Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conflict of Christianity With Heathenism The work of which a translation is now offered to the public has been highly commended by leading reviews in Germany, and has been received with much popular favor. It has also been translated into the Danish and Swedish languages. Its author's name is familiar to scholars through his contributions to the first edition of Herzog's Encyclopaedia of Protestant Theology, as well as to the one now issuing; through his work on the Clementine Homilies and Recognitions; and through other historical and apologetic publications, one of which has been translated into English by the Rev. Charles E. Grinnell, and published under the title: "The Modern Representations of the Life of Jesus." At home Dr. Uhlhorn is known also as an eminent preacher, and as one of the most prominent of the Lutheran clergy. Several volumes of sermons have lately appeared from his pen, and also a collection of addresses on important topics of religious and social life. Gerhard Uhlhorn is the son of a shoemaker, and was born in Osnabruck, Feb. 17, 1826 About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Anti-Christianity in Their Final Conflict The chief burden of these criticisms is that the book is pessimistic in its tone. It is said by one It does not acknowledge that there are any Christian tendencies everything in our age is antichristian. By another It adopts a pessimistic theory of history. By another: It represents the world as growing worse, rather than better. A brief examination will show how baseless is all criticism of this kind. Book Between Heathenism and Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Between Heathenism and Christianity Classic Reprint written by Charles William Super and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Between Heathenism and Christianity In the following pages I have attempted to put before my readers a solution of some of the problems to which this question gives rise. No one will deny that Seneca stood on the threshold of Christianity, while in the opinion of many he had already passed within; yet all will admit that, at best, he fell far short of the standard Christianity sets up for its converts. Plutarch is not claimed by Christians, but he exemplifies many of their virtues, and commends many of the precepts they endeavored to put in practice. These two men best represent the strong and the weak points of characters formed under the stimulus of earnest effort to lead upright lives and to discharge faithfully their duties to themselves, their fellow men, and the higher power that controlled their destinies. I have selected a typical work from the writings of both as a nucleus around which to group such reflections and facts as seem best fitted to illustrate the environment in which they lived and the intellectual inheritance to which they had fallen heir, while I have allowed each to speak for himself on one of the profoundest problems that has ever engaged the serious attention of man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Conflicts of Christianity We believe that few among those who profess and call themselves Christians have a clear idea of the difficulties to which our faith was subjected in the earliest ages of its existence, or the severity of the conflict through which it was obliged to pass. And yet it was a contest sanctified to us by deeds of heroic daring such as elsewhere the world has never seen. It was no sudden outbreak, exhausting itself in one burst of enthusiasm, but a power of endurance exhibited through long centuries, until at last the victory was won, and the despised faith was throned in the high places of the earth. It was a warfare, too, not against one form of evil alone, but against all that the world could summon to its aid, in the pride of intellect or the opposition of a perverted nature.
