Book The Complete Mountaineer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Complete Mountaineer Classic Reprint written by George D. Abraham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Mountaineer Bout two years ago the publishers thought it desirable that mountaineering should be brought into line with our other national sports. In other words, they decided to publish a work entitled, The Complete Mountaineer, uniform with their other well-known Complete Series. This accounts for the apparently presumptuous title of this book, and the author craves pardon for what his brother climbers might well describe as an impossible pitch. N 0 one is aware of the difficulty and resultant shortcomings of the undertaking more than the author; but he feels that the outcome of his personal experience, both in technical matters and on the mountains themselves, may prove of service and interest to the largely increasing public who find their greatest pleasure in the high places of the earth. In the technical sections no lengthy attempt has been made to explain or teach details that can only be learnt in actual practice on the mountains, and in charge of more or less experienced friends. When dealing with the various districts, the author has, for the most part, so arranged the information culled from his own actual expeditions, that each chapter may prove useful to those who are making a first visit to the regions dealt with. As far as possible, second-hand opinions, which in mountaineering are notoriously contradictory and conflicting, have been avoided, and the actual personal experiences of a somewhat strenuous climbing career form the bulk of the book. Book Recollections of an Old Mountaineer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of an Old Mountaineer Classic Reprint written by Walter Larden and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Old Mountaineer I fear that I have no good excuse for adding to the many books already written about Switzerland. I can hardly hope to write in such a way as to make readers feel the mountain air fresh about them; take a part in the adventurous delights of guideless climbing and solitary wandering; grow tense under the strain of an anxious quarter of an hour; experience the elation of a successful ascent; or share that special reward of the toils of the mountaineer, - that utter peace of mind and elevation above all the anxieties and worries of life which descends upon him as he wends homeward, wearied in body but clear and strong in spirit, after a day spent in the upper world, - 'trailing clouds of glory.' So to write is not in the power of many; perhaps the very men who owe most to the mountains - and surely a tired schoolmaster is one of them? - are least able to pay their debt by worthy writing; freshness and spring may be lacking. Still, I am making an attempt. Speaking for myself, I will say that, year after year, I went to the mountains jaded, worried, and quite out of heart for next term's work. And year after year the Eternal Hills healed the sore mind, made worries seem but small things after all, and gave me heart again by giving me good comrades and true. To those who love the mountains, the vacations among them are far more than times of relaxation and pleasure. What they have been to me, I try to express here. Book The Making of a Mountaineer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of a Mountaineer Classic Reprint written by George Ingle Finch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a Mountaineer Man's heritage is great. There are the mountains; he may climb them. Mountaineering is a game second only to the greatest and best of all man's games - life. The War all but dried up the steady stream of youthful and enthusiastic devotees who kept alive and fresh the pursuit of mountain-craft. But fresh blood is as essential to the healthy life of mountaineering as it is to any other game, craft or pursuit, and, fortunately, there are cheerful signs that the after-effects of the War are fast becoming Spent. Our youth is beginning to find the dancing floor, the tennis court and the playing fields of Great Britain too narrow, too lacking in scope, perhaps also a little bit too soft; and the craving grows for wider fields and a sterner, freer pastime. It is primarily for the members of the younger generation that this book has been written, in the hopes that, by affording them a glimpse of the adventurous joys to be found in the mountains, they may be encouraged to take up and try for themselves the pursuit of mountaineering. Portions of Chapters II and XVIII have appeared in the Climber's Club journal, Chapter VIII in the British Ski Year Book, and Chapters XIV and XVI in the Alpine journal. Where not otherwise stated, the illustrations are from photographs by the Author. In conclusion, I would like to thank Captain T. G. B. Forster for the loan of four photographs; Mr. A. B. Bryn for one photograph; Mr. R. H. K. Peto for the pen-and-ink sketch of the east face of Monte Rosa and the drawing of an ice-axe; my brother for Chapter VIII; and last, but not least, my wife for her contribution, Chapter XII, and for the tireless pains she has taken in assisting me with the preparation and correction of the manuscript and proofs. I also wish to place on record my appreciation of what I owe to the inspiration and example of the Alpine journal and of Mr. Geoffrey Winthrop Young, and to the inspiring influence of Miss P. Broome. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ye Mountaineer IN offering the following poem to the indulgence of the public, I deem it wise to preface the same with a concise explanatory introduction, contain ing as well a bit of history that may be of aid to the reader in grasping more fully the situations that lie within. I am well aware that in this the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the pub lic is loath to receive a story dating back to a period, that, beyond the attention of the political enthusiast or student, is almost forgotten; and ex. Peets, in its stead, a tale dealing with more mod ern achievements. Then too, it is with the deep est of possible regrets, that I note the changeful tastes of the mighty masses, gradually neglecting the songful Muse that has made each age glorious in recording its most worthy achievements; there by turning a light of imperishable beauty upon the duller page of History, and leaning with prefer ence to that class of literature that can be speedily read, then cast aside, and soon forgotten. A short time ago this same subject was the topic of conversation in a party of gentlemen, viii Introduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Men of the Mountains: The Story of the Southern Mountaineer and His Kin of the Piedmont; With an Account of Some of the Agencies of Progress Among Them America knows least of what is most American. Melting-pot of the nations, with Europe's and Asia's dross thrown in along with their good metal, she is likely to forget, in all this conglomerate, the base of the alloy, which made the nation and which must yet preserve it. In the providence of God there has been saved to America a long wedge of that pure metal a golden wedge of Ophir. Stretching from North to South, scarce two hundred miles inland, are the mountains that formed the frontier of English America when America became a nation. These mountains are filled with the stock of the Revolution, a race with the primitive virtues that won our liberties, that extended our borders, that preserved the ideal of freedom in its great hour of trial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Craft I do not myself attach much value to mountaineering handbooks an open-air pursuit can only be learned by practical attempt and from good example. I used to read them for the fun of surprising some hero Of my youth as he strained his imagination to squeeze a grave principle out of a random holiday memory, and for the sympathetic pleasure of reconstructing for myself the real day of irresponsible adventure the recollection of which was bringing a thrill of forbidden joy to his mind before he composed his face to in ict it upon me in the form Of an edifying three-line precept. I can read them now no more than I can read the climbing accident type of fiction popular with magazines, which used to provide a less sensitive digestion with some acrid food for mirth. On the other hand I would still set myself to learn Chinese, if that would enable me the better to understand one more record Of genuine mountain adventure or discover some unfamiliar atti tude Of the human mind towards the mountains and their symbolism. I do not expect other mountaineers to read, or to refrain from reading, these Opinions in a different spirit. Mountaineering, like other arts, has suffered much, for all its youth, from the limitations imposed by hasty tradition and by doctrine prematurely crystallized and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountaineering Records When I first planned publishing some record of my sister's principal mountaineering tours, I thought I should have merely to select and copy from closely kept journals. I was very much disappointed to find that she had not begun to keep a journal during the ten years when she accomplished most. The record in small pocket-books is so closely written (often with bad ink) as to be very difficult to read, -an'd also so abridged that it hardly could be of general interest. The Matterhorn, the Dent Blanche, the Eiger, the Grand Paradis, etc., all belong to this period. Monte Cristallo was accomplished in 1888, but the journal of that year has been lost or mislaid. I have, however, the account of that ascent and some others in letters to a cousin, who has allowed me to take extracts and I thought it best to begin with these extracts, and some short accounts which my sister wrote herself for a friend. After this come some short extracts from a tour in 1883, when my sister began keeping a journal, but apparently she did not keep one every year. The tour of 1890 appeared to me very interesting, and I have 00pied the greater part of it. At the end is a list of the peaks and passes she had gone up and over, which my sister made herself.
