Download or read book The Cambridge History of Native American Literature written by Melanie Benson Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American literature has always been uniquely embattled. It is marked by divergent opinions about what constitutes authenticity, sovereignty, and even literature. It announces a culture beset by paradox: simultaneously primordial and postmodern; oral and inscribed; outmoded and novel. Its texts are a site of political struggle, shifting to meet external and internal expectations. This Cambridge History endeavors to capture and question the contested character of Indigenous texts and the way they are evaluated. It delineates significant periods of literary and cultural development in four sections: “Traces & Removals” (pre-1870s); “Assimilation and Modernity” (1879-1967); “Native American Renaissance” (post-1960s); and “Visions & Revisions” (21st century). These rubrics highlight how Native literatures have evolved alongside major transitions in federal policy toward the Indian, and via contact with broader cultural phenomena such, as the American Civil Rights movement. There is a balance between a history of canonical authors and traditions, introducing less-studied works and themes, and foregrounding critical discussions, approaches, and controversies.

Download or read book Gravity Currents written by John E. Simpson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This explanation of the nature of gravity currents (Bouyancy-driven flows in fluids) and their manifestations in the atmosphere, the oceans and the earth sciences, fills a serious gap in the literature. It will also benefit a great many workers in other scientific disciplines, who will be able to apply the principles of gravity currents to their own specialist subject. Much of the work has not previously been published, and the publishers know of no other book with a similar range of information. The author's own work in the development of a variety of laboratory experiments designed to offer an understanding of the physical processes, is made very clear to the reader, illustrating a range of phenomena which are important in areas as diverse as aircraft safety, the distribution of airborne pests, and airborne pollution. The study of oceans ranges from the Gulf Stream to river fronts in lakes and fjords, where the formation of a front is of biological importance. In a section on avalanche flows, avalanches of snow, rock, and volcanic eruptions, are also shown to be gravity currents of vital significance. Factors influencing the behaviour of gravity currents are reviewed. The topics are dealt with in numerous laboratory experiments, and only simple mathematics is included. A final chapter reviews the growing subject of numerical models of gravity currents.

Book excerpt: This riveting account is the summation of more than twenty years covering Saddam Hussein's Iraq: a major work of serious reportage and essential reading for us all. 'By far the most comprehensive and readable account to date . . . Simpson remains a reporter who cares' Sunday Times 'Well-paced and well balanced . . . The Wars Against Saddam impresses not so much by its urgency as its detachment . . . the book exhibits, not bias, but a proper perspective' Boyd Tonkin, Independent 'You can't really argue with much that John Simpson says - there is no foreign correspondent left on TV who has a fraction of his recognition and his credibility, a fact which may be unfair on the others, but happens to be true' Simon Hoggart, reviewing Simpson's devastating 'Panorama' profile of Saddam Hussein, broadcast in early November 2002
