Both deal with themes that are in many aspects interesting and fascinating to us modern human-beings. They are stories about royalty, heroism, honor, love, glory, hate and revenge. Ingredients that are even today essentially for every movie which is supposed to bring in money. But during the bygone ages ''Beowulf" and ''Hamlet" take place in, making money was not the only goal. The authors wanted to deliver certain messages to the audience. In this work I will concentrate on the concepts of honor and revenge in both texts. What is considered as honorable? Which behaviour is typical for a coward? How important is revenge and how can it be achieved? And, most important, how does these concepts differ if you take a closer look on ''Beowulf'' and ''Hamlet''? What are the differences between the ages? To answer this questions it will be important to compare the main characters, as there are Beowulf and Hamlet. Both of them are confronted with situations in which decisions have to be made. Decisions on how to act, on how to react to different events and threats in their lives. By watching the characters, it should be possible to point out differences and similarities between them. I suspect that there are quite a lot of differences, because ''Hamlet'' several hundred years younger than ''Beowulf''. Therefore some concepts (e.g. that of revenge) may have changed during the time. At first I will do a critical assessment on the sources I used for this paper. These three strands, Myth, Paganism, and Christianity are all present in three distinctly different interpretations of the storyline of Beowulf, and were not written into the text with deliberate intent by the multiple composers; rather, they represent the spirituality of each of the separate societies and cultures which were their geneses. As a result of this stratification of the three separate strata, highly conflicting and different ideas are present in each interpretation of the text. Within each interpretation there are several distinct ideas which are promoted by that specific interpretation, and which are separate from the other layers of the text. This results from the three different contextual influences on each layer of the text, which are the influence of universal folklore morphology on the Mythical interpretation, the influence of Paganism from the Scandinavian Dark Ages on the Pagan interpretation, and the influence of Christianity from early Anglo-Saxon England on the Christian interpretation.

Many plays of this kind by several different playwrights, including William Shakespeare, were written and staged in the 16 th and 17 th centuries. The success of the genre was not only due to it’s bloody, criminal, and therefore exciting action but also to the topicality of revenge at that time. In revenge plays questions were raised which concerned the Elizabethans and which made them reflect on their own situations and attitudes. It was around 1570, that English playwrights took over the concept of the revenge tragedy from foreign authors such as Seneca. 1 However, the genre was so successful and widely spread among the English, that a new Elizabethan revenge tragedy was developed. The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, which can be regarded as the prototype of the English revenge drama, constituted a pattern containing the basic elements of a revenge play, which a lot of contemporary authors, such as Shakespeare, are said to have followed. 2 In the following, the success of the Elizabethan revenge play will be examined with respect to the attitude towards vengeance at that time. Furthermore, the relevance of the revenge tragedies for the Elizabethan audience will be taken into consideration. Afterwards, the pattern introduced with Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, the Kydian formula 3 , will be depicted before it’s basic constituents will be related to Hamlet, the most famous Shakespearean tragedy, in which revenge is an important motive. Several commentators have identified litotes, ironic understatement and negation as characteristic features of Old English poetry. Patterson (2000, 135) states that litotes is the 'characteristic mode of "Beowulf"'. Mitchell and Robinson (2012, 281) in a footnote to "The Wanderer", refer to 'the Anglo-Saxons' predilection for understatement', while Bracher (1937), in an early study of understatement in Old English Poetry, describes its use as 'frequent' and 'striking'. In the same study Bracher suggests that Albert Tolman may have been the first to identify this feature in Old English poetry, when he asserted that 'the rhetorical device known as "denying the opposite" is more frequent in A.-S. than in later English poetry' (Tolman, 1887). Bracher (1937) finds that understatement occurs in Beowulf with a ratio of one occurrence per 34 lines and that this ratio is exceeded in several other poems, up to a ratio of one occurrence per 17 lines in "The Riming Poem". Bracher (1937) cites this high occurrence of understatement, along with its rarity in prose, as evidence that it was a characteristic linguistic feature of Old English poetry. Bracher also points out that in the rare occurrences where it is possible to compare prose and poetic versions of the same material, understatement is restricted to the poetry.

The problem seems to lie in the difference between modern conceptions of what distinguishes a ‘monster’ from a ‘human’ and the Anglo-Saxon understanding of these terms. A possible explanation for this could be that there has been relatively little exploration of this female figure as an entity independent of her son, and what interest there has been has tended to classify her as a mere-monster, or quite literally, a mere monster. Even in Edward Irving’s rereading of "Beowulf", although he prudently observes that “the feminist movement has given us the power to open our eyes” to the phenomenon of the lack of critical attention given to Grendel’s mother, he still cannot bring himself to view Grendel’s mother as anything other than a monster. In this essay I will attempt to turn the reader’s attention to this female character not as a monster, but as a warrior-woman, one who consciously violates the customs and rituals observed by peace-making women in Germanic society.
