Book Flaubert and Madame Bovary

Download or read book Flaubert and Madame Bovary written by Francis Steegmuller and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Steegmuller's beautifully executed double portrait of Madame Bovary and her maker is a remarkable and unusual biographical study, a sensitive and detailed account of how an unpromising young man turns himself into one of the world's greatest novelists. Steegmuller starts with the young Flaubert, prone to mysterious fits, hypochondriacal, at odds with and yet dependent on his bourgeois family. Then, drawing on Flaubert's voluminous correspondence, Steegmuller tracks his subject through friendships and love affairs, a trip to the Orient, nervous breakdown and tenuous recovery, and finally into the study, where a mind at once restless and jaded finds a focus in the precisely detailed reality of an imagined woman, utterly ordinary in her unhappiness, whose story was to revolutionize literature.

Book Flaubert Sand

Download or read book Flaubert Sand written by Gustave Flaubert and published by Harvill Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1862 Gustave Flaubert published Salammb , his novel of ancient Carthage. It met with a largely unenthusiastic response from the critics. One of the few who admired it was George Sand, then at the height of her popularity as a novelist and playwright, and she wrote a review championing the book. Flaubert wrote to thank her and thus began a correspondence and a friendship that were to last until Sand's death in 1876. In this correspondence, 'one of the great literary exchanges,' as Julian Barnes has called it, two writers of genius set down their thoughts on an enormous variety of subjects, from their views on the craft of fiction and on the Paris theatre to their reactions to public events such as the Franco-Prussian War and the conflict between monarchists and republicans. In their letters Flaubert and Sand created a masterpiece as compelling as any of their novels.

Book The Political Fiction of Ward Just

Download or read book The Political Fiction of Ward Just written by David Smit and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Fiction of Ward Just: Class, Theories of Representation, and Imagining a Ruling Elite uses three theoretical frameworks of representation—literary, political, and diplomatic—to demonstrate how the upper-class status of the ruling elites in Ward Just’s political fiction influences the way they govern. He illustrates how Just’s ruling elites develop a coherent “upper class” form of consciousness that limits their ability as elected officials to adequately represent the interests of all the nation’s citizens domestically—especially the poor and working class—and their ability as diplomats to adequately represent the interests of the nation as a whole internationally. In his conclusion, the author offers suggestions for ways to make our ruling elites more representative of the interests of the working class and underprivileged groups at home and more sensitive to the cultures of the countries in which they serve abroad.
