Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity in India From the Commencement of the Christian Era, Vol. 1 In publishing the present History, I do not pretend to have supplied the desideratum; for a much more extensive work would be desirable, had I leisure for the performance, and the means of incurring the res ponsibility of its publication. Neither am I entitled to the credit of entering upon the present limited under taking merely for the purpose of meeting the general wish for such a work. The duties and responsibilities of my situation are too great for me to have thought of engaging in so laborious a task, had I not been con strained by a conviction of duty to the Church of Christ. No other motive could have induced me to sit down to write history, or to persevere in it when begun for it is not without much inconvenience and many scruples that I have devoted to these volumes the time that they have required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Missions: A Letter Addressed to His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury That, then, is what I have said, and'i would explain, if possible more clearly than before, that Caste and Hindooism are, to all practical intents, convertible terms; so that nothing is done while the overthrow of Caste is left undone. Until Caste is taken by storm, something may be effected among the camp followers and those who hang upon the outskirts of the fortress, but we have made no real progress in conquering Hindooism itself. Caste is our enemy, and nothing less. What then is Caste? Caste is a social system of the most compact and consolidated kind. The men who devised it looked very deeply into human nature, and, inventing a system which should in some way satisfy sense, imagination, and conscience, have deceived men into a belief that their blood unites them eternally with God, while they have actually welded countless millions together into a solid mass which hithertomace. 5 has been impenetrable. Caste is, in fact, an idolatrous Church association, fashioned by imagination, but fashioned out of nature and blood and race and this false Church is built up as a fortress, only not impregnable, and is still cased with the iron plates of an inexorably rigid discipline, which can be pierced by nothing less than the artillery of God. And what are we doing to destroy these iron-shielded walls of Caste? To assault this terrible fortress the strongest and most terrible which ever man devised - Protestant Missions as a whole, and the Church-of England too generally, are bringing up a form of the religion of Christ which I have called an abstraction and a philosophy, because in theory and in practice it goes far to deny that our Lord commissioned His followers, while they taught the one truth, at the same time to found the one and universal Church. Protestant Missions as a whole have been an attempt to convert India by teaching the truth and giving it the Bible, without at the same time giving it the Church of Christ. In doing this they have severed things which God has joined together, and they have preached an imperfect gospel, because they have not endeavoured to embody truth in the organic life of the Catholic but single society. And with what result? With failure, I believe, at all seriously to shake the walls of Caste. The failure, too, as I believe, can be accounted for naturally, because an abstraction such as even Chris tian truth becomes when divorced from the organic life of a community, is essentially unsuited to con6 Preface. Book Christianity in India

Download or read book Christianity in India written by John William Kaye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in India: An Historical Narrative It will be observed that the subject has been treated biographically in the earlier part of the work. I believe that this mode of treatment, whilst impart ing a living interest to the narrative better calculated than anything else to enchain the attention of the reader, is at the same time the most truthful form in which the progress of Christianity in India can be represented. It is to the advance of individual minds - to the energy of individual efforts - that we owe the much or the little that has been done; and it is in the thoughts that were taking shape in the minds Of these pioneers Of the Gospel that we must trace the dawning of Christianity in the East. The first difficulties fairly overcome-the thicket cleared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book India and Christian Missions Classic Reprint

Download or read book India and Christian Missions Classic Reprint written by Edward Storrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and Christian Missions In preparing these pages for the press, I intended neither to write a large nor an elaborate book. In pleading the cause of Missions in various parts of England, I was struck with the large number of persons who felt greatly interested in the progress of Christianity in India, who knew comparatively little, in a definite form, of the country as a field for missions, yet who were quite prepared eagerly to accept of all the information that could be given them. It is for such that this volume is designed. It has been my aim, in conjunction with this leading missionary purpose, to give as much information as possible - without seriously digressing from the subject in hand - respecting the character, and the social as well as religious state of the people of India. Book The Indian Church During the Great Rebellion

Download or read book The Indian Church During the Great Rebellion written by Matthew Atmore Sherring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Church During the Great Rebellion: An Authentic Narrative of the Disasters That Befell It, Its Sufferings, and Faithfulness Unto Death of Many of Its European and Native Members It is only in modern times that the great idea of the Saviour, to send the gospel to all mankind, even to the utmost corners of the earth, is being accomplished. Previously this idea was only partially realised; and when the Church had sent the gospel to a new country, it remained satisfied for an age, and left posterity to prosecute further efforts. The thought of conveying the message of salvation to the whole family of man by one vast enterprise, and at one time, was not in reality the thought of the Church in any age prior to the age of modern missions. It may have entered the mind of many individuals as a most desirable thing; but it took no formal shape, and was embodied in no scheme. The page of ecclesiastical history, while it informs us how kingdom after kingdom in various parts of the world became Christianised, says nothing respecting any endeavour to bring the human race, in the aggregate, under the influence of the gospel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British India in Its Relation to the Decline of Hindooism, and the Progress of Christianity Arter a residence of nearly twelve years in India, exclusively devoted to the work of a Missionary, the Author was under the necessity of returning to his native land, and of leaving that sphere of la hour in which he greatly delighted. In visiting the churches of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, the vast importance, and the urgent necessities of our Eastern Empire, have constituted the great theme of his sermons and addresses; the deliverance of Hindoos from priestcraft and superstition, is still the burden of his thoughts, his prayers, and his toils; and whether, in the good providence of God, he is directed to return to his field of labour, or is obliged to occupy a different sphere at home, the claims, the welfare and the conversion of India are bound up with his mortal existence, and must ever have a warm place in his heart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conversion of India: From Pantaenus to the Present Time, A. D. 193-1893 The Reformed Churches Of Europe and America, after a critical pause for two centuries more, during which they were unconsciously preparing the Word Of God for the world-races, and were Opening up new continents and islands to its sway, entered a century ago on the third spiritual revolution - the conversion Of the East, of India and Southern Asia, to Christ. The conversion of Africa and the islands may be regarded as the work Of the missionary century on which we are just entering. So far as Africa is under Mohammedan influence, the evangel ising Of that continent is really a part of the greater prob lem Of Asia. Following up the two revolutions of the eighteen Christian centuries, the third, the conversion of India in the widest sense of that word, is the first and greatest mission to which Western Christendom is called. The fitful and mistaken attempts of the Early Church, the long neglect or cruel intolerance that succeeded these up to a century ago, have made Brahmanism, with its odi spring, and Islam apparently more powerful enemies of Christ than even the classical paganism of Hellas and Imperial Rome. Hinduism and Islam once fairly grappled with, the millions of China and Japan, Of Africa and Oceania, must follow willing captives in the triumphal train of the Christ. Download or read book Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865 Classic Reprint written by William Strickland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865 In looking at the Map of the World, there is something astonishing in the consideration that the small spots called the British Islands should contain a people whose influence is felt all over the universe, and whose empire and possessions extend into every climate and into every part of the known world. By far the most valuable of these possessions, both for wealth and population, is the peninsula of Hindostan, containing at least 150,000,000 inhabitants in its vast plains, forests, and mountains. This immense country is peopled by a number of different races and nations, as distinct in personal appearance and language as the various nations of Europe; yet throughout there is a great similarity in manners and customs induced by the influence of the Brahminieal religion, which prevails more or less over the whole continent of Hindostan. The subdivision of the nation into eastes, though under different names, prevails every where, and is every where materially the same. The caste of an individual is determined by his birth, and by birth alone; and it is this system of caste which is, as it were, the keystone of Hindoo social life.
