Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1815 State of the Union Address was given by the fourth president of the United States, James Madison. Excerpt: The War of 1812 was over, and he said, "It is another source of satisfaction that the treaty of peace with Great Britain has been succeeded by a convention on the subject of commerce concluded by the plenipotentiaries of the two countries. In this result a disposition is manifested on the part of that nation corresponding with the disposition of the United States, which it may be hoped will be improved into liberal arrangements on other subjects on which the parties have mutual interests, or which might endanger their future harmony." He concluded with, "As fruits of this experience and of the reputation acquired by the American arms on the land and on the water, the nation finds itself possessed of a growing respect abroad and of a just confidence in itself, which are among the best pledges for its peaceful career."

This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), the twentysecond and twenty-fourth President of the United States, was the only President to serve non-consecutive terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). He was defeated for reelection in 1888 by Benjamin Harrison, against whom he ran again in 1892 and won a second term. He was the only Democrat elected to the Presidency in the era of Republican political domination between 1860 and 1912, after the American Civil War. His admirers praise him for his bedrock honesty, independence, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism. As a leader of the Bourbon Democrats, he opposed imperialism, taxes, corruption, patronage, subsidies and inflationary policies. Some of Cleveland's actions were controversial with political factions.

This book was released on 2020-05-03 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hercule Poirot made his first public appearance in 1920 at the age, one guesses, of about 60. He finally breathed his metaphorical last in 1975 at the age of maybe 75 or 80. And in that short span of time - either 55 years or about 20, depending on how you count it - Poirot became one of England's most profitable and ubiquitous export commodities. But it's very clear that his creator, Agatha Christie, did not at first intend for it to go that way. She made a very definite attempt to end the Hercule Poirot saga in the mid-1920s, when his story consisted simply of three novels and 25 short stories. It is that first Hercule Poirot bibliography, the one Christie clearly intended to leave for posterity when she typed up the last few words of "The Crag in the Dolomites" sometime in 1924, that is presented in this collection.

Download or read book The Essential Faulkner written by William Faulkner and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essential pieces by an American master • “A real contribution to the study of Faulkner’s work.”—Edmund Wilson In prose of biblical grandeur and feverish intensity, William Faulkner reconstructed the history of the American South as a tragic legend of courage and cruelty, gallantry and greed, futile nobility and obscene crimes. He set this legend in a small, minutely realized parallel universe that he called Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. No single volume better conveys the scope of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha legend than The Essential Faulkner. The book includes self-contained episodes from the novels The Sound and the Fury, Light in August, and Sanctuary; the stories “The Bear,” “Spotted Horses,” “A Rose for Emily,” and “Old Man,” among others; a map of Yoknapatawpha County and a chronology of the Compson family created by Faulkner especially for this edition; and the complete text of Faulkner’s 1950 address upon receiving the Nobel Prize in literature. Malcolm Cowley’s critical introduction was praised as “splendid” by Faulkner himself. Also includes: “A Justice” “The Courthouse” (from Requiem for a Nun) “Red Leaves” “Was” (from Go Down, Moses) “Raid” (from The Unvanquished) “Wash” “An Odor of Verbena” (from The Unvanquished) “That Evening Sun” “Ad Astra” “Dilsey” (from The Sound and the Fury) “Death Drag” “Uncle Bud and the Three Madams” (from Sanctuary) “Percy Grimm” (from Light in August) “Delta Autumn” (from Go Down, Moses) “The Jail” (from Requiem for a Nun)
