, academic, political audiences both domestically and internationally, especially in jurisdictions that are examining their options of permitting assisted deaths.

Book The Conscience and Self Conscious Emotions in Adolescence

Download or read book The Conscience and Self Conscious Emotions in Adolescence written by Frans Schalkwijk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of apparent moral failings in an individual are something that can be seen frequently in the media and in everyday life. One issue that is rarely addressed in public discussion about someone’s ‘lack of conscience’ is any thought as to how the conscience actually functions. In The Conscience and Self-Conscious Emotions in Adolescence, Frans Schalkwijk presents a new definition of the conscience as a psychic function in which self-conscious emotions and empathy are dominant. Schalkwijk combines current scientific research into empathy, shame and guilt as well as his rich clinical experience to create a wealth of information for clinicians working with children and adolescents. This book is a superb guide for operationalizing the diagnostics of the conscience, presenting a developmental approach to the theory and diagnostics of the conscience and integrating psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural, social, psychological and neurobiological theories. Research has shown that human behaviours are often enacted well below our potential cognitive level. In this book, a balance is found between affective and cognitive aspects of the conscience. Accessibly written and incorporating case studies and detailed notation throughout, this is a highly practical work ideal for psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and professionals working with children, adolescents and adults.
