Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Composition of the Atmosphere With Special Reference to Its Oxygen Content Before you receive this letter I Shall have sent you my eudiometer, together with a short memoir, explaining the use of the machine, in order to ascertain with exactness the wholesomeness Of the air in any particular place. It is the same instrument that I made use of in my tour through Italy, in the course of which I have had the satisfaction of convincing myself that the air of all those places which, from the long experience Of the inhabitants, has been reputed unwholesome., is found to be so, to a very great degree Of exactness, by this instrument of mine, so that the theory seems to correspond very well to observation. In the mountains near Pisa I made trial Of the air at different heights, beginning on the plain, and proceeding to the highest summits; and found a remarkable difference in the state Of the air, every stratum being purer in proportion as I ascended. Book History of the Earth s Atmosphere

Download or read book History of the Earth s Atmosphere written by Michael I. Budyko and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book have studied the changes in the chemi cal composition of the atmosphere during geological history with regard to its close relationship to the evolution of the Earth's sedimentary shell. Beginning in 1977, the initial results of this study have been published as articles and parts of several monographs. Since new material clarifying atmospheric evolution have been obtained recently, the necessity has arisen to write a book treating the major results of investigations of the history of the atmosphere. In this book much consideration is given to the interrelation between the evolution of animate nature and changes in atmospheric composition. It proved be necessary to study the history of the two components of atmospheric air: carbon dioxide and oxygen. Attempts have been made to repre sent quantitatively the conclusions drawn here, i. e. to determine by calculation the changes in the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen over much of the history of the atmosphere. These calculations, performed in most detail for the Phanerozoic and to a lesser degree for the Late Precambrian, are supplemented with estimates of changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere in the Early Precambrian. Comparisons have been drawn between the changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the development of animate nature, a close relationship being found to exist between the stages of the evolution of organisms and variations in the chemical composition of the atmosphere.

Book Chemistry of the Climate System

Download or read book Chemistry of the Climate System written by Detlev Möller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is a major challenge facing the modern world. The chemistry of air and it's influence on the climate system forms the main focus of this monograph. The book presents a problem-based approach to presenting global atmospheric processes, evaluating the effects of changing air composition as well as possibilities for interference within these processes and indicates ways for solving the problem of climate change through chemistry. The new edition includes innovations and latest research results.

Book Atmospheric Thermodynamics 2e

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig Bohren
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-05
  • ISBN : 0198872704
  • Pages : 609 pages

Download or read book Atmospheric Thermodynamics 2e written by Craig Bohren and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric Thermodynamics provides a comprehensive treatment of a subject that can often be intimidating. The text analyses real-life problems and applications of the subject, alongside of guiding the reader through the fundamental basics and covering the first and second laws and the ideal gas law, followed by an emphasis on moist processes in Earth's atmosphere. Water in all its phases is a critical component of weather and the Earth's climate system. With user-friendly chapters that include energy conservation and water and its transformations, the authors write with a willingness to expose assumptions and approximations usually absent in other textbooks. History is woven into the text to provide a context for the time evolution of thermodynamics and its place in atmospheric science and demonstrating how physical reasoning leads to correct explanations of everyday phenomena. Many of the experiments described were done using inexpensive instruments to take advantage of the earth's atmosphere as a freely accessible thermodynamics library. This second edition provides updated treatments of atmospheric measurements and substantially expanded sections that include atmospheric applications of the first and second laws and energy exchange between humans and their atmospheric environment. With 400+ thought provoking problems and 350 references with annotated notes and further reading suggestions, this second edition provides a basic understanding of the fundamentals of this subject while still being a comprehensive reference guide for those working in the field of atmospheric and environmental sciences.
