THE QUARTETTE The weather favours us, --a little too much, perhaps," he added, as he was struck in the face by the spray of a breaking wave. The passage under the bridges was particularly terrifying. The water rolled under the arches in sombre cataracts with a terrifying noise and fearful spraying; the wind, which was blowing in the opposite direction, opposed, though it could not stop, the wild rush of the waves, which whirled in eddies and were maddened by this resistance in the narrow passage between the piles, which caused their mass to bound back. The wind howled, the water hissed and roared, and the damp echoes of the arches repeated these noises and made them more frightful still. The boat, steered with miraculous tact and almost inconceivable perspicacity in the deep night, shot safely through the centre of the safest arch and then issued on the other side, dainty, coquettish, and proud, as it had certainly the right to be. As it was passing Blackfriars Bridge, a white shape, falling from above, shot rapidly past the axis of the arch and fell in the water like swan's-down a short distance from the boat. The swan's-down struggled, and the two arms of a woman showed above the skirt ballooned by the fall. When the yawl, carried along, passed near the pale phantom floating on the black waters like an elf or a nixie of the German legends, two desperate hands grasped the gunwale with such nervous vigour, though they were weak and delicate, that the nails sank into the wood like iron claws. If any one in the boat had thought of looking up, and especially if the night had been less dark, he might have caught a glimpse of a human form bending over the parapet of the bridge. The boat heeled over suddenly, shipped a sea, and would have...

Book Reframing Decadence

  • Author : Peter Jeffreys
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2016-02-19

Download or read book Reframing Decadence written by Peter Jeffreys and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his sojourn in England during the 1870s, a young Cavafy found himself enthralled by the aesthetic movement of cosmopolitan London. It was during these years that he encountered the canvases and personalities of Pre-Raphaelite painters, including Burne-Jones and Whistler, as well as works of aesthetic writers who were effecting a revolution in British literary culture and channeling influences from France that would gradually coalesce into an international decadent movement. In Reframing Decadence, Peter Jeffreys returns us to this critical period of Cavafy’s life, showing the poet’s creative indebtedness to British and French avant-garde aesthetes whose collective impact on his poetry proved to be profound. In the process, Jeffreys offers a critical reappraisal of Cavafy’s relation to Victorian aestheticism and French literary decadence. Foremost among the tropes of decadence that captivated Cavafy were the decline of imperial Rome, the rise of Christianity, and the lingering twilight of Byzantium. The influence of Walter Pater on Cavafy’s view of classical and late-antique history was immense, inflected as it was with an unapologetic homoerotic aesthetic that Cavafy would adopt as his own, making Pater’s imaginary portraits an important touchstone for his own historicizing poetry. Cavafy would move beyond Pater to explore a more openly homoerotic sensuality but he never quite abandoned this rich Victorian legacy, one that contributed greatly to his emergence as a global poet. Jeffreys concludes by considering Cavafy’s current popularity as a gay poet and his curious relation to kitsch as manifest in his ongoing popularity via translation and visual media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic provocateur, flamboyant bohemian, precocious novelist, perfect poet—not to mention an inexhaustible journalist, critic, and man-about-town—Théophile Gautier is one of the major figures, and great characters, of French literature. In My Fantoms Richard Holmes, the celebrated biographer of Shelley and Coleridge, has found a brilliantly effective new way to bring this great bu too-little-known writer into English. My Fantoms assembles seven stories spanning the whole of Gautier’s career into a unified work that captures the essence of his adventurous life and subtle art. From the erotic awakening of “The Adolescent” through “The Poet,” a piercing recollection of the mad genius Gérard de Nerval, the great friend of Gautier’s youth, My Fantoms celebrates the senses and illuminates the strange disguises of the spirit, while taking readers on a tour of modernity at its most mysterious. ”What ever would the Devil find to do in Paris?” Gautier wonders. “He would meet people just as diabolical as he, and find himself taken for some naïve provincial…” Tapestries, statues, and corpses come to life; young men dream their way into ruin; and Gautier keeps his faith in the power of imagination: “No one is truly dead, until they are no longer loved.”

Book excerpt: Decadence, that flowering of a mannered literary style in France during the Second Empire, and in the last two decades of the nineteenth century in Britain, holds an endless fascination. Yet the ambiguity of the term 'decadence' and the challenges of identifying its practitioners make grasping its contours difficult. From the obsession with classical cultures, to the responses to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, this book offers one of the most comprehensive histories of literary Decadence. The essays here interrogate and expand the formal, geographical, and temporal frameworks for understanding Decadent literature, while offering a renewed focus on the role played by women writers. Featuring essays by leading scholars on sexuality, politics, science, translation, the New Woman, Russian and Spanish American Decadence, the influence of cinema on Decadence, and much more, it is essential reading for all those interested in the literature of the 1890s and Oscar Wilde.
