Book Understanding Early Modern Primary Sources

Download or read book Understanding Early Modern Primary Sources written by Laura Sangha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Early Modern Primary Sources is an introduction to the rich treasury of source material available to students of early modern history. During this period, political development, economic and social change, rising literacy levels, and the success of the printing press, ensured that the State, the Church and the people generated texts and objects on an unprecedented scale. This book introduces students to the sources that survived to become indispensable primary material studied by historians. After a wide-ranging introductory essay, part I of the book, ‘Sources’, takes the reader through seven key categories of primary material, including governmental, ecclesiastical and legal records, diaries and literary works, print, and visual and material sources. Each chapter addresses how different types of material were produced, whilst also pointing readers towards the most important and accessible physical and digital source collections. Part II, ‘Histories’, takes a thematic approach. Each chapter in this section explores the sources that are used to address major early modern themes, including political and popular cultures, the economy, science, religion, gender, warfare, and global exploration. This collection of essays by leading historians in their respective fields showcases how practitioners research the early modern period, and is an invaluable resource for any student embarking on their studies of the early modern period.

Book The Voices of Women in Witchcraft Trials

Download or read book The Voices of Women in Witchcraft Trials written by Liv Helene Willumsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women come to the fore in witchcraft trials as accused persons or as witnesses, and this book is a study of women’s voices in these trials in eight countries around the North Sea: Spanish Netherlands, Northern Germany, Denmark, Scotland, England, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. From each country, three trials are chosen for close reading of courtroom discourse and the narratological approach enables various individuals to speak. Throughout the study, a choir of 24 voices of accused women are heard which reveal valuable insight into the field of mentalities and display both the individual experience of witchcraft accusation and the development of the trial. Particular attention is drawn to the accused women’s confessions, which are interpreted as enforced narratives. The analyses of individual trials are also contextualized nationally and internationally by a frame of historical elements, and a systematic comparison between the countries shows strong similarities regarding the impact of specific ideas about witchcraft, use of pressure and torture, the turning point of the trial, and the verdict and sentence. This volume is an essential resource for all students and scholars interested in the history of witchcraft, witchcraft trials, transnationality, cultural exchanges, and gender in early modern Northern Europe.

Book Confession of Faith

Download or read book Confession of Faith written by Charles Russell (H.) and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elise Wærenskjold, a Norwegian-Texan woman, wrote a set of intense religious and moral instructions for her sons under threatening clouds of secession and Civil War. In a class with great personal religious statements like Dante’s Inferno and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, the document is brought to the public for the first time in this book about her religious life. Her words are powerful, forthright, original, at times controversial. Elise Wærenskjold grew to maturity in Norway in the elite group of public servants appointed by the crown. She rebelled against restrictions imposed on women by the social customs of the time and emigrated to Texas in 1847 where she became a promotional writer for emigration and ran a prairie ranch with the help of her husband and sons. Like her contemporary Camilla Collett, author of "The District Governor’s Daughter" that inspired Henrik Ibsen’s plays portraying the tyranny of social customs governing women’s lives, she was a strong advocate for women’s rights. Her Confession of Faith covers an astonishing range of subjects. In her judgment all of them were essential to the moral education of her sons – religious topics, the rot of slavery, control of sexual desire, relations between husbands and wives, angels, proper treatment of animals, evolutionary theory, spiritualism and phrenology, gambling and suicide, sobriety – all passionately addressed and blended with an exceptionally broad humanitarian outlook. This document is a primary source for historians, students and researchers women’s in women’s studies, and anyone seeking moral guidance whether rooted in firm religious conviction or a humane ethical outlook. Kim Overall´s Review My first impression of your book was how articulate and in command of the English language you were. Your writing flowed with such comprehension and exactness, it was impressive to read just for that. As far as your notations preceding Elsie´s letter; it was not only appropriate, but enlightening upon the reader to the writer´s viewpoint. It gave me insight to your opinions and philosophy without distraction to her projected intent. My overall impression of your book is very favorable. Even though it was not a novel for entertainment reading, it was most certainly a book that enlightened my spiritual and intellectual nature enriching me even moreso. I truly enjoyed having gotten to know her, albeit selectively through time´s momentos and your devoted research, and presented as such with your compassionate interpretation. Money well invested.
