John Oakley, M.A., In Reply to His Pamphlet "the Conscience Clause" &C., &C., &C The meaning of the Conscience Clause, we hear it said, is not clear. No one can accuse your pages of ambiguity. There, at all events, the true purport of it is not disguised. A great principle, I agree with you, is at stake, which, as you truly say, ap plies as much or as little to managing as to building to grants for the support of a school as to those for its first foundation; and it is this. The Conscience Clause, whether in its old or revised form, enacts that the managers of a church-school must exempt the children of Dis senters, if the parents desire it, from instruction in the doctrine or formularies of the Church. We need not ask Mr. Lingen, nor any one else, to explain the meaning of the Clause. Clearly, if one child may claim to be exempted from the doctrine and the formularies of the Church, so may all. Clearly, if parent A may take exception to other parts of the Catechism, so may parent B to the Apostles' Creed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conscience Clause: Its History, Terms, Effect, and Principle; A Reply to Archdeacon Denison I venture to appeal to the Opponents of the clause to give a careful consideration to the facts and arguments of this address; and to its ardent supporters to be patient of the tone of apology and expostulation into which I have been led. This was unavoidable in a condo ad clerum, and if any one is disposed to under estimate the amount and force of the feeling against it on the part of the Church, I can only point to the recent majority against the clause in the Lower House of Con vocation, which, whatever its defects or sins, does cer tainly include many of the best and ablest clergymen in the country. I am well aware that the facts are diffe rently interpreted by many able and excellent men that some of my arguments will not only not com mend the clause to some of its adversaries, but will confirm their suspicions of it. Nevertheless, I trust I have suggested grounds on which all, or nearly all, may consent to adopt some arrangement of the kind pro posed. And my object has been that alone - to advocate the acceptance, on whatever grounds and in whatever form may finally be agreed upon, of a stipulation which I believe that the State has every right to demand, and the Church every obligation and inducement to give.
