Augustine was a bishop of Hippo Regius in Africa, but his works, sermons and writings helped hold the Church together even as the Western Roman Empire was in its death throes, to the extent that every major branch of Christianity recognizes him today. The Catholic Church has venerated him as a saint and a Doctor of the Church, Orthodox Christians also consider him a saint, and Protestants and Calvinists cite him as one of the fathers and inspirations of the Protestant Reformation. In many respects, Augustine has provided the theological bedrock for Christians for nearly 1600 years, and as theologian John Leith noted in 1990, "Augustine, the North African of Berber descent, is today the spiritual father of multitudes who are remote indeed from him racially, politically, and culturally." On the Grace of Christ and on Original Sin sets forth St. Augustine's beliefs on original sin. In particular, he believed that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, and he framed the concepts of original sin. Augustine's concept of original sin was expounded in his works against the Pelagians. However, St. Thomas Aquinas took much of Augustine's theology while creating his own unique synthesis of Greek and Christian thought after the widespread rediscovery of the work of Aristotle. Augustine's doctrine of efficacious grace found eloquent expression in the works of Bernard of Clairvaux; also Reformation theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin would look back to him as their inspiration.

He thought that a deep appreciation of the mysteries revealed by God was so important that he consecrated the tireless powers of his genius to the task of bringing out their beauty and force, and of emphasizing their meaning for the daily life of man. He insisted that these mysteries are the richest treasure of our spiritual inheritance and that theology is the inspiration of the fullest lie open to use-supernatural life with Christ and in Christ. Scheeben's masterly theological synthesis is best proposed in The Mysteries of Christianity, his most original work, but was clearly formulated from the beginning of his literary activity in Nature and Grace, the book of his energetic youth.

In the course of Christian history, this meaning has frequently been obscured and even debased, though it has never been wholly lost. During the Reformation it was largely rediscovered; in the Evangelical Revival it was reaffirmed, though not without some differences of emphasis; and today, through the revival of biblical theology, it is again coming into its own. In the first chapter, the author examines the use of the term by Saint Paul, who must be regarded as the classic exponent of its Christian meaning. The next three chapters illustrate the variety of ways in which the idea of grace finds expression in New Testament Christianity. The fifth shows how essentially the same idea is embodied in the creedal formulations of the early church--and how it is distorted in some more recent dogmatic pronouncements. The sixth reviews the rise and controversial progress of a specific doctrine of grace, describing its main features as they appear in the work of the Fathers, the Schoolmen, and the Reformers. In the concluding chapter, in which traditional theological language is all but discarded, an attempt is made to consider how far the facts of our human experience justify us in speaking of the reality of grace.
