Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Brann, the Iconoclast, Vol. 6 There is probably nothing on earth "cuter" than a nigger baby; but, like other varieties of the genus "coon," they are not considered very valuable additions to society. In ante-bellum times nigger babies had a market value, and certain planters employed Kansas or Massachusetts overseers with a view to their multiplication; but under the new regime the advent of these young simians is regarded with unconcern. It was thought for a time - after Sherman's march to the sea - that the nigger baby would furnish a more or less happy solution of the much vexed "race problem"; that the blacks would, in a few generations, be faded out by fornication; but as the Caucasian became more fastidious in his tastes and substituted bikeing for coon-hunting, the hope of getting rid of Sambo by gradual absorption died a lingering death. We are not asked to believe that a renaissance of the old idea has been inaugurated under the auspices of the Baptist Missionary Society - due to the enterprise and industry of the Texas Superintendent. The Iconoclast devoutly hopes that such is not the case - it were mixing religion and politics and clearly unconstitutional. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Brann, the Iconoclast, Vol. 9 That these disciples remained in Jerusalem for ten years after the Ascension, perfecting their principles of worship and government. Then from Jerusalem, as from a common center, they radiated in all directions, bearing the gospel of a new dispensation. Some reached Rome - there is no historical evidence to prove that Peter was among them succeeded in introducing Christianity, and from the Eter nal City, as a second center, their followers spread over the vast domain of the Roman Empire. The same zealous souls that preached The Kingdom of God is at hand in the streets of Rome carried the joyful news to Britain - some claiming St. Paul himself went thither. The simple inhabitants of that lonely isle eagerly received the glad tidings. The incursions of the Angles and Saxons soon followed. The simple faith was swept before these heathen invaders into the mountain fastnesses of Wales and across the waters into Ireland, and there confined until Augustine, a Roman monk, sent thither by Gregory I converted the Saxons. Under and after Augustine, almost all of England was Christianized, and at the time of the Norman conquest the church was firmly established and known as the Church of England, on an equal footing with the Church of Rome and the Church of Constanti nople. A short while prior to the conquest, the Bishops of Rome, called Popes, were beginning to assert their supremacy over all other bishops, Rome being the chief city of the then civilized world. The Church of England, though certainly recognizing the Bishop of Rome as pri mate, the holder of the first see of the Christian world, denied his supremacy, either temporal or spiritual, steadily resisted the growing encroachments on her rights, and stoutly affirmed the independence of her clergy. That up to the time of the Norman' invasion her independence was unquestioned, is clear from the fact that the Pope blessed. Book Racial Innocence

Download or read book Racial Innocence written by Robin Bernstein and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 Book Award Winner from the International Research Society in Children's Literature 2012 Outstanding Book Award Winner from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education 2012 Winner of the Lois P. Rudnick Book Prize presented by the New England American Studies Association 2012 Runner-Up, John Hope Franklin Publication Prize presented by the American Studies Association 2012 Honorable Mention, Distinguished Book Award presented by the Society for the Study of American Women Writers Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series Beginning in the mid nineteenth century in America, childhood became synonymous with innocence--a reversal of the previously-dominant Calvinist belief that children were depraved, sinful creatures. As the idea of childhood innocence took hold, it became racialized: popular culture constructed white children as innocent and vulnerable while excluding black youth from these qualities. Actors, writers, and visual artists then began pairing white children with African American adults and children, thus transferring the quality of innocence to a variety of racial-political projects--a dynamic that Robin Bernstein calls "racial innocence." This phenomenon informed racial formation from the mid nineteenth century through the early twentieth. Racial Innocence takes up a rich archive including books, toys, theatrical props, and domestic knickknacks which Bernstein analyzes as "scriptive things" that invite or prompt historically-located practices while allowing for resistance and social improvisation. Integrating performance studies with literary and visual analysis, Bernstein offers singular readings of theatrical productions from blackface minstrelsy to Uncle Tom's Cabin to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; literary works by Joel Chandler Harris, Harriet Wilson, and Frances Hodgson Burnett; material culture including Topsy pincushions, Uncle Tom and Little Eva handkerchiefs, and Raggedy Ann dolls; and visual texts ranging from fine portraiture to advertisements for lard substitute. Throughout, Bernstein shows how "innocence" gradually became the exclusive province of white children--until the Civil Rights Movement succeeded not only in legally desegregating public spaces, but in culturally desegregating the concept of childhood itself.
