Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little work has been done on the aesthetics of wonder; the writers on Sanskrit poetics have had little to say about this most attractive sensation. This work examines, in great depth, the excitants of the sense of wonder and the various purposes for which poets harness it and presents the concepts, for the first time in the history of Sanskrit aesthetics, embellished with ddlectable examples drawn from the whole of Sanskrit literature. The crowning achievement of the author is the startlingly new discovery about the nature and the role played by wonder which will revolutionize the existing concept of the sensation. The most attractive and unusual feature of the book is the high readability achieved through a scintillating style of presentation distinguished by sparkling wit and humour. An epoch-making book which scholars and lay lovers of literature alike would love to read.

Book An Epitome of Indian Aesthetics and Fine Arts Sanskrit Poetics

Download or read book An Epitome of Indian Aesthetics and Fine Arts Sanskrit Poetics written by Dr. Thiagarajan Rajagopal and published by Rudra Publications. This book was released on with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a primer to Understand the History and Development of Alankara Sastra. It will be an easy reading for Sanskrit and useful for students of other literature too! In Sanskrit there are several synonyms of ‘beauty’,—‘Saundarya’, ‘Caruta’, ‘Ramaniyata’,‘Saubhagya’, ‘Sobha’, ‘Lavanya’, ‘Kanti’, ‘Vicchitti’, and so forth. But the most frequently adopted key-term of aesthetics is Alankara. That is why Alankara-sastra should be translated as the science of beauty. Its widest meaning is adequately stressed by Vamana who aphoristically states — “Saundaryam alankarah.” Since ‘alankara’ can also mean a ‘means of beauty’, it can denote poetic and artistic devices also. In the Rgveda itself we have the use of the word aramkrti which is cognate with the later word alankara and which gives rise to the Indian name of aesthetics, namely, Alankarasastra. The Vedic term has a double connotation — one aesthetic and the other magical.

Book Ancient Wisdom Beliefs in Sanskrit Literature

Download or read book Ancient Wisdom Beliefs in Sanskrit Literature written by Nalini Chandrakant Ambekar and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient wisdom beliefs in Sanskrit literature encompass a rich tapestry of philosophical, spiritual, and moral concepts that have been passed down through generations in India. Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-Aryan language, served as a medium for expressing and codifying these beliefs, which are deeply rooted in the Vedic tradition and Hindu philosophy. Here, we explore some prominent themes found in Sanskrit literature: Vedas and Upanishads: The Vedas are a collection of sacred texts that form the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature. They contain hymns, rituals, and philosophical speculations. The Upanishads, a part of the Vedic corpus, delve deeper into metaphysical and spiritual questions, exploring the nature of the self (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman). They emphasize the concept of interconnectedness and the pursuit of self-realization. Karma and Dharma: Karma refers to the law of cause and effect, asserting that every action has consequences. It is believed that one's actions in this life will determine their fate in future lives. Dharma, on the other hand, represents the moral and ethical duties and responsibilities that individuals must fulfill in accordance with their social roles and station in life. Yoga and Meditation: Sanskrit literature is replete with teachings on yoga and meditation as pathways to spiritual growth and self-realization. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an influential text, outlines the eight limbs of yoga, including ethical principles, physical postures, breath control, and meditation techniques. Bhakti and Devotion: Bhakti, meaning devotion or love, forms a significant aspect of Sanskrit literature. It emphasizes a personal and emotional connection with the divine, wherein devotees express their love and surrender to the chosen deity. Bhakti poetry, composed by saints and mystics, often explores the themes of divine love and the longing for union with the divine. Advaita Vedanta: Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic school of philosophy, is widely represented in Sanskrit literature. It posits that the ultimate reality is non-dual, wherein the individual self (Atman) and the universal consciousness (Brahman) are one. The works of philosopher-saints like Adi Shankaracharya elucidate the principles of Advaita Vedanta. Mythology and Epics: Sanskrit literature includes captivating mythological narratives and epics, such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. These stories not only entertain but also impart moral lessons, philosophical insights, and allegorical interpretations of life's complexities. Jnana and Vidya: Jnana refers to knowledge, particularly the knowledge of the self and the ultimate reality. Vidya, on the other hand, encompasses various branches of knowledge, including arts, sciences, and spiritual wisdom. Sanskrit literature often explores the pursuit of knowledge and its transformative power. Ancient wisdom beliefs in Sanskrit literature are vast and diverse, reflecting the multifaceted nature of Indian philosophy and spirituality. They continue to inspire seekers and scholars alike, offering timeless guidance for leading a purposeful and meaningful life.

Book excerpt: This book is an English translation of the Sanskrit classic Play Abhijnan Shakuntalam by the great poet and Playwright Mahakavi Kalidas, written around 220 CE. The play is about the strange fate of Shakuntala, a simple, beautiful ascetic lady. King Dushyant meets her and falls in love with her. They get married. After some time, king Dushyant returns to his capital, assuring her that he would soon send for her. However, due to the curse by a wrathful sage, Durvasa, the king completely forgets about her. Humiliated, Shakuntala goes off into the forest to live by herself. In due course, she gives birth to a boy, whom she names Bharat. Fortuitously, following certain turns of events, Durvasas curse is removed, and the king remembers all about Shakuntala. He tries to find her, but of no avail. One day, he accidentally meets the young boy, Bharat, in the forest. The family is thus united and happily returns to the capital. Bharat grows up to become a great emperor. The original name of India is Bhaarat after his name. Rama, worshipped by Hindus all over the world as an Incarnation of God, was a descendent (some 6000-7000 years ago) of emperor Bharat.
