Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Composition of Matter and the Evolution of Mind: Immortality a Scientific Certainty This little book is not a philosophical speculation, nor is it a theory. It is a brief statement of fundamental facts corroborated by every development of Science. It presents the structural unity of the Design and the relations and inter-relations of the Infinite diversity of its manifestations in their common relationship to and dependence upon the Central Power, the Source; especially its aim is to make plain the cause of evolutionary transformations that culminated in the mind of man, which was, and is, capable of aspiration for renewal, "dominion," and, individually of progress and immortality. Sir James Crichton Browne, the English specialist, has said of physicians: "Whatever theoretical tenets they may embrace, whatever physiological system they may adopt, they will, when they find themselves medical practitioners at the bedside, become ardent vitalists." Vitalists are those who see in life more than can be accounted for on any known physical basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...volitional Spirit of the central power. Man is sent to the "lilies" to-learn, since their perfect concurrence in gravitational law is superior to lawless reason. The embryo is awakened by the sun's attracting power, but there is in the bosom of the little seed that which is superior to sun, moon, and stars; superior we say, but not independent of, since life rejoices in and feeds upon all that ministers to its abundance, and is itself life in a lower stage of progression. If one thing could be more wonderful than another it would be the infinite variety of equilibria and swiftness of motion--" the speed of ether particles," Le Bon tells us, "is 300,000 times greater than that of a cannon ball"--of the ether particles charged with power that compose the constituent atoms of the embodiment in which every positive entity clothes itself. We know that this variety of equilibria or impact and compact of the positive and negative elements, initiative from the spirit of the central power and response, makes the infinite variety of substances, physical, mental, and psychical. WE KNOW, TOO, THAT ETHER IS THE MEDIUM OF CAUSAL LAW; IN ITS INFINITELY FINE PULSATIONS IT CARRIES SENSIBLE CONTROL AS AIR CONVEYS THE AUDIBLE COMMAND OF A MASTER. In man there are three distinct varieties of equilibria, and of consequent impact and compact of the electronic systems, and so closely are they related and correlated that the body reveals the mind, and the activities of both body and mind reveal the spirit of the man. The individual which these, soul, body, and mind constitute, is an aggregation of gravitational energy; that energy manifests itself in three ways. The positive element spirit organizes or creates, and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving the Mind has two main themes: how ideas about the mind evolved in science; and how the mind itself evolved in nature. The mind came into physical science when it was realised, first, that it is the activity of a physical object, a brain, which makes a mind; and secondly, that our theories of nature are largely mental constructions, artificial extensions of an inner model of the world which we inherited from our distant ancestors. From both of these perspectives, consciousness is the great enigma. If consciousness evolved, however, it is in some sense a material thing whatever else may be said of it. Physics, chemistry, molecular biology, brain function and evolutionary biology - almost the whole of science - is involved, and there can be no expert in all these fields. So the style of the book is simple, almost conversational. The excitement is that we seem to be close to a scientific theory of consciousness.

Book Structure of Matter Structure of Mind

Download or read book Structure of Matter Structure of Mind written by William L. Abler and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Structure of Matter, Structure of Mind provides a complete, clear, unified theory of the foundations of mathematics, language, and the human mind. Mind in the human sense is no longer distinguished by a few chance details of zoological classification, but, like physics, is based directly in first principles. Because sentences share all functional mechanisms with equations - a main verb, linguistic deep-structure, recursion, discretencess, linear delivery, truth and falsity - language shares a common source with arithmetic and algebra. Because truth or falsity of equations depends on their symmetry about the "equals", equations are self-regulating, not arbitrary, and reflect the founding properties of matter. Sentences of ordinary language are formed from equations by the turning of a single key - that of symmetry - unlocking the human mind into the fascinating non-Euclidean world of 21[superscript st] century physics and beyond."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind

Download or read book Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind written by William Jaworski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind is the first book to show how hylomorphism can be used to solve mind-body problems--persistent problems understanding how thought, feeling, perception, and other mental phenomena fit into the physical world described by our best science. Hylomorphism claims that structure is a basic ontological and explanatory principle. Some individuals, paradigmatically living things, consist of materials that are structured or organized in various ways. Those structures are responsible for individuals being the kinds of things they are, and having the kinds of powers or capacities they have. From a hylomorphic perspective, mind-body problems are byproducts of a worldview that rejects structure. Hylomorphic structure carves out distinctive individuals from the otherwise undifferentiated sea of matter and energy described by our best physics, and it confers on those individuals distinctive powers, including the powers to think, feel, and perceive. A worldview that rejects hylomorphic structure lacks a basic principle which distinguishes the parts of the physical universe that can think, feel, and perceive from those that can't, and without such a principle, the existence of those powers in the physical world can start to look inexplicable and mysterious. But if mental phenomena are structural phenomena, as hylomorphism claims, then they are uncontroversially part of the physical world, for on the hylomorphic view, structure is uncontroversially part of the physical world. Hylomorphism thus provides an elegant way of solving mind-body problems.
