This is only one of the remarkable concepts explored by Gary S. Becker in his landmark work on the family. Becker applies economic theory to the most sensitive and fateful personal decisions, such as choosing a spouse or having children. He uses the basic economic assumptions of maximizing behavior, stable preferences, arid equilibria in explicit or implicit markets to analyze the allocation of time to child care as well as to careers, to marriage and divorce in polygynous as well as monogamous societies, to the increase and decrease of wealth from one generation to another. The consideration of the family from this perspective has profound theoretical and practical implications. For example, Becker’s analysis of assortative mating can be used to study matching processes generally. Becker extends the powerful tools of economic analysis to problems once considered the province of the sociologist, the anthropologist, and the historian. The obligation of these scholars to take account of his work thus constitutes an important step in the unification of the social sciences. A Treatise on the Family will have an impact on public policy as well. Becker shows that social welfare programs have significant effects on the allocation of resources within families. For example, social security taxes tend to reduce the amount of resources children give to their aged parents. The implications of these findings are obvious and far-reaching. With the publication of this extraordinary book, the family moves to the forefront of the research agenda in the social sciences.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation I assess race/ethnic differences in the formation of multifamily households and their economic benefits and financial organization. This research advances our understanding of how the internal structure of these households differs across race and ethnic groups and highlights why those differences have significant social consequences. In recognition of race/ethnic differences in family history and family values, I also investigated whether and how these structures varied across race and ethnic groups. Leveraging longitudinal data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), I analyzed race/ethnic differences in the creation of multi-family households during a significant economic downturn. I found significant race/ethnic differences during the recession in what prompts the formation of multifamily households. Further analysis of multifamily households assessed the consequences of reorganizing families within households for poverty rates. While most households had net reductions in poverty, the extent of this reduction varied by race/ethnicity and household structure. Finally, to better understand household processes, I examined the household organization of economic contributions and income receipt within households. Results suggest that having economic resources did not translate into contributing those resources to essential household expenditures, with some race/ethnic differences in these patterns. Demonstrating how household survival strategies are shaped by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and economic crisis provides policy makers with a better picture of how persistent poverty versus economic crisis are reflected in this emerging demographic pattern.

Moreover, the more advanced models combine traditional exchange (markets for commodities) and matching (markets for people or partners) and develop implications for welfare, social structures, and economic policy. In the field of family economics, Hans Haller and Hans Gersbach have pioneered a ‘market’ approach that applies the tools of general equilibrium theory to the analysis of household behavior. This very interesting book presents an overview of their methods and results. This is an inspiring work.
